Chapter 48: Throw Caution to the Wind

After hearing that the Chief Housekeeper was going to become involved, the little servant girl Liuqin immediately silenced herself. Her fiery anger diminished as well. She timidly stepped behind Shangguan Yu.

They were in Ji Manor, not Shangguan Manor. Liuqin knew Eldest Young Master Ji would show fondness for Shangguan Yu, but he certainly would not for her. If it was discovered that the basin of water was her doing, she would be the one punished for it, even if everybody was aware that she had acted on Shangguan Yu’s order.

Chief Housekeeper Yu had worked in Ji Manor for many years and was always fair in distributing rewards and punishments. If he found out she was the one who attempted to harm the bride on the wedding day, he would skin her alive.

Shangguan Yu’s entire body was shivering. Her thoughts were muddled, but she was also aware of what would happen if her scheme was discovered. She had no choice but to accept what had happened.

Achoo! Shangguan Yu sneezed and shivered. “It’s too cold. Liuqin, escort me back!”

“Yes, Miss!” Liuqin immediately replied.

The bridesmaids were confused by Shangguan Yu’s sudden change of attitude. Two clever bridesmaids had already guessed what had happened, and quickly said, “Since everything’s alright, let’s not keep standing here. It’s an awfully cold day. Let’s escort the bride into the bridal chamber!”

“Yes, yes.” The group of people continued their march towards the bridal chamber.

With the basin of water gone, the door was quite clean.

Shangguan Yu was actually freezing. She skipped the banquet and left Ji Manor to go directly to her horse-drawn carriage.

As soon as they were inside the carriage, Liuqin immediately wrapped a blanket around Shangguan Yu and used both hands to rub some warmth into Shangguan Yu’s hands. “Miss, are you cold?”

Shangguan Yu, looking sickly pale, glared at Liuqin and said with exasperation, “If I dumped water on you, wouldn’t you be cold?”

Liuqin curled up her body for warmth. “It’s Su Yuejiu’s fault! She must’ve done this on purpose!”

Shangguan Yu let out a cold “humph,” and spoke again. “We have many days before us. I won’t forgive her for what she’s done.”

Meanwhile, in the front courtyard, the banquet had begun, and everywhere was extraordinarily busy. Su Jiu, on the other hand, had just entered the bridal chamber. The bridal chamber was decorated in an elegant and lavish fashion. The ground was covered with a red rug with golden phoenixes embroidered on. The room-dividers were encrusted with emerald-green jade, and the curtains were made of strings of pearls. The bed was built of yellow pearwood and garnished with carvings of phoenixes and silk drapes. On the bed rested a jade pillow and a silk-and-cotton blanket patterned with lovebirds, hibiscus flowers, and other similarly auspicious images. The room shone with luxury.

The bridesmaids had never seen such luxury and marveled at the fine things with admiration in their eyes.

“Young Mistress Su is so fortunate to have married into Ji Manor!”

“I’ll bet this is even more luxurious than the imperial palace!”

“Young Master Ji was generous and forgiving. Young Mistress, you must be content!”

——

Chuang Huan stood by Su Jiu’s side and watched the women with distaste. She let out a cold “humph” of her own, and turned her head.

Nanny poured some tea, and hurriedly gestured for everybody to seat themselves. “You’ve all worked hard today. Please, take a seat!”

Everybody sat down and began chattering over tea and pastries. Su Jiu, who was sitting on the bed, gritted her teeth as she listened.

She had risen from bed before the sun was even up, and hadn’t had so much as a sip of water the entire time. Her face was covered with a godforsaken cloth. It was bad enough to have to listen to these women chatter endlessly, but listening to them eat was torture.

All she wanted was to steal some money!

How did things get so complicated?

Su Jiu coughed lightly and gestured at Nanny.

Nanny bent down and asked, “Miss, is something the matter?”

“Have any of these women seen your Young Mistress in the past?” Su Jiu asked quietly.

“No.” Nanny shook her head.

Two of the bridesmaids were sent by Ji Manor, and the other two were hired by the Su family at the last minute. None were originally from the Su family.

“Then there’s no problem!” Su Jiu flung off her veil and gestured towards Chang Huan. “Come, let’s eat!”

Chang Huan immediately followed Su Jiu. The two of them peered at the food and pastries on the table and felt their mouths water. They rolled up their sleeves, and each grabbed a chicken drumstick and began eating.

Nanny started, but it was too late to stop them.

The bridesmaids who were chit-chatting over tea quieted down and watched with shock as the bride and the servant-girl devoured their food.

It was quiet in the room. The only audible sound was the sound of Su Jiu and Chang Huan gnawing on the chicken bones.

One of the bridesmaids couldn’t help but giggle as she watched with distaste. “She really is low class. How did a Young Mistress like her manage to marry into Ji Manor?”

The instant she stopped speaking, she felt a sharp pain on her face. She let out a shriek and rubbed her face as she stood up. “Who hit me?”

The other bridesmaids looked at her in surprise. One bridesmaid bent down to pick something off of the ground, and to her surprise, it was a clean chicken bone.

Su Jiu looked over at the bridesmaids. Her beautiful face was covered in delicate makeup that contrasted quite strangely with the grease glimmering on her lips and the cold look in her eyes.

“You say that like you never eat! Watch if you want, or get the hell out of here!”

The bridesmaid turned white with anger and glared at Su Jiu, speechless.

The other bridesmaids stepped towards Su Jiu and feigned smiles. “Miss Su, that’s not proper. We are here to teach you the rules, after all.”

“Not necessary! Either find somewhere else to stay, or shut your mouths!” Su Jiu propped a foot onto the stool, looking quite irritated.

Nanny kept on giving Su Jiu urgent looks. She nearly stomped her foot out of exasperation.

Miss! Can’t you just keep your mouth shut? Nanny thought to herself.

The bridesmaids paled with anger and collectively walked towards the door. They talked among themselves as they walked.

“I’ve worked for many brides, but I’ve never seen one as rude as her!”

“Ji Manor must be blind.”

“Ah!”

The bridesmaid nearest to the back suddenly felt a sharp pain on her leg, and she fell onto her knees, knocking over the bridesmaid in front of her. The two desperately grabbed at things as they fell, inadvertently knocking over the other two bridesmaids as well.

The room instantly filled with the sounds of wailing.

“Speak like that again, and I’ll punch a hole through your leg!” Chang Huan spoke coldly. “And if anybody says anything rude about Young Mistress once you leave the room, I guarantee you won’t make it out the front doors of Ji Manor alive!”

The bridesmaids paled. They dared not speak another word and timidly left the bridal chamber.

“You two!” Nanny heaved a huge sigh and sat down.

She had thought that entering Ji Manor would be the end of her work. But she now understood that it was just the beginning.

Who knew what other trouble those two would cause in the future!

Nanny wrinkled her brow and sighed again, for the fact that Ji Manor that would never again be peaceful, and for the troublesome days ahead of her.

Su Jiu ripped off a chicken wing and handed it to Nanny. “There’s no use in sighing. You needn’t worry about me. Feeding yourself is a far more important task!”

Nanny looked at the chicken wing, on the verge of tears. I’m not worried about you, she thought to herself. I’m worried about myself.

She forcefully bit into the chicken wing, and like the others, threw caution to the wind.
