Episode 71 – Problems in the Healer’s Guild
Speaking of which, last time I came, I briefly heard her mention that something big happened. Maybe it was about that?
I heard from her that after that problem occurred, Brandon had to visit the royal capital. But I didn’t hear much aside from that, so something must have happened since then.
“Actually, the other day, I went to the Healer’s Guild for the first time in a long time to wholesale Medical Herbs.” (Grandma)
“The other time as I was leaving, you did mention that something had happened over there.” (Lewin)
“Yes, exactly. When I went to the Healer’s Guild that time, I happened to hear some interesting gossip about the problem that the Healer’s Guild had caused. I was curious, so I looked into the matter a bit, and it seems that things have gotten quite interesting.” (Grandma)
“Um, if it’s not too much trouble, I’d like to hear about it. Is that okay?” (Lewin)
“Of course. There’s no way I’m gonna stop you from leaving and then say it’s too much trouble to tell you what’s going on after all.” (Grandma)
“That’s true. Then, I appreciate it.” (Lewin)
Now then, what kind of story was it gonna be? When it came to big problems, it was tough to imagine just what had happened. When I was a staff member of the Healer’s Guild, nothing that could be called a “big incident” ever occurred.
“Last time, you know how I told you that a big incident happened? That was caused by the failure of a new potion they formulated and released… That Guild Chief bastard, it turned out that he delivered a failed batch of those new potions to the royalty,” the grandma said with her characteristic “kukuku” chuckle.
…Even I knew of that new potion. It was completed just a bit before I was fired and had a recovery power even stronger than a Top-grade Potion. I could still vividly remember Brandon celebrating joyously when it was successfully completed, which was very rare for him to do.
If I remembered correctly, it was made from the lowest quality Coniine Herb, which was extremely poisonous. I wasn’t really certain of the fine details, but, because they couldn’t eradicate the poison from Coniine Herbs higher than low quality, I was told to sort through and pick out only the lowest quality Coniine Herbs. Because I was also forced to take part in the clinical trials for this potion, it left a very lasting impression on me.
“So they delivered a batch of potions with poison still remaining in it…? That’s a pretty serious matter…” (Lewin)
“You see why I said it was a big incident? In case you’re wondering, they did check the batch of potions for problems, but it only barely managed to pass by the poison tester. It seemed that when the Guild Chief went to the royal capital to clear his name, he assured them that it was just a mistake with that one batch and promised to send another batch of working new potions.” (Grandma)
But… back when I was still a member of the team, the production of the new potion should have already been completed. During the practical trials for the new potion, there wasn’t a single failure, so it passed through the trial period with no problems. Perhaps if I were in Brandon’s shoes, after that flawless trial period, I would also have thought that the first failure was just a fluke and said that the new potion was still deliverable.
“Judging by the way you put it… I’m guessing he wasn’t able to deliver another batch of potions?” (Lewin)
“Yup, that’s exactly right. After that, it seems that the royalty sent a messenger, unannounced, to come to Grezesta. When they arrived, they demanded the Guild Chief to use one of the new potions on one of his staff members, and sure enough, there was a side effect.” (Grandma)
“Then, what happened to Br– the Guild Chief after that?” (Lewin)
“Dunno. Since he failed in front of the royal messenger, at worst there’s the possibility of arrest. For now though, I’m pretty sure that the Guild Chief is going to be stripped of his position; it’s pretty doubtful that the Healer’s Guild in Grezesta will survive.” (Grandma)
I was struck speechless by this outrageous reality. It had only been about a month since I’d stopped working at the Healer’s Guild. Up until then, it had been smooth sailing for the Healer’s Guild the entire time. Perhaps… the timing of when I got fired ended up being really good. In the period of time that they couldn’t create the new potion anymore, I could easily imagine Brandon getting absolutely enraged. And if I were there, he would probably force me to take full responsibility for the situation. Rather than feeling like this situation served him right, I felt more relieved that I wasn’t there to experience that.
“So that’s what happened… Thank you for explaining all of that. But I’m a little worried about what will happen from here on.” (Lewin)
“Please be careful when getting your payback. Well, I’ll be off! Thank you for telling me about what happened to the Healer’s Guild.” (Lewin)
“I was the one who wanted to tell you, so you don’t need to thank me. Please come again next time you want to sell any plants or herbs or if you want to buy something. At that time, if there are any further updates with the Healer’s Guild, I’ll let you know.” (Grandma)
“Alright! I’ll definitely come again. Thank you for everything you did for me today!” (Lewin)
Waving goodbye to the grandma behind the counter with a smile, I left Elf’s Tears still pondering all the shocking news the grandma had told me, having completely forgotten the handsome sum I had received for the plants and herbs I sold.
