Where Secrets Lie
Chapter 54:Traitor
Kara groggily opened her eyes. Figures swayed in front of her as she tried to focus. She felt pins and needles traveling through her arms due to her hands being bound behind her back with a rope. She moved her arms back and forth in an attempt to escape from bondage. A familiar voice snapped her out of her mission
Kara's eyes finally fixed upon the old vampire. She was perfectly fine living out the rest of her days without seeing his smug face, "Yeah, good job Logan for losing the only friend you had left!" Kara glared at him as she tried to stand up, only to find her feet bound as well.
"I told you to never show your face here again or you're dead," said Elijah. "Which part of that was unclear for you?"
"What can I say, I love a great party," Kara said through gritted teeth.
Elijah backhanded her, stinging her cheek. In the corner, Logan winced at the scene. Kara couldn't understand his involvement in this. He had never been a coward, so she feared Elijah had compelled him to do his bidding. Elijah's eyes glowed, "This time I'll make sure you never return."
Hannah entered the room, followed by one of her servants. The servant seemed familiar to Kara, but the Caswell clan had so many she couldn't identify them all. Besides, this one wore a silver butterfly mask, hiding her face. Slowly, the servant reached into the bodice of her silver, billowing gown and pulled out a small dagger.
Kara felt dread as she tried to back away, but didn't get far as the doors slammed open, followed by Michael.
"Hannah, someone at the party was asking to speak with you." He looked around at the scene in sheer confusion. "What's going on here?" Then his gaze fell on Kara, and the same vision from his dreams flickered in his mind. "It's you?" he hurried over to loosen the ropes that bound her.
"But, my Lord, she is a traitor to our clan," protested Elijah, walking toward them.
Michael stared at her for a minute, then back at Elijah. He looked back down and finished letting her free. "May I ask what the crime was? I'm not keen on the idea of tying up my party guests."
"It's hard to explain. I assure you that it is in the best interest of the Caswell Clan to dispose of her as quickly as possible." Elijah placed his hand on Kara's shoulder and squeezed. She refused to show how much it hurt her.
"I see," said Michael, "well, hurry and take care of it. Hannah and I have many other guests to attend to."
Kara's heart sunk. She shot one last desperate look in Logan's direction, but he refused to look at her. She shook her head in defeat.
"Do it." Elijah nodded to the servant.
Without a word, the servant grabbed Kara by the throat and bent her over the balcony, the dagger flashing in the moonlight.
As Michael watched the scene unfold before him, time seemed to slow, and he wasn't sure this was right. It felt like his heart failed to beat, and he stumbled forward.
Hannah managed to catch him before he hit the floor. "Are you okay?"
Ignoring commotion, the servant plunged the cold steel into Kara's stomach. Without wasting a moment, she pushed her over the balcony railing. Kara reached out, trying to grab anything to stop her fall. Her fingers caught the silver mask and it dropped to the floor, revealing the servant's face. She let out a gasp before fainting and falling to the ground below.
Inside the mansion, Michael dropped to his knees, hyperventilating. The visions from his dreams flooded his mind. However, this time, when she turned her head, he saw her face, the face of the traitor. A strange voice echoed in his head, but he quickly realized it wasn't strange, it was familiar. It was her voice. He met her hours before at the party and it seemed meaningless at the time, but now, he kept saying her name again and again.
"Kara!"
