Where Secrets Lie

Chapter 39:Don't Leave

"Of course, how could I forget such an asshole?"

His hand moved so fast that Kara saw was a blur as he slapped her across the mouth. The black leather gloves he wore made it sting even worse. Blood dripped from her lips, and the pain infuriated her. Without thinking about the consequences, she punched him in the face, causing him to stumble backward. He immediately retaliated, hitting her again and knocking her off her feet while the other vampires simply watched, amused.

"You've got spunk girl." He touched his face and cringed from the pain. "No wonder Michael likes you so much." He gave her a swift kick to the side and she clutched her abdomen, holding back tears.

Then he backed away and the other two vampires took turns kicking her in the stomach while he looked around to ensure no one was watching. "Enough!" as he shoved them away. "We need to get this over with before someone notices."

Kara managed to open her eyes just in time to see him pull out a shiny switchblade from his pocket. In a flash, Kara felt the sharp pain as he pierced her stomach. "Where's your golden-haired savior now?" he whispered into her ear as she started to lose consciousness.

"Michael." She gasped for air as she called out his name just before everything went black.

The master of the sickly servant handed the knife to one of his companions. "Tell me how she tastes." His teeth shined like tiny white specks in the dark night as he grinned.

His associate's wet, pink tongue reached out to lick the blade, but he never got a taste. Before his tongue reached the knife, there was a blur, and his head fell off his shoulders. It rolled on the ground for a moment before landing onto the lead vampire's feet.

"What the−" A blood-curdling scream interrupted him.

He spun around just in time to see a man in a hooded coat rip his other companion's heart right out of his chest. Before he had time to react, the hooded man stood before him.

"Michael," he whispered.

The heart in Michael's hand still beating, not aware it had been removed. Michael squeezed it until it stopped pounding and then threw it on the ground.

"Please, forgive me," he begged and dropped to his knees. "Don't kill me."

Michael seized his throat with his bloody hand. He raised him off the ground and pulled out the switchblade he had taken from the first vampire. As the scared vampire tried to plead with him, Michael thrust the knife into his throat. He used his strength to drag it down until it reached his heart. Michael twisted it until the vampire stopped struggling. He dropped his lifeless body. Before it hit the ground, Michael tasted the blood from the blade and a vision came to him. Anger surged through his body.

He dropped the knife and ran to Kara's side. "Kara, speak to me!" He called to her over and over, inspecting her wounds. He put his ear to her chest, but could not hear her heart beating.

Henry finally arrived and rushed up to the terrible scene. He hunched over, out of breath. A stranger called out in the background. "Is she ok? Do I need to call 9-1-1?"

"Clean up this mess," Michael told Henry, "the bodies should decompose quickly, but they need to be removed before the police show up. Make sure you take care of everyone that saw this happen. We've had enough bad press lately."

"Yes sir," Henry replied. "Please just worry about Kara. You can trust me to take care of the rest."

He sunk his teeth into his own wrist until he began to bleed. He sucked up the blood and spit it into Kara's mouth. Again and again, he continued feeding her his blood, but nothing helped. Her heart still failed to beat. He took her lifeless body and held it up to his, sobbing. He ran his fingers through her hair and whispered into her ear. "Please, Kara, I need you. Don't leave me now."
