Qiu Yi didn’t have a mask on. He was almost face-to-face with Bian Nan, so Bian Nan could finally see his entire appearance clearly.

The small piece of gauze on his face had been removed, revealing a semicircular wound shaped like a crescent moon under the corner of his eye.

His skin was indeed white, the contours of his face distinct, with a high nose bridge and eye sockets deeper than an average Asian’s. In addition to those pupils, Bian Nan understood why hearts had been jumping out of Zhang Xiaorong’s eyes when looking at Qiu Yi.

Fuck!

He averted his gaze in annoyance, glaring at the cup in front of him. He couldn’t hear whatever Qiu Yi was saying, the words he’d said this afternoon echoing back and forth in his mind.

I want to see Qiu Yi again. It’s not over until he’s beaten to death!

But he never expected to see Qiu Yi again in this setting.

He couldn’t possibly beat up a restaurant waiter in front of his dad. Besides, he couldn’t come up with a reasonable explanation either. It’s a sneak attack? Failed to steal the girl?

…he couldn’t afford to shame this man.

“Luohan fruit tea1,” his dad ordered his tea before lowering his head to study the menu. “The morel stewed pork ribs soup from the last time was not bad, we’ll have one morel stew”

“Morel stewed pork ribs.” Qiu Yi repeated the name, then bowed his head and pressed on the ordering device several times.

Bian Nan only recovered when he heard Qiu Yi’s voice, right before his dad had ordered the Luohan fruit tea that he hated most. But he knew his father liked this stuff. In his eyes, even Long Jing*, Bi Luo Chun*, Tie Guan Yin* could not match up to the Luohan fruit tea that cost only two dollars.
(t/n) tea names

In a bad mood, Bian Nan didn’t protest against this choice of tea. He side-eyed Qiu Yi’s wound, “Bao Zheng’s crescent moon has migrated2?”

Qiu Yi looked at him and only smiled without a word.

“What do you care so much for,” his dad was puzzled by the sudden question, “Another Matsutake pork rib soup?”

“I don’t like soup,” Bian Nan said stiffly.

“Are there ways to have matsutake without soup?’ his dad lifted his head to ask Qiu Yi.

“It can be fried,” said Qiu Yi, “It’s not bad.”

“Fried matsutake then,” his dad nodded.

“Okay, fried matsutake,” Qiu Yi pressed on the order device.

Bian Nan turned his head to look out of the window until his dad finished ordering and only turned back when Qiu Yi left. He mulled over the thought of swinging a chair towards him, guaranteed to take this brat down, and adding on two kicks…

“What happened to your hand?” his dad pointed to his hand.

Bian Nan looked down at his hand. It was scratched in the midst of chaos at the entrance of the Internet cafe that night. The wound was quite deep, but due to his shoulder injury, this small wound had been neglected, not even plastered with a band-aid.

“I fell during training,” Bian Nan said.

“Are you tired from training? I haven’t contacted your coach Jiang this semester. You haven’t stirred up trouble, have you?” His dad was a little worried.

“You think Lao Jiang is one of my friends?” Bian Nan glanced at his dad, “He needs to call you when I’ve caused whatever trouble?”

Lao Jiang did occasionally call his father. But for Sports School students, with the kind of things that happened once in a while, such as last night’s incident of climbing the wall, there was really nothing to report. There was no evidence that he had been injured in a fight, so Bian Nan paid it no mind.

His dad looked at him and sighed, seemingly unable to find a topic to talk about. Bian Nan also fell silent but didn’t feel uncomfortable. For the majority of the time they spent interacting with each other, this was often the state.

Within two minutes, Qiu Yi had served their Luohan fruit tea. Bian Nan took the pot and poured a cup for his dad.

When Qiu Yi walked away, Bian Nan turned his head and glared at his back. Only until Qiu Yi had walked far away, he raised his hand and shouted, “Waiter!”

Qiu Yi paused in his step, turned around and walked back quickly, “What’s the matter, sir?”

“Get me a glass of water,” Bian Nan said.

“In a minute.” Qiu Yi turned and left.

Bian Nan continued facing his father in silence, lightly tapping his fingers against the empty cup.

After a short while, Qiu Yi brought out a glass of water on a tray and placed it in front of Bian Nan, “Your glass of water.”

Bian Nan looked at the steaming water and stopped Qiu Yi, who was about to turn away, “Boiling water?”

“Mn, boiled water, plain water that’s boiled.” Qiu Yi looked at him.

“I want it cooled.” Bian Nan propped his temple with a finger and looked into Qiu Yi’s eyes.

“We don’t have any,” Qiu Yi said while holding the tray, “The weather is cold now, there’s only hot water.”

“Is there mineral water?” Bian Nan tsked.

“Yes, wait a minute.” Qiu Yi glanced at him and walked away.

After Qiu Yi left, his dad asked, “What’s the matter with you?”

Bian Nan had a bad temper, but he was afraid of causing inconvenience and had never deliberately caused trouble for anyone. Besides, he had never had the habit of drinking plain water during meals. His dad couldn’t understand what was wrong.

“Nothing, I just want to drink cold water.” Bian Nan pushed the hot water aside.

“Do you know the waiter?” his dad looked behind him, “Classmate?”

“There’s no white-faced major in the sports school,” Bian Nan said, “I don’t know him.”

His dad wanted to say something, mouth opening and closing, but no words came out. Eventually, he simply sighed.

Qiu Yi brought a bottle of mineral water and poured a cup for Bian Nan, “Do you need anything else, sir?”

“Hurry up, I’m starving,” Bian Nan said.

Qiu Yi made a sound of acknowledgement and walked away, but didn’t go far. It seemed that he was in charge of these seats and stood not too far away.

Unable to start a fight, Bian Nan’s only resolution in venting his anger was to lead* him like a dog.
(t/n) it only says “lead” here but the word is meant usually for walking a dog/ leading a horse

After the dishes had been served, Bian Nan needed water a moment later, then needed paper towels the next, and wanted the plates changed after that.

However, Qiu Yi always wore a smile and responded to every request. He didn’t even raise his voice.

This made Bian Nan feel quite suffocated with resentment. He waited for Qiu Yi to lose his patience so he could follow along and flare up, but Qiu Yi didn’t give him a chance the entire time!

Just before he could raise his hand to ask for a napkin for the fourth time, his dad couldn’t endure it anymore and put down his chopsticks, “Can you let me have a meal in peace?”

“You eat your food,” Bian Nan raised his hand, “Wait…”

“Hello, sir, what can I do for you?” a girl walked quickly to their table.

“…er,” Bian Nan was stunned, “Did you swap people?”

The waitress was also stunned. At a loss for words, she smiled and asked, “Do you need anything?”

“Nothing.” Bian Nan said in a muffled voice. Since they’ve changed the waiter, then forget it. He didn’t feel like leading a girl.

After the waitress walked away, Bian Nan suddenly felt a little discouraged. He wondered if his repetitive actions were too childish, especially in front of his dad, not even having his meal in comfort.

“Calmed down yet?” his dad looked at him and filled a bowl with soup, “Try this mixed mushroom soup. It’s very fresh.”

“Oh.” Bian Nan actually didn’t like soup. He could only drink two mouthfuls of beef noodle soup, but now he lowered his head and spooned a few mouthfuls of soup from the bowl.

“Is there a competition this semester?” his dad asked, trying to find a topic.

“Yes, in the city, there’s a ranking tournament in April, which has nothing to do with me.” Bian Nan picked up an unknown mushroom with his chopsticks and put it into his mouth. It wasn’t bad.

“What’s the matter? Why doesn’t it have anything to do with you?” his dad frowned.

“Didn’t you say you sent me to Sports School to…” Bian Nan shut his mouth, to pass the time, his dad used to say. But Bian Nan’s competition results had been good over the years, so his dad had probably begun to hope that he could shape up a little. Bian Nan didn’t mention this again, and glanced at his dad, “I’ll try my best and see what Lao Jiang has arranged.”

The two finished their meal in this half-silent, half-finding topic, pleasant atmosphere. When his dad was paying the bill, Bian Nan looked back. The restaurant was filled with more customers than before and the waiters were hurrying back and forth, but Qiu Yi was nowhere in sight.

Ran away?

Bian Nan tutted in his heart and stood up behind his father. The battle ended before the curtains were drawn, how boring.

After exiting the restaurant, his dad went to the parking lot to get the car. Bian Nan was too lazy to follow and stood by the roadside to wait.

Just as he took out his phone to send a message to Wan Fei telling him he would go over in a while, someone came in from the opposite side. Bian Nan smelled a mild scent of tobacco and looked up, just in time to meet the other person’s eyes.

What fate.

Bian Nan raised his eyebrows. Surprisingly, it was Qiu Yi.

In contrast to the polite service smile he wore before, Qiu Yi now watched him with a frosty, emotionless expression.

“Back from escaping?” Bian Nan suppressed the urge to hit him across the face with his phone. Qiu Yi was of similar height as him, and his physique was not as weak as he had thought, so he may not have the upper hand with this light action.

Qiu Yi glanced at him, then headed towards the restaurant. When he passed him, he whispered in his ear, “Why, missed me?”

Bian Nan’s fury was ignited by Qiu Yi’s words, “Fuck your uncle!”

He cursed, and with his left hand holding onto his phone, he swung the back of his hand towards Qiu Yi’s face without a second thought.

Qiu Yi leaned his head away and raised his hand to block it. Bian Nan’s hand hit his wrist, and it hurt briefly. It seemed Qiu Yi was wearing something on his hand.

The pain was just adding fuel to the fire. Ignoring the injury on his right shoulder, he reached out and grabbed Qiu Yi’s hand, tugging him hard to his side, and violently kneeing him in the ribs.

This knock was strong, but before he could hit a second time, Qiu Yi had gained his composure and punched him under his right rib.

The blow was no lighter than Bian Nan’s hit, and he almost fell in one breath.

Just as he was about to grit his teeth and aim his arm towards Qiu Yi’s face, the lights on a car shone behind him, horns blaring rapidly, then his dad’s roar followed, “Bian Nan!”

The car stopped beside him. His dad jumped out of the car, grabbed Bian Nan and pulled him away, “What’s all this!”

Although Bian Nan felt that all his hair was about to be burnt from fiery rage, he still exhausted his lifelong endurance in front of his father. He pointed at Qiu Yi, “You’d better not let me see you again!”

“The same.” Qiu Yi pressed against his ribs, sneering at him before turning to leave.

“What’s going on!” his dad shoved Bian Nan into the car and held the door, “I left to get the car for only two minutes and you started a fight! Why are you so careless!”

Bian Nan sat in the passenger seat without saying a word, remembering that his phone was still lying on the ground. He stretched his legs to get out of the car, but his dad shoved him back inside, “What else do you want!”

“My phone!” Bian Nan shouted, “To pick up my phone!”

“You stay put!” his dad yelled, before turning to look for the phone, “Where is it?”

“By the tree.” Bian Nan leaned back against the back of his seat, feeling his shoulders and ribs begin to ache. He knitted his eyebrows and stared in the direction of the restaurant.

No matter what his dad asked about the fight, Bian Nan didn’t make a sound. After asking several times and not receiving an answer, his dad let out a long sigh and started the car, “Going back to school?”

“Going to Wan Fei’s house.” Bian Nan rested his forehead against the window and looked out.

His dad made a sound of acknowledgement and drove down towards Wan Fei’s house in silence. When Bian Nan opened the door and got off, his dad pointed to the back seat, “I brought you a change of clean clothes.”

“Oh.” Bian Nan took out the bag containing clothes from the back seat.

“I’ll transfer the money to you tomorrow?” his dad said again.

“No rush, I still have some, I only just randomly said that,” Bian Nan took out his phone and dialled Wan Fei’s number.

After two rings, it hung up, and then Wan Fei’s head poked out of a window upstairs, “I’ll go down and open the door for you!”

The lock at the gate of Wan Fei’s block was broken, and nobody cared to fix it. Every time, people had to call for someone and wait for them to come down to open the door.

“I’ll wait for him to come down,” Bian Nan closed the door, “Dad, go back.”

“Bian Nan,” his dad rolled the window down and looked at him from the car. After thinking for a long time, he said, “This temper of yours that makes you want to start a fight whenever you hear something you don’t like is really…”

“I know,” Bian Nan patted the window and took a few steps back, “I know.”

“You know, bullshit!” his dad glared at him, rolled up the window and drove away.

As soon as he entered Wan Fei’s house, Bian Nan smelled the aroma of pancakes, and got distracted, “Pancakes?”

“Mn, don’t you eat them every now and then,” WanFei pointed to the kitchen, “My mom started baking when she heard you’re coming.”

“I’m troubling her, it’s already late at night,” Bian Nan took off his coat, ran into the kitchen and called, “Great aunt! I’ve already eaten, don’t mind it.”

“It’ll be done in a wave of the hand, it’s no trouble. His father is away on business these days, and no one eats when I make it, so it’s good to have someone to eat,” Wan Fei’s mom said with a smile, “Don’t be so polite. You’ve had my meals many times before, don’t I know your appetite?”

Bian Nan didn’t refuse anymore. He never ate any less whenever he came to Wan Fei’s place. In addition, he’d bumped into Qiu Yi today, hadn’t had a fulfilling meal, and had even fought. Suddenly his appetite grew at this moment.

All the pancakes baked by Wan Fei’s mom had been eaten by him. After washing his face absent-mindedly, he entered Wan Fei’s room and lied in bed while touching his belly and drank some milk.

“Did you enjoy the meeting with your dad?” Wan Fei entered the room and closed the door.

“Every meeting is almost a virtue,” Bian Nan smiled, then lifted his shirt to glance with a frown. Clenching his teeth, he cursed, “Fuck!”

“My God!” Wan Fei moved closer to take a look, shocked. He lifted his own shirt to inspect, “This thing is infectious? Did I pass it on to you?”

“When you’re free, can you take that IQ of yours and air it out in the sun? It’s growing mushrooms,” Bian Nan sighed, sat up and drank a mouthful of milk. “Do you know who I bumped into at dinner today?”

“Qiu Yi?” Wan Fei answered without thinking.

Bian Nan stared at him for a while, “Have you eaten to your heart’s content?”

“Fuck, you really met Qiu Yi?” Wan Fei was a little excited. He jumped into bed and sat cross-legged opposite him. “Tell me, what went on? Did you fight?”

“We didn’t fight much since my dad was there,” Bian Nan frowned, holding onto his ribs as he slowly drank two mouthfuls of milk. “My dad took me to eat mushrooms today. He works there as a waiter.”

“Working?” Wan Fei was dumbfounded. Second-year high schoolers working at restaurants were pretty uncommon. Even the few that they hung out with compared the pain of distributing flyers to getting the 3-year sentence.

“Mn.” Bian Nan lowered his head and slurped on the milk.

“Is he trying to experience life or make money…” Wan Fei snatched the milk carton from his hand, “Can’t you drink it properly? I can’t stand that noise.”

Without responding, Bian Nan lied back onto the pillow with his head resting on his arm, “Why should I care about what he does? Anyway, I’m not finished with him. When I see him in the future, I’ll fight him.”

“Fight!” Wan Fei had no opinion on Bian Nan’s decision; he was just brimming with passion for fighting, even more so than training.

He lied down beside Bian Nan, staying quiet for a while before he sighed, “You say… I think… I just feel… I just think…”

“You must be doing a lot of mental exercises,” Bian Nan said a little impatiently, “Hold it in if you haven’t thought properly yet!”

“Hey!” Wan Fei slapped his thigh, “What do you think Zhang Xiaorong likes about him? Over here we have a handsome guy chasing after her; If she wants visuals, you have visuals, if she wants a good figure, you have a good figure, if she wants money, you have money. Instead, she twists her head to run around the whole world for a little poor kid, don’t you think she’s blind…”

“Shut the hell up!” Bian Nan kicked WanFei. Even if he had no ‘Oh, it’s her ~’ sort of feelings for Zhang Xiaorong, she was still someone he wasn’t able to catch, “I like her ‘despise the rich and favour the poor’ spirit!”

“What a bullshit spirit, that’s psycho*!” Wan Fei flipped over.

Bian Nan let him talk happily and laughed for a long time, “I realize you’re quite quick sometimes.”

“Bullshit, if I don’t react quickly after hanging out with you all day long, you’d already be ruined,” Wan Fei hugged the quilt. After a moment, he suddenly turned his head, “Nan ge.”

“Mn?” Bian Nan stared at the ceiling.

“Tomorrow night,” Wan Fei touched his bruised ribs, “attack him.”
