Chapter 22
This article records Master Huineng's explanation of what "sitting meditation" is: "Being outside all the realms of good and evil, without thinking, it is called sitting; seeing the self-nature without moving, it is called Zen."It expounds the definition of "Zen Ding" in the Southern School of Zen: "External separation is Zen, and internal chaos is Ding", "External Dhyana and internal Ding are Dhyana".It is believed that sitting in meditation is not to keep the mind and see the purity, and to sit blindly, but to not be attached to the outside world and to be distracted from the inside. Meditation and prajna wisdom are integrated inside and outside. In the end, it also emphasized the principle of seeing the nature clearly, self-cultivation, and self-cultivation.

The teacher told the crowd: "Sitting meditation in this sect does not focus on the mind, nor does it focus on the pure, nor does it mean not moving. If you talk about the mind, the mind is originally a delusion, knowing the mind is like an illusion, so there is nothing to grasp. If it is said to be pure, human nature is inherently pure; because of delusions, it covers the truth, but without delusions, the nature is pure by itself. If the mind is pure, but there is a delusion of purity, there is no place for delusion, and the author is delusion. The net has no form, but it has a pure appearance.Words are skills, and those who see this have blocked their own nature, but they are bound by purification.
Good friends! If you practice immovability, but when you see all people, you don’t see people’s right, wrong, good, evil, and faults, that is, your self-nature is immobile④.
Good friends!Even though Charming doesn't move, she talks about others' right and wrong, likes and dislikes, which is contrary to Tao.If you focus on purity of mind, you will block the way.
The teacher said to everyone: good teacher! What is zazen called? In this method, there are no obstacles and no hindrances, outside all good and evil realms, and the mind can't think, which is called sitting; seeing the self-nature without moving, is called Zen.Good friends! What is meditation?External separation is Zen ⑤, internal chaos is samadhi. If the appearance is on the outside, the inside will be chaotic. If the outside is separated from the appearance, the heart will not be chaotic. The nature is self-purifying and self-determining, just seeing the situation and thinking the situation is chaotic. If the mind is not disturbed when seeing various situations, it is true samadhi.
Good friends!External separation is Zen, internal chaos is samadhi.External meditation and internal concentration are for meditation. The Bodhisattva Precepts Sutra says: My original self-nature is pure.Good friends! In thought, you can see that your nature is pure, self-cultivation, self-cultivation, and self-cultivation of Buddhahood.

Master Huineng said to everyone: "The sitting meditation I teach in this method is not about sticking to the original mind, nor is it about blindly seeing the net, and it is not about sitting still. Illusion, I understand the emptiness of the mind, so there is nothing to cling to. If we say that we are obsessed with pursuing the purity of the nature, then the human nature is originally pure; because of the emptiness of the mind, it covers up the true nature of the self , once there is no false and wrong view, the nature will be self-purified again. A persistent pursuit of the so-called purity arises, but a delusion of attachment to the purity itself arises. When the heart is in the heart, it has a place to arise. Purity originally has no form, but it sets a form for purity, and insists that only those who conform to this form are the skills of practice. Those who hold this view hinder and confuse the self. The original nature is actually bound by the so-called pure obsession.
"Good friends! If you practice the practice of 'not moving' and your mind does not arise, then when you look at anyone, you can turn a blind eye to his right and wrong, good and evil, and your mind will not be disturbed accordingly. This is the true self-nature.
"Good friends! Although the body of a foolish person is not moving at all, when he opens his mouth, he talks about other people's right and wrong, good and bad, which is contrary to Taoism. This is the same as being obsessed with keeping one's mind and looking clean. It is also an obstacle to Taoism. .”
Master Huineng taught everyone: "Good friends! What is sitting meditation? In my practice, there are no obstacles, and it is pervasive and free. I don't have any thoughts about all external states of good and evil. This is called sitting; I can see the inner meditation. The self-nature is still and unmoving, which is called Zen. Good teacher! What is meditation? Being beyond the outer appearance is Zen, and not distracting in the heart is called concentration. If you are attached to the outer appearance, your heart will definitely be scattered. , the heart will not be scattered. Human nature is originally pure and stable, but because of encountering external situations and thinking and clinging to them, the heart is scattered. If you can see all external situations and your heart is not scattered , this is the real samadhi.
"Good Knowing Advisors! Being beyond the outer appearance is Zen, and not being distracted in the heart is samadhi. External Chan and inner samadhi are meditation. "Bodhisattva Precepts Sutra" says: Self-nature is originally pure. Good Advisor! See and see self-nature is pure at all times, self-cultivation , self-mind, and naturally achieve Buddhahood."
