8. The Lingering Nightmare

Wang Zicheng froze on the spot. He had never thought that the submissive sunglasses-wearing woman would have had the guts to slap him!

“How dare you slap me?”

“So what?” Burning with anger, Qu Wan widened her eyes, a far cry from her usual meek image. “You scum! Do you think you can bully people at will with your money? I’ve had enough of you!”

Being slapped and cursed, Wang Zicheng ended up losing his temper. “Qu Wan, don’t push your luck! Did you think I wouldn’t fire you?”

“Don’t bother! I’m quitting right now. I’m done serving you asshole!”

With that, she threw all work-related items onto Wang Zicheng’s face before she clapped her hands and strode out of the ward with her head held high.

As if watching an ugly duckling suddenly turn into a raging phoenix, Wang Zicheng was taken aback by her overwhelming aura and he didn’t recover from the shock until Qu Wan’s figure had faded away. “She’s so unique! I like women with a strong character!” he murmured while stroking his face.

After night fell…

A black car was parked in an unlighted alley in the old town.

Usually, a car as luxurious as this one would arouse great attention in this run-down place, but as it had always been seen parked here overnight, the residents in the neighborhood were used to it.

The neighbors all knew that the owner of this car was a handsome young man who was slim and tall, and from his calm and introverted temperament, they could tell he was by no means ordinary.

When the last bus stopped and the doors were opened, Qu Wan got off with her bag and walked towards the community through the pitch-dark alley.

In spite of the darkness, she walked fast. She was so familiar with this alley that she knew exactly where the road was rough, flat, or obstructed.

Having lived here for so long, she could find her way home even with her eyes closed.

Under a big tree in the alley, Ling Mubai stood quietly, fixing his gaze on some building in the community. In his black suit, he blended into the darkness.

The exterior wall of that building had peeled off and the gate was rusty. Except for a few households, most of the residents of this community had moved away.

Hearing the sound of high heels coming from the end of the alley, which sounded especially clear in the silence, Ling Mubai immediately turned around. By the dim light of the alley entrance, he saw a slim figure walking over.

Without uttering a word, he only stared at that blurry figure with a hint of softness in his eyes.

Qu Wan couldn’t see in the dark and she didn’t sense anyone standing nearby. After a quick walk down the alley, she entered that building.

As far as Ling Mubai was concerned, the squeak of Qu Wan’s heels on the wooden floor was more pleasing to the ear than any music in the world.

When she got upstairs, Qu Wan unlocked the door and then turned on the light in the living room as soon as she stepped in.

Qu Jianguo hadn’t come back yet. After closing the door, Qu Wan drew the curtain, walked into the kitchen and was about to cook some food for her uncle.

Standing outside, Ling Mubai gazed at the figure behind the curtain, his eyes full of passion and anticipation.

He finally met her after three years of waiting!

However, the joy of the reunion had lasted no more than a second before he suddenly found her feeding a man in the ward!

Ling Mubai felt a tearing pain in his heart back then. He thought he must have made a mistake, but it was as what he had seen it. He had no idea if he should be happy or sad. After an emotional turmoil, he felt very depressed.

It was late at night and the light in that room had gone out, but Ling Mubai still stood there and he didn’t leave until after midnight.

Qu Wan, I found you finally!

Qu Wan fell asleep soon after she went to bed, but she didn’t sleep well.

“You just can’t stand the fact that someone else is pregnant with Mubai’s child because you’re infertile, right, you scrubber?”

With a woman’s yelling, she was slapped and felt burning pain in her face.

Then all her nerves tensed up when she saw blood all over the floor.

She had never pushed Jiang Xinyue and the latter fell by herself, so she had no idea what had happened and why that woman suddenly bled!

Next, she bumped against the corner of the table and felt a sharp pain in her lower back.

When she saw Ling Mubai walk in, she thought he would come over and comfort her. However, he didn’t even cast a glance at her, which made her feel chill to the bones.

She wanted to tell him she didn’t push Jiang Xinyue, but the words just stuck in her throat when she saw Ling Mubai rush over and hold that woman up.

The most desperate thing in the world was when you entrusted your whole life to a man, he turned to leave in haste.

This was the man whom she had defied all odds to marry! This was the man she had vowed to be with forever!

As if it were stabbed, she felt a twinge in her heart, which almost took her breath away!

Qu Wan tossed and turned in bed with her delicate facial featured distorted. After a while, she suddenly woke up with a start.

She sat up, gasping. The sweat had soaked through the sheet.

Like a curse, the nightmare had been haunting her for three years!

She had no idea when she could forget all this and get rid of this nightmare.

As her drowsiness was gone, she turned on the light, put on her slippers, walked to the water dispenser, and fetch a glass of water for herself.

At this point, her cell phone suddenly rang by the pillow. When she pressed the answer key, a child’s sweet voice rang on the other end of the line, “Mommy, why don’t you come to see me?”

“Sweetie, Mommy will go back when I’m done with my work,” Qu Wan said softly, her voice full of maternal love.

“When will you get your work done?”

When Qu Wan was about to answer, it suddenly came to her mind that she had resigned to Wang Zicheng and she was jobless now.

“Mommy, have you found daddy?”

“… Not yet,” Qu Wan answered with a sigh. Tangtang hugged her thigh tightly and refused to let her go when she was about to leave for a business trip.

Having no option, she had to lie to this kid that she was out looking for his daddy.
