Chapter 23 Confession
Chapter 23 Confession (1)
This article records that Huineng taught the four directions of scholars who came to the mountain to listen to the law, "the fragrance of the five parts of the self-nature", "repentance without form", "four vows from the heart", "three refuges without form" and "one body and three bodies". Self-Nature Buddha" and other methods.Self-nature five-point dharmakaya incense is divided into the incense of precepts, the incense of samadhi, the incense of wisdom, the incense of liberation, and the incense of knowledge and vision of liberation. It is advocated that those who practice their own minds should be free from the constraints of climbing and grasping, and seek liberation. Then he taught no-phase repentance, and defined the definition of "repentance". Repentance means to tell the previous sins, and repentance means to cut off the past.He talked about the four great vows of the heart, "I vow to save all living beings from my heart, I vow to eliminate my afflictions, I vow to learn the Dharma door of my own nature, and I vow to achieve the supreme Buddha way of my own nature".Give the "Three Refuge Precepts of Non-Performance", change the previous reliance on the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha to the three treasures of reliance on enlightenment, reliance on righteousness, and reliance on purity, and vigorously advocate reliance on self-nature rather than external forces. ".Finally, I will explain to the public what is the "Pure Dharmakaya Buddha", what is the "Perfect Sambhogakaya Buddha", and what is the "thousands of billions of incarnation Buddhas". Outside, born from the self-nature, not obtained from the outside, the Buddha-nature is inherent, that is, the heart is the Buddha.

At that time, the master saw the scholars from all directions in Guangshao and Ji, gathering together in the mountains to listen to the Dharma, so he ascended his seat and announced to the crowd, "Come, all virtuous teachers!"This matter must start from the self-nature ③.At all times, think about it and purify your mind, cultivate yourself, see your Dharma body, see the Buddha in your mind, and practice self-discipline.Since we came from afar, we will be here for a while, and we all have a common destiny. Now everyone can kneel on their knees ④, firstly to pass on the five-point dharma body incense ⑤, and then to give the non-phase repentance ⑥.
Everyone knelt down. The teacher said: "A precept incense is the incense of precepts, that is, in the heart, there is no wrong, no evil, no envy, no greed, hatred, and no harm. It is called the incense of precepts."The second Dingxiang, that is, to see all good and evil situations, the mind is not disturbed, and it is called Dingxiang.Sanhuixiang, with no hindrance to one's own mind, always contemplates one's own nature with wisdom, and does not create any evil.Although he cultivates all kinds of goodness, he is not attached to his heart, respects his superiors and his inferiors, and is sympathetic to the lonely and poor. He is named Huixiang. The four fragrances of liberation, that is, the mind has nothing to cling to⑦, does not think of good, does not think of evil, is at ease without hindrance, and is called the fragrance of liberation.Five Liberation Knowing and Seeing Fragrances. Since one’s mind has nothing to cling to, good or evil, one should not remain empty and silent. That is to say, one must learn a lot, know one’s original mind, reach all the Buddha’s principles, and be in harmony with light. The true nature is not easy, and it is called the fragrance of knowledge and vision of liberation.
Good friends! Each of these fragrances is smoked internally, so don't look for them externally.
Now I will teach you to repent without any sign, to eliminate the sins of the three times ⑨, and make the three karmas pure ⑩.

① Guangshao: Guangzhou and Shaozhou.
② Parallel collection: Gather, gather.
③This matter: This refers to the enlightenment and liberation of the mind-seeing nature.
④ Hu Kneeling: Also known as Hu Li.In ancient times, India and the Western Regions were collectively referred to as Hu, and Hu Kneeling refers to the general ritual of Hu people kneeling and worshiping.
⑤Five points of dharmakaya incense: the incense of precepts, the incense of samadhi, the incense of wisdom, the incense of liberation, and the incense of knowledge and vision of liberation. These five-point incense are all said from the self-nature, and all are cultivated from the merits and virtues, that is, from the self-realized self-nature Dharmakaya to become a Buddha.Incense is to burn the abstract priceless real incense with wisdom.
⑥Repentance without phase: Confession means "forbearance", that is, to ask others to endure sins.Repent, repent, repent, that is, repent of past sins.Zen Buddhism advocates not paying attention to the form and ceremony of confession, but emphasizing the clarity of the individual's mind, which is called no-phase confession.
⑦ Climbing: Climbing and worrying, the meaning of the heart turning with the external environment, refers to the effect of the mind being attached to a certain object. If an old man climbs up with a stick, it is called climbing. It is also like an ape climbing a branch of a tree, suddenly there, and suddenly here, this is called climbing.
⑧ Inner smoke: The symmetry of "outside smoke".In the hearts of all living beings, there is the True Tathagata of Original Enlightenment. This True Tathagata of Original Awareness influences ignorance, makes the delusional mind hate the pain of life and death, and pray for the happiness of Nirvana. This situation is called internal smuggling. As for all the teachings of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as the practitioner's own practice, they are all called external smoke.
⑨ Sanshi: It is the general term for past life, present life and future life. The present world and the future world are collectively called the present and future world.

At that time, Master Huineng saw that people from Guangzhou and Shaozhou, as well as people from all over the world, gathered in Caoxi Mountain to listen to the Dharma, so he opened the altar to teach the Dharma, and said to the crowd: "Come, good friends! It is such a big event to practice Buddhism and Taoism." We must start from the self-nature. At any time, we should purify our original mind, practice self-cultivation, conduct our own mind, see our own wisdom and law body, see the Buddha nature of our own mind, liberate ourselves, and keep precepts by ourselves. It’s a waste of time. Since I came all the way here, it’s a predestined relationship to gather here. Now everyone can kneel down, and I will first teach you the five-point Dharmakaya incense of self-nature, and then I will teach you repentance without form.”
Everyone knelt down.Master Huineng said: "The first is the incense of abstinence, that is, there is no right and wrong, no good and evil, no jealousy, no greed, anger, and poison in the mind of the self. This is called the incense of abstinence. When you see all the good and evil external appearances, your mind will not be distracted. This is called the fragrance of samadhi. The third is the fragrance of wisdom. There is no obstacle to the understanding of your mind. Self-mind without attachment, respecting the elders, caring for the younger, compassionate and caring for the lonely and poor, this is called the fragrance of wisdom. The fourth is the fragrance of liberation, which means that the mind does not have the heart to pursue and cling to external things, does not think about goodness, does not think about evil, To be free and unhindered, this is called the incense of liberation. The fifth is the incense of knowledge and vision of liberation. The mind has neither the heart to cling to good and evil, nor can it fall into emptiness and stick to silence. That is to say, it is necessary to study extensively and listen to many teachings. Knowing and seeing one's own mind, mastering all Buddhist truths, treating people with light and dust, without attachment to others and self, directly reaching the supreme enlightenment, and the nature of the true self has not changed. This is called the fragrance of knowledge and vision of liberation.
"Good advisor! This five-point dharmakaya incense is ignited and practiced within oneself, so don't seek it outside.
"Now I teach you repentance without form, so as to eliminate the sin karma of the past, present, and future generations, so that everyone can obtain the purification of the three karmas of body, speech, and mind.

Good friends!Everyone followed my words, and said for a while: disciples, read the past, present and future, so that every thought will not be contaminated by ignorance. All previous sins such as bad karma, ignorance, etc., have all been repented, and I wish to be wiped out for a while, and never come back again.
Disciple and so on, from the past, present and future thoughts, every thought will not be contaminated by arrogance. All previous sins of bad karma, arrogance and deceit, etc., are all repented, and I wish that they will be wiped out for a while and never come back again.
Disciples, from the past thoughts, present thoughts and future thoughts, every thought will not be stained by jealousy. All previous evil karma, jealousy and other sins are all repented.Good friends! It is a repentance for nothing.
What is the name of repentance? What is the name of regret? Those who repent, repent of their past mistakes. All previous evil karma, such as ignorance, arrogance, deceit, and jealousy, are completely repented, and they will never come back again. This is called repentance. Those who regret, regret their past. From now on, all evil karma, ignorance, arrogance, deceit, and jealousy have been awakened, and they are all cut off forever, let alone repeated. This is called remorse, so it is called repentance.Ordinary people are foolish and delusional, they only know how to repent their past mistakes, but they don't know how to regret their later mistakes.Because of no repentance, the previous sins are not destroyed, and the later ones are reborn; the former ones are not destroyed, but the latter ones are reborn, so what is repentance?
Good friends! After repenting, I make the four great vows with the virtuous teacher, and each must listen attentively: I vow to liberate all sentient beings from my heart, I vow to end my afflictions, I vow to learn endless Dharma gates of my own nature, and I vow to achieve the supreme Buddha way of my own nature.
Good friends!Don't you all say that all living beings are infinitely vowed to save, what kind of way, and it is not Huineng's salvation.
Good friends! The sentient beings in the heart, the so-called evil and deluded minds, deluded minds, unkind minds, jealous minds, malicious minds, such minds, are all sentient beings, and each has to save its own nature, which is called true salvation.
What is self-examination?That is to say, the wrong views in one's own mind afflict foolish beings, and save the correct views. With the right view, the prajna wisdom can break through the ignorance and delusion of all living beings, and each of them can save himself.Evil comes from righteousness, delusion comes from enlightenment, stupidity comes from wisdom, and evil comes from kindness. Those who are saved in this way are called true degrees!

①Four grand vows: When all bodhisattvas first arouse their hearts, they must make these four broad vows, so they are also called general vows.He also made four great vows, four great actions, four great actions, four great vows, and four great vows. The contents and explanations of the four great vows are scattered in various scriptures, but there are quite differences in what each scripture mentions.Chinese Buddhism generally adopts the theory of the "Six Patriarch Altar Sutra", namely: [-]. "What is repentance? What is repentance? The so-called repentance is to confess the sins that one has committed in the past. All previous evils: ignorance and confusion, arrogance, jealousy, etc., are all frankly admitted and forever Not to repeat the crime, this is called repentance. The so-called repentance means to reflect and repent in order to cut off the sins that will be created in the future. From now on, all the sins of evil karma, ignorance and confusion, arrogance, jealousy, etc., are now aware and open. Enlightenment, everything will be cut off forever, and will not be artificial again. This is called remorse, so it is called confession. Ordinary people are ignorant and confused. They only know how to confess and confess their past sins, but do not know how to reflect and repent to eradicate him. They will create sinful karma. Because they do not know how to repent, the previous sinful karma has not been eliminated, and the subsequent sins have arisen again; since the previous sinful karma cannot be eliminated, the latter sins have already arisen again, what is this called repentance? ?
"Good friends! Now that the repentance has been taught, I will make four great vows with you now. Everyone needs to be sincere and sincere, and listen carefully: I vow to save all living beings in my heart, I vow to end my afflictions, I vow to learn endless ways of self-nature, The Supreme Buddha and Tao vows come true.
"Good Advisor! Don't you all say 'the boundless vow to save all living beings'? It's not me, Huineng, who is here to save.
"Good Advisor! The sentient beings in your heart are what we call the obsessive mind, the delusional mind, the unkind mind, the jealousy mind, the malicious mind, etc. Such minds are all sentient beings, and everyone must use them individually. The original nature is self-sufficient, which is called true degree.
"What is self-nature self-sufficiency? It means that all living beings such as evil delusions, deluded views, afflictions and ignorance in the self-centered mind will be liberated with correct knowledge and views. With correct views, let prajna wisdom break through ignorance and delusion of all living beings, and each of them will save their own nature. Get rid of the arising of wrong views with correct views, get rid of delusions and doubts with awareness, get rid of ignorance and obstacles with wisdom, and get rid of evil thoughts with good thoughts. This kind of degree is called true degree.

And worry about boundless vows.It is also true to eliminate the self-nature prajna wisdom and get rid of false thoughts. In addition, to learn the endless vows of the Dharma, you must see your own nature and always practice the righteous Dharma. This is called true learning. And the vow of the supreme Buddha way is fulfilled, not only can you always set your mind down, walk in the truth, avoid confusion and enlightenment, always give birth to prajna, eliminate the truth and delusion, you will see the Buddha nature;Practicing with constant thoughts is the method of wish force①.
Good friends! Now that I have made the four great vows, I will teach the precepts of the Three Refugees of Non-relationship to good teachers.Good friends!Take refuge in enlightenment, two-legged respect; take refuge in righteousness, detachment from desire; From now on, call yourself a teacher, let alone convert to evil demons and heretics, and prove yourself with the Three Jewels of your own nature.Encourage good friends to take refuge in the Three Jewels of Self-Nature.The Buddha is enlightened; the Dharma is righteous; the monk is pure.Taking refuge in enlightenment with one's own heart, evil delusions will not arise, contentment with few desires, and being able to leave money and sex, known as the Two-legged Venerable.Taking refuge in righteousness with one's own mind, and having no wrong views in one's thoughts, because of having no wrong views, there is no one to pay homage to oneself ④, greedy and attached, and is called the Venerable of Liberation from Desires.Taking refuge in the purity of one's own mind, all the realms of dust, toil, love and desire, the self-nature is not defiled, and is called the Venerable Among All.
If you practice this line, you will take refuge in yourself.Ordinary people don't know how to accept the three-return precepts from day to night; if you say you take refuge in the Buddha, where is the Buddha? If you don't see the Buddha, where should you go?Words become false.
Good friends!Observe each other, don't make mistakes with your heart, the scriptures clearly say that you take refuge in the Buddha, and don't say that you take refuge in other Buddhas.Since the Buddha does not return, there is no place to rely on.
Now that you are self-enlightened, you must take refuge in the Three Jewels of your own mind⑤.Adjusting one's mind internally and respecting others externally is self-refuge.
