Chapter 1281 Tavern
Chapter 1281 Tavern
After half a day of handover work, the crew of the Liberty finally had some free time and, led by Wilknitz, rushed to a tavern in Davao City.
As for those who receive the immigrants, they are the staff of the Davao City Immigration Office and the East African military. Davao City is a typical dual-use military and civilian port. From here, you can continue eastward to Palau Island, New Guinea and other East African colonies further east in the Pacific, so Davao City is an important strategic node.
"Edtal, how is business lately?" Wilknitz, with a haggard face, walked into the tavern and asked a middle-aged man who was wiping wine glasses.
"Wilknitz, it's you, my friend. It's not easy to see you?" said the tavern owner Edtal, putting down the work in his hands.
Wilknitz said: "This time I have brought you another big business."
He then introduced Captain Hilda and others to Edtal, and Edtal greeted them one by one in a friendly manner.
"In Davao City, it's not easy to meet fellow countrymen. Apart from the government and the military, most people here are immigrants from who knows where in the world."
"Only the sailors on the mainland and Davao routes often come here to consume, so I won't charge you for the first drink. It's my treat. Of course, I can only use local wine to entertain you. After all, the local wine is still very expensive when it is shipped here."
Edtal enthusiastically poured a large glass of drink for each of the Liberty's crew members.
"This is the new bar you developed!" Wilknitz said to his old friend.
Edtal said, "Yes, this is banana wine made from local bananas. A sailor from the Northern Great Lakes Province and I learned from him how to make banana wine in their hometown. So far, it tastes pretty good."
Banana wine from the Northern Great Lakes Province is a well-known wine in East Africa. East Africans learned the method of making banana wine from the indigenous people, and later improved the formula and production methods and carried out industrialized production. It is considered a specialty product of East Africa.
Of course, there are also farmers in the Northern Great Lakes Province who use traditional methods to make banana wine, which is why Edtal was able to obtain this method of making banana wine.
Edtal said: "Among the agricultural products in Davao City, bananas and coffee are quite good, so I am also making use of local resources to prepare the wine. The taste is a little worse than the local banana wine, but the alcohol content is slightly higher, so I guarantee you will enjoy it."
In the South Seas colonies, East Africa promoted typical plantation agriculture. Of course, there was basically no other agricultural model to develop here.
As far as East Africa is concerned, not only can it develop planting and plantation agriculture, but also animal husbandry. The climate of the South Sea colonies is simpler than that of East Africa. Except for the newly acquired Kra Isthmus territory with a tropical monsoon climate, other East African colonies in South Seas are all tropical rainforest climate areas.
However, the agricultural conditions in Davao City are considered good among the East African colonies in the Southeast Asian region. Rice can be grown here, and more importantly, the yield is not low. Because there are many volcanoes on Mindanao Island, fertile volcanic ash soil like that on Java Island has been formed in some areas.
There are many volcanoes around Davao, such as Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines in the past, which is only 40 kilometers away from Davao City and its height is close to 3,000 meters.
However, there is no record of this volcano erupting. After all, the level of civilization here is too low, and East Africa has only been here for nearly twenty years.
"By the way, what did you bring on board your ship when you came to Davao City this time?" Edtal asked curiously.
Wilknitz said: "This time our ship is an old sailing ship organized by the government. It does not carry any goods, but immigrants from the Persian Gulf, mostly Russians."
"Russians? That's not surprising. Davao City has accepted a lot of Slavs in recent years, most of whom should be from Russia. After all, apart from backward countries like Russia, there shouldn't be many people willing to leave their homes to develop in the colonies." Edtar said bluntly. Compared with East Africa, Russia is indeed more backward, but East Africa has really left Russia behind in the past twenty years.
In the 1980s, the gap between East Africa and Russia was not that big. In terms of economy, industry, agriculture, etc., they were almost the same.
Of course, this is mainly because the black slaves at that time were counted as part of the East African population. In fact, the quality of life of East African citizens has long been higher than that of Russia, but it was relatively worse in the early days of colonization.
The main difference is the living environment. After all, Africa was a truly wild land at the beginning of colonization, and the conditions were not even as good as those in Siberia.
After the 1980s, East Africa officially entered a stage of rapid development like a rocket. At that time, East Africa's infrastructure began to take off. Prior to that, East Africa had invested heavily in infrastructure, building water conservancy, roads, and railways.
The construction of these infrastructures has also completely revitalized the economy of East Africa, enabling East Africa to develop mines and achieve national allocation of resources, thus promoting the development of East Africa's industry.
By the 1990s, East Africa was no less advanced than Russia in all fields. After all, it was impossible for a backward country to defeat Britain at that time.
After the 20th century, Russia was no longer a rival to East Africa. At that time, East Africa's benchmark countries had become industrial powers such as France and Britain, and they were targeting Germany and the United States, the two most industrially developed countries.
Before World War I, the industrial scale of East Africa was basically on par with that of the United States. In the years after World War I, it even surpassed the United States to become the world's largest industrial country.
However, this is based on the fact that East Africa's population is larger than that of the United States. Today, the goal of East Africa's industrial development is to continue to expand while beginning to pay attention to the development of industrial quality.
Wilknitz said: "This group of Russians mainly came from Ukraine. They all came from Russia's occupied areas. Russia's unfavorable war situation made it even impossible for it to protect the safety of its own people. Of course, arriving in Mindanao was an opportunity for them."
Edtal shook his head and said, "It is not easy to develop in Mindanao. After all, most of them cannot be arranged to places like Davao City that have been developed to a certain extent."
"They will most likely be arranged to settle on the islands in the north of Mindanao. The islands in the north of Mindanao have hardly been developed. They will have to work for a few more years before they can enjoy the happiness of their new life."
“The government put them in Davao just to let them adapt to the climate and environment of Southeast Asia in advance and get rid of acclimatization. I guess this period of time is also the most difficult time for them.”
Wilknitz said: "Didn't our country develop in the same way? East Africa was probably only slightly better than here. It was also poor. It took the efforts of several generations to create today's East Africa."
Although the history of East Africa is only more than half a century, this time is enough for many families to renew themselves. The earliest immigrants to East Africa may even have great-grandchildren.
History has changed beyond recognition so inadvertently. More than 50 years have passed, and other parts of Africa are still the same Africa, but East Africa has become a civilized country. Its population density ranks fifth in the world, second only to India, the Far East, Europe and the United States, and its industrial strength ranks third in the world, second only to Europe and America.
The reason why it is not completely compared with countries is mainly that various data of East Africa are somewhat exceeded. Just as Russia can be regarded as a continent, East Africa is not much behind. After all, the smallest Oceania has an area of only more than 8 million square kilometers. Of course, area is not the main factor. Canada, Australia and Brazil are also not small in area. The difference between Russia and East Africa and them is that the population of both countries has reached more than 100 million, which is more than the entire South America.
