Even before you've actually seen the threat, your mind will imagine the worse possible scenario causing unnecessary fear. The longer it takes until the confrontation, the stronger the fear becomes. Sometimes a normal situation with just a tiny bit of supernatural can even generate a lot more fear than a bloody murderer. In the case of a supernatural entity, you aren't sure what will happen but if it's a person you at least know that is killable.

A phobia can cause irrational fear. It is a fear that although you might recognize as unnecessary, you'll still feel anxious none the less.

Fearing a certain situation can even cause you to feel uncomfortable weeks in advance. You might feel like you want to throw up or it might even cause anxiety. You'll start avoiding usually safe areas and turning down invitations just to avoid confronting your fear. Some people even avoid medical treatments and checkups because they are terrified of needles.
