In contemporary Buddhism, there is a saying that there are six schools and seven sects. The most mainstream and largest one is the Donglin Temple lineage of the Benwu Sect. The Benwu Sect was founded by Daoan and later inherited by Huiyuan, Sengrui and others. It is also the largest sect among the six schools and seven sects.

However, although the six schools and seven sects have differences, fundamentally, they are just different interpretations of the concept of Prajna emptiness.

Just like the various Taoist sects, no matter which one, they all ultimately come back to the "Tao Te Ching".

The same is true of Buddhism today. No matter which school or sect you belong to, what you practice and gain are based on the "Prajna Sutra" and the "Zen Sutra". Therefore, in addition to the division of the six schools and seven sects, there is the division between Mahayana Prajna and Hinayana Zen.

From this we can see that Prajna thought is the mainstream.

Although there are differences, they are just different perspectives on "emptiness", which is why there are different interpretations and so many factions.

But Daosheng took an unconventional approach!

In addition to promoting the idea that "all sentient beings can become Buddhas", which was resisted by the monks and believers at that time, he also broke the idea of ​​the monks and believers studying Prajna emptiness and instead extracted the concept of "Nirvana existence" from the Lotus Sutra.

In other words, the concept of Buddha has been transformed from an empty concept to an existing concept.

From this we can see that this person is not the type who follows the rules. Instead, he likes to go against others.

The more the mainstream said so, the more he chose not to go along with the crowd!
Of course, his opposition is not without basis.

His theories of "all sentient beings can become Buddhas" and "Buddhahood through Nirvana" have indeed become the mainstream opinion in later generations and are deeply rooted.

For example, the theory that "everyone can become a Buddha except Ajatashatru" has been abandoned by almost all schools and sects in later generations except the Yogacara school.

Therefore, the more Lu Chen prevented Daosheng from following him, the more the latter insisted on following him.
