“Fuh~ fuh~ …… dad, is this okay?”

“Haha, thanks Lars. You’ve been very helpful.”

“Me too!”

One summer day, we were helping my dad work in his field in the mountains behind our house. At the age of three, I can move around, but my physical strength is not up to par and I soon slumps down.

Even so, my brother Dealide and I, wearing straw hats, did our best to harvest eggplant and tomatoes and put them in baskets.

(What magnificent vegetables ……)

All the vegetables looked good and nutritious. Then my brother picked up a tomato and smiled at me.

“Can I eat it, Dad?”

“Oh, yes! Wash it well.”

“Oh, me too!”

“Don’t tell your mother, okay?”

We both nodded at him and covered ourselves in tomatoes. In my previous life, we were close when we were about this age, and I felt a little sad.

“Hmm? What’s up, Lars?”

“Hiii …….”

“Wha, what’s wrong?”

I unconsciously avoided Dad’s hand for a moment as he tried to pat me on the head. Maybe it was because I remembered my little brother, or maybe it was because I had flashbacks of how he used to beat me.

Dad looked troubled, so I hurriedly smiled and took a bite of the tomato.

“It’s nothing! Tomatoes are delicious!”

“Really? Well, it’s the vegetables I grew!”

Then —

“Lars.”

“What?”

For some reason, my brother hugged me tightly. I don’t know what’s going on, but the moment he patted me on the back, my tears started to flow.

“Uh, uhh …… Uaaaaaaaaaaaaan!”

“What?! What’s wrong, Lars? Did Delaide do something to you?”

“No, but Lars looked like he was in pain.”

I guess children are more intelligent in the subtleties of emotion. I was three years old, and crying so hard took a lot of energy, so before I knew it, I was exhausted from crying and fell asleep, and by the time I realized it, it was dinner time.

After eating, laughing, and soaking in the bath while teasing Nina and my brother, I sat alone in my room, looking at the big moon and muttering to myself.

“I wonder if I can live the life I want with this family this time.”

No, I’m sure I can. I was convinced that I could, and I couldn’t help but smile. I don’t care if it’s a trick of God or the work of the devil, but I want to thank you!

“Thank you, God! Thank you!”

I said, thinking that God is the one who should be thanked in such cases. Then —

“Aiyo!”

“What?”

I think I just heard a distracted voice ……?

“Is anyone there ……?”

I called out fearfully in the darkness of the night, but there was no reply. No, I was just asking, but I realized that I would be more afraid of getting an answer, so I closed the window and went under the futon. Then I thought back to today.

“By the way ……”

Dad’s vegetables are going to be sold tomorrow, right? Us siblings are always away at home, and they never take us with them.

From today’s harvest, we should have quite a bit of money, but why don’t we have more money?

But there’s nothing I can do about it now …… I hope I can get a job soon to support my family. I’ve done a few jobs in my previous life, I’m sure that will help–

“Mmm ……”

–And so I finally turned five years old. My brother is seven, and we’re still as close as ever, which makes me happy. The only thing that has changed since then is that my brother’s mischievousness has decreased and he has started reading books with me and has become more interested in studying. He’s growing up to be a handsome man with silver hair, just like father, and I have a feeling he’s going to get an intellectual job.

“Have a good day!”

“You’ll have to teach me later!”

“Ugh, I hope you don’t have a simple skill like [sewing] like me ……!”

“I like Nina’s appliques, so I think that’s a good idea. I hope it’s a skill that can make money.”

“This kid has been talking about money a lot lately, right.”

My Mom put her hands on her hips and complained with her mouth agape. Well, it’s no wonder I’ve been saying that I’m going to earn money with my skills since I turned five. Of course, this includes my own ambition to have the money to go to the academy.

I wanted Mom to have an easy time of it because Mom was smiling and holding me in her arms, telling me not to worry about the kids. That way she wouldn’t have to stay up late at night making the wound medicine.

“I’d better get going then.”

“I’m off!”

My Dad took me to the town. I’d seen the town from the hill, but I’d never actually been there until I was five years old. I once begged him to let me follow him to sell vegetables, but he flatly refused, saying it was his job.

My brother had never been to town before, except for the rituals that gave him his skills, and I was excited, but —

“Hello.”

“Oh, hello …… Now, work work…….”

“Bring me more vegetables, please.”

“Mom! Hi, Mrs. Roen ……”

I exchanged greetings with a few people along the way, but somehow the townspeople seemed distant from my father. It wasn’t that they were ignoring me or harassing me, but they were showing a certain aura of “don’t get too involved”.

“Alright, this is the cathedral! This moment is always so exciting. I was taken care of here when I was five years old too.”

“By the way, I’ve never seen Grandma and Grandpa before, but are they here?”

I suddenly felt that my Dad was also a child, but at the same time, I asked him, “Then where’s Dad’s Dad?”, but at that moment —

“……. Yeah, one of these days.”

“Dad?”

He patted my head and laughed, looking very lonely. I’m sure my mom’s parents are there, but they don’t seem to want to talk about it.

As I looked around to change the subject, I noticed a girl next to me holding a large stuffed bear.

“Hello, are you five years old too? Well, that’s right, that’s why you’re here.”

“Yeah.”

She nodded her head and fell silent, burying half of her face in the stuffed bear. She was wearing a pink ribbon and her light blue hair was straight down to her shoulders, and she was staring at me with the same light blue eyes as her hair.

(She’s so cute.)

In my previous life, I was so busy working that I didn’t have a single girlfriend, but I wondered if I would ever have one. My intuition tells me that this girl in front of me will be beautiful when she grows up.

But it’s a difficult mission for me because I’ve never talked to a girl in my life.

“Oh, um —

“Hahhaha! You’re all here. But my Ryuuze will have the best skills. I’m sorry.”

I was just about to summon up the courage to call out to her when a fat man walked into the waiting room with a sneer on his face. Next to him, a wide-eyed, tweety-headed boy intimidating the children with a fearless smile.

(Well-dressed …… Are they the ones called Noble?)

As I was thinking this, a fat old man approached us, smiling at my father.

For now, we’ve got three episodes for today!

Thank you for reading!

[Afterword Theater]

“This one is a typical comedy story.”

Well, after all, I like gags.

“I’m looking forward to reading the adventures of the Imperial Ensign.”

This time, I’ve separated the conversations from the ground text, so if you have any difficulty reading, I’d appreciate it if you could let me know!
