Then we turned to the art of punishment and naming, and settled on "clear rewards and punishments", which is the "law" respected by Legalists:
  Therefore, if the law is not far away from righteousness, the people will obey it and never leave; if harmony is not far away from etiquette, the people will be close but not violent. Therefore, what is punished by the law is where righteousness is removed; what is rewarded by harmony is what is taken away by etiquette. The people obey the etiquette and justice, and if rewards and punishments are obeyed, the people will not violate the prohibitions.

He also proposed the "four essentials for treating the root cause", namely "benevolence, righteousness, etiquette, and skill", focusing on the "skill" advocated by the Legalists:

Promoting benefits and eliminating harm, loving and selfless, is called benevolence; knowing right from wrong, whether it is possible to establish, is called righteousness; advancing and retreating in a controlled manner, distinguishing respect and inferiority, is called propriety; the handle that is good at killing living things, clearing the blockage, is the number of the weight of the power. , on the way of gains and losses, the false feelings of far and near must be seen above, which is called the art.

All these four are the foundation of governance and the use of Dao. They are all facilities and cannot be abolished.

If the key is obtained, the world will be peaceful and happy, and the laws will be established but not used; if the method is not obtained, the master will be hidden from above and the officials will be confused below.

Coupled with the natural "power" of monarchy, using Confucian principles to demonstrate the necessity and interrelationship of "law, technique, and power" is equivalent to putting a Confucian shell around Legalism. Isn't this the king's idea? Is it "Confucianism on the outside and Dharma on the inside" that Nan admires most?

I thought Dong Zhongshu was famous and proficient in Confucianism, so I put him on the table. It turns out that being pragmatic is more applicable than being proficient.

"Gongsun Hong, is this person your disciple for many generations?" Wang Quan asked Dou Ying, the Prime Minister of the Left.
