Where Secrets Lie
Chapter 30:.....Two Steps Back
"I hate that I care about you. All this time we've spent together made me forget that I'm just another plaything, another Kate. It's all about proving my loyalty to my master." She collapsed onto his bed, her head in her hands. "I'm stupid. I said I wasn't going to be stupid."
Michael's joyful feeling vanished in an instant at her words, and he couldn't bring himself to finish what he started to say. He felt hurt, disappointed, and confused by Kara's words, but he knew she was right. He was a monster and that's all that mortal women saw when they looked at him. Yes, they found him attractive, but they couldn't love or really trust a beast. He thought Kara could be different, but he was a fool to think that. He decided show her what exactly she thought he was.
"You have me all figured out, do you, detective? So let's stop beating around the bush and get straight to it."
He pounced on Kara, and they both rolled back into the sheets. Kara fought but got nowhere. He was much too strong. He ripped at her clothing, but Kara slapped him in the face. The shock caused him to pause long enough for her to escape underneath him. She held what was left of the cloth close to her body, trying to choke back a sob. "What do you think you're doing?"
"If you believe that you're just one of my playthings, then I intend on playing with you." He sat upon the end of the bed. "I didn't choose to be a vampire, but I will play the part if you insist."
He jumped off the bed and attempted to throw her down on the floor. She reached back and slapped him a second time, his face still red and stinging from the first assault. He looked in her eyes. Just as he was about to verbally brutalize her, he saw the tears beading in the corners of her eyes. Regardless of the pain she caused him, he couldn't hurt her like this.
"You should leave, now." He threw her at the door.
Kara ran out of the room, clutching her shirt in her hand. In her haste, she bumped into Kate, who was walking down the hallway.
"Is everything okay, Michael?" Kate asked as she entered Michael's room.
Michael stared out the window with a forlorn expression etched onto his face as he gazed at the bright full moon. He didn't answer her or even turn to face her, but that didn't stop Kate. She sat down beside him on the bed and wrapped her slender brown arm around his broad shoulders. He still refused to look at her or acknowledge her presence.
"I brought you the last O-Negative before anyone else got it." It was his favorite, and she hoped it might get his attention. "You look like you need it." She tried to hand him the bag.
Michael knocked the bag out of Kate's hand. Blood squirted across the room, staining everything in its path.
"I'm sorry," Kate said, about to leave.
Before she could stand, Michael grabbed her. He threw her against the wall and tore off her shirt. He sunk his fangs into her soft neck, and she squealed with delight. After quenching his thirst, he tossed her on the bed with a violent thrust. She squirmed with pleasure as he kissed her chest and travel downward.
Kate thought she had him back, but it was Kara that filled Michael's mind.
Early the next morning, Logan shuffled down the hall toward Michael's room. While he didn't want to disturb Michael and Kara, he remembered something he needed to discuss with Michael. Hesitantly, he knocked on the door. "Michael, I have to talk to you about something."
"It's open," Michael called.
Logan waited a moment to give Kara time to hide under the blankets or even throw on some clothes before he entered. However, instead of Kara, Kate was tucked in Michael's bed. He stared at Kate as she slept, forgetting why he had come to Michael's room. He was sure Michael had replaced her with Kara.
"What did you need to talk to me about?" Michael asked.
He didn't remember, but now he felt he should discuss the situation about Kate and Kara with Michael. It wouldn't matter, however. Michael rarely listened to him. Besides, he would rather go speak with Kara.
"Well?" Michael asked.
"It can wait," Logan said. "I just remembered I have a more pressing matter to deal with." Before Michael could question him further, he walked out of the room.
When Kate finally woke later that morning, it was with a satisfied smile etched on her face. She rolled over, expecting to snuggle with Michael, but he was already sitting up in the bed.
She started to greet him but realized his eyes were closed and he wore a pained expression on his face: the same look she got when she had a migraine. Of course, vampires didn't get migraines. "You look so tense," she said and began massaging his back. "What's wrong?" She already knew what was wrong.
"Why are you so cheerful?" he asked, but it was a struggle to speak.
Her cheerful mood turned sour and frustrated, but she continued gently massaging his back. "Why aren't you? I don't understand why you are so upset about Kara when I'm the one who is always here for you. I will never try to change you. I love you for who you are. We are perfect for each other." She leaned closer to him and kissed his bare back and shoulders, hoping her words would reach him.
"Maybe you're right." He sighed. Kate often infuriated him, but she also knew him well. Maybe she was right about everything. Kara wanted him to become someone he wasn't, but Kate accepted him, even when he became angry at her, she always came back.
"Of course I'm right," Kate said with a smile. "Now, what are you going to do about it?"
