Episode 78 – Potion Brewing Request

TL Note: Sponsored chapter (2/3). Thank you so much for your support!

After selling my low-quality plants and herbs to the Adventurer’s Guild, I arrived at Elf’s Tears. By the way, the transaction price I got was pretty much exactly what I was expecting it to come out to, so my current wealth amounted to about 40 gold coins. Yesterday’s spices and Glutamate Herbs deals really contributed to that value.

I had a lot of money in my pocket at the moment, so I was thinking that I should save 10 gold coins, spend the rest to buy Magic Potions, and trade in my Magical Grass and request the grandma to brew the potions for me.

“If the wallet was full, the heart was too,” I mused to myself, recalling the phrase I had thought of before. With enough money, I had the convenience to spend more time on the things that I wanted to do.

Yesterday when I was leaving, I made it sound like I wouldn’t be coming back for a while, so it was a little embarrassing when I opened the door and entered Elf’s Tears. The calming jingle of the bell on the door rang out as always. But strangely enough, the grandma was actually standing behind the counter for once.

“Oya? If it isn’t Lewin? Did you forget something perhaps?” (Grandma)

“No, it’s just that yesterday, the Magic Potions were so amazing, so I thought I would come to buy more.” (Lewin)

“Ara, a repeat customer, how great!” (Grandma)

Seeing the grandma respond delightedly with a grin, I couldn’t help but smile back. What a cozy shop…

“The taste was extremely pleasant! Are the potions sold here made differently than the potions sold elsewhere?” (Lewin)

“Ah, that’s right. It took me a long time to come up with it, but it’s a potion brewed using a unique method and formula. Well, it’s not just the taste, but it’s also more effective. Seeing that you can tell the difference, you’re a fellow who knows his stuff, huh?” (Grandma)

Just as I thought, the potions sold at this store were different from other stores. I didn’t know about the increased effects of the potion since I hadn’t really tried potions from other stores, but the taste was so good that I couldn’t believe it was made from Magical Grass.

“I knew it! After drinking those potions, I immediately understood why this shop is a hidden gem!” (Lewin)

“That’s awfully nice of you to say. I’m glad that you were happy with the potions. So, is it correct to assume that you’ve come to buy some more Magic Potions today?” (Grandma)

“Yes, I was hoping you’d sell me some more Magic Potions… Actually, would it be possible for you to brew Magic Potions for me?” (Lewin)

When I asked that of her, she tilted her head. Huh? Were my words too brief there?

“Umm, I was thinking of providing you with the Magical Grass for the potions, so I was wondering if you would be able to use it to brew the Magic Potions for me. Of course, I would pay you extra for the brewing costs!” (Lewin)

“I see, so that’s what you meant. You’ll bring me Magical Grass, so you want me to make it at a discount, is that it?” (Grandma)

“Yes, that’s exactly it… Do you think that’s possible?” (Lewin)

“Hmm… I usually don’t do this, but I could do it if it’s for you, Lewin. You’ve been selling me high-quality plants and herbs in bulk after all, so how about we do it at the rate of brewing one potion for 1 silver coin?” (Grandma)

“Pardon me, then in that case, for each bottle, would I need 1 silver coin in addition to whatever I would need to provide for you?” (Lewin)

“We’d be using Magical Grass… So 1 silver coin and 10 stalks of Magical Grass would be needed per bottle. The quality of the Magic Potion will depend on the quality of the Magical Grass used, so please be mindful of that.” (Grandma)

“So… does that mean that if I were to hand in 10 stalks of high-quality Magical Grass, it would become 1 bottle of High-grade Magic Potion, and if I were to hand in 10 stalks of low-quality Magical Grass, it would become 1 bottle of Low-grade Magic Potion?” (Lewin)

“That’s correct. Except, if you only use Magical Grass, the best Magic Potions would be of Medium-grade at best and Minimum-grade at worst, so please keep that in mind as well.” (Grandma)

Hoh… this was quite interesting. Since I could appraise the quality of plants based on the level, it would be easy for me to just use plants with the right levels in order to marginally satisfy this requirement.

“If you can brew the potions for me according to this information, then I’d really appreciate it! Thank you so much, grandma!” (Lewin)

“Alright. If you’re okay with the conditions I set just now, I’m willing to brew them for you. Also, you should be aware that I won’t be able to instantly brew them; it takes some time.” (Grandma)

(TL: At first, I was pretty confused about why he did this combined level system since the author doesn’t explain it either. But after looking deeper into it, in chapter 20 he said that in general, a low quality plant was under level 10, a medium quality plant was between 10-20, and a high quality plant was 20 and higher. So what he’s doing here with the three categories is: for the category with a combined level of more than 150, the average level for the bundle of 10 would be more than 15, which might make a Medium-grade or Low-grade Magic Potion; for the one with 100-150 category, it’s probably Low-grade Magic Potions; for the under 100 category, it’s probably only Minimum-grade Magic Potions. Well, the outcome of this little experiment of his will show up in a chapter that will be released soon after this, so it should become clearer at that time.)

“Okay, I’ve confirmed this is exactly 7 bundles and 7 silver coins. I’m sure they’ll be finished by the day after tomorrow, so you can come pick them up any time after that deadline.” (Grandma)

“I understand! Grandma, thank you so much!” (Lewin)

“It’s no problem. In this short time, I’ve started favoring you, Lewin. So, is this all you have for me today?” (Grandma)

Having her brew potions for me was way cheaper than I expected, so I had her make quite a few for me this time. Going with my original plan, I was still set on buying 30 gold coins worth of Magic Potions in bulk.
