14. You’re So Ungrateful

Translator: Iris Guo

I waited for him to respond. Ten minutes, twenty minutes and even an hour later, I didn’t get any message from him.

Ling Mubai might think I was playing some tricks, so he ignored me.

I stayed silent for a while and sent another message, “I’m serious. I will wait for you in the usual place at 10:30 in the morning.”

The mirror reflected my calm face. I gave myself a thumbs-up, though my heart was in anguish.

These ten years, I was like his shadow. I would follow him wherever he went. I got used to ignoring myself.

It was time to make a difference.

I found the pain to forget a man I loved for ten years was worse than cutting open my heart.

But I had no choice.

I couldn’t lower myself for my entire life.

I had already lived a miserable life for a decade. I wouldn’t live in such a way for the rest of my life.

No matter how endurable I was, I would feel sick and tired of all these terrible things. Now I was tired.

I wore delicate makeup, trying to make myself look better. It was the day to divorce Ling Mubai. I wanted to end this relationship in the kindest way.

The salve Ling Xiao left the night before worked well. My bruises and wounds were healing. I could cover them by concealer and foundation.

At about 10:30 in the morning, I was in the coffee shop on time, waiting for him in a conspicuous seat by the window.

I had thought a lot on the way here and organized my words. I hoped I could behave with grace and leave him a good impression.

However, when I saw a person entering the coffee shop, my pretended grace was lost instantly.

Mei wore the wool sweater I had bought for her, the scarf I had stayed up late to knit for her and the hairpin I had given her.

Her face was red because of the cold wind. Mei blew on her hands to warm them up and walked towards me hurriedly.

I almost thought we were back to those days when she had still been my best sister. She had been so kind-hearted, innocent and flawless.

“Huansheng, don’t be angry with Mubai. Please don’t divorce him.” Mei held my hands and said miserably.

I sneered, ‘I didn’t realize that Mei is born to be an actress. She’s so talented.’

If I had known that, I would have tried my best to send her to an acting school.

I pulled my hands back and glanced at her coldly, “Okay. I don’t want to break up with him either. Why don’t you slap yourself and swear that you won’t see him again? If you do so, I won’t divorce Ling Mubai. Do you agree?”

Mei seemed confounded for a while. She might never think that I would be so calm and indifferent.

Mei knew how I treated someone who betrayed me. She thought I might scold her. Then she could pretend to be a victim and waited for Ling Mubai.

But her plan was screwed up. She didn’t know how to respond. Her eyes were gradually filled with tears.

“Huansheng, I didn’t know you love Mubai. If I had known it, I wouldn’t have dated him. Please believe me!”

I grinned sardonically, ‘You didn’t know that? Well. My screensaver has been the picture of Ling Mubai for ten years. Are you blind?’

I maintained my composure, gently stirred the coffee with a teaspoon. I smiled at her, “You know he will beat me up for you, so what do you think I should do?”

Mei was flustered. After a while, her tears streamed down her face. She almost knelt down in front of me, “Huansheng, I know it’s my fault. As long as you don’t divorce Mubai, you can beat me or scold me. I won’t resist.”

“Really?” I put down the cup and stared at her jokingly.

“Yes!” Mei stepped forward. Her attitude of confession was impeccable, “Huansheng, you can hit me if you can calm down… Ah…”

Before she finished her words, I slapped her.

“Song Xiaomei, you’re so ungrateful…”

Mei was dumbfounded.

Before she could do anything, I slapped her once again.

Noticing her clenched hands, I found hidden malice in her grievance. I suddenly realized that she was like me. When we wanted to achieve our goals, we could do anything.

We were cruel to others, but harsher to ourselves.

But she was more patient than me. She knew how to compromise, while I didn’t.

Mei bit her lips, and tears dropped off from her eyes. She went down on her knees in front of me, holding my legs and apologizing, “Huansheng, it’s all my fault. I’m sorry. Please don’t be angry with Mubai. You can beat me…”

‘Well, she again pretends to be a saintess!’

I just wanted to scare her and vent my spleen. I never intended to beat her up. When I slapped her, my hands also ached.

No one expected that she would kneel down and beg me to hit her. I had never seen such a brazen person.

‘Well, if that’s the way you wanna play it, that’s how I’ll play it.’

I lifted her chin and patted her face, “You say sorry. Do you mean you will stay away from Ling Mubai?”

Mei looked away. She dared not answer my question directly, “Huansheng, I… I love Mubai, and he loves me…”

“You don’t want to leave him, and you stop me from leaving him. So what do you want? Or you want to have a threesome?”

“I…” Mei blushed. She didn’t know how to respond.

I stood up and put the money on the table for my coffee, “I give you a chance. Stay away from me and live a ‘happy’ life with your man. If you dare to show up in front of me, I won’t show mercy!”

Her face showed both shame and anger, but she dared not say a word. I turned around and was about to leave, but bumped into a man.

‘Fuck!’ I rubbed my nose. My eyes were filled with tears because of pain.

Before I could see the man’s face, his strong arm clutched my neck. My feet left the ground.

“You won’t show mercy? What will you do to her?”
