Chapter 21 Dinghui Pin

This article describes Master Huineng's belief that the method of the Southern School of Zen is based on Dinghui, and uses the relationship between lamps and light to imply the unity of Dinghui and the unity of body and function. "The time of wisdom is samadhi, and the time of samadhi is samadhi."It is advocated that one should not be divided into Dinghui and Dinghui, and one end should be paranoid. Then it is pointed out that the sect of this sect is based on "no-thought as the sect, no-phase as the body, and no-dwelling as the foundation". Being away from all appearances is called no-phase, and being uncontaminated with all external environments is called no-thought. For all time, good and evil, good and bad, The nature of human beings who do not think about love and regard it as illusory is non-abiding.He strongly advocates "walking, standing, sitting, lying down, always walking with a straight mind", teaching people to know their original mind and see their own nature.

Original
The teacher said to everyone: good teacher! My practice is based on Dinghui.Don't be confused by the public, don't talk about Dinghui, Dinghui is one, not two.Concentration is the body of wisdom, and wisdom is the use of steadiness, that is, when wisdom is concentrated, it is in wisdom, that is, when it is determined, wisdom is in concentration. If you understand this meaning, you will learn Dinghui and so on.People who study Taoism, Mo Yan said that there is a difference between samadhi and wisdom, and samadhi and samadhi. For those who see this, the Dharma has two aspects.Speaking good words, but not being kind in the heart, there is nothing but samadhi and wisdom, and samadhi and wisdom vary.If the heart and speech are good, and the inside and outside are the same, then the concentration and wisdom will be equal. The practice of self-enlightenment does not depend on arguing;Continually win and lose, but increase my method, and stay inseparable from the four phases.

Good friends! How can Dinghui still wait?Like lights. When there is a lamp, it is light; if there is no lamp, it is dark. The lamp is the body of light, and light is the function of the lamp.Although there are two names, the essence is the same. The Dinghui method is also the same.

The teacher said to everyone: good teacher!One-line samadhi ② Walk, stand, sit, lie down in all places, and always walk with the same mind. The Jingming Sutra says: The straight mind is the dojo ③, and the straight mind is the pure land ④.Don't act flattery with your heart ⑤, but speak straight with your mouth, and speak the samadhi with your mouth, but you can't be straight with your heart. But act with a straight mind and be free from attachments to all dharmas.Fascinating the appearance of the Dharma ⑥, practicing one-way samadhi, bluntly speaking, always sitting still, without arrogance, that is one-way samadhi. Those who make this solution are the same as ruthless, but it is the cause and condition that hinders the way.

Good friends!Dao must flow, why is it stagnant? If the heart does not hold back the law, the Tao is flowing. If the heart lives in the law, it is called self-binding.If you say that you often sit still, it is like Sariputta sitting in the forest⑦, but being beaten by Vimalakirti⑧.

Good friends! There are also people who teach sitting, watching the mind and observing tranquility, and not being able to move.If you don't know how to be charming, you will become obsessed with it, and there are many people like this.If you teach each other, you know a big mistake.

注释
①Four phases: self, person, sentient beings, and longevity.

② One-line samadhi: It is a kind of Buddhist method of reciting the truth. When practicing this kind of meditation, you should take the Dharma Realm (that is, the truth, the reality) as the object of visualization, concentrate on reciting the Buddha, you can see the Buddha, and there is no other Buddha apart from the heart. The Shenxiu Northern School of Zen advocates this kind of meditation, emphasizing the peace of mind of sitting quietly.Huineng opposed Shou Xin Kan Jing, and made a new interpretation of the Samadhi.Samadhi, also known as samadhi, samadhi, and samadhi, is translated as equal holding, samadhi, right samadhi, right acceptance, samādhi, straightening samadhi, right mind, etc. a stable state. In addition, when the common sayings describe the beauty, extreme, profoundness, tricks, etc., they are all called "Samadhi", that is, to apply Buddhist terms and change the meaning, which is of course completely different from the original meaning.

③ Daochang: The so-called Daochang generally refers to a place to practice Buddhism, so Daochang can be used as an alias for a temple. It is also known as Bodhi Dojo and Bodhi Field, specifically referring to the place where the Buddha became enlightened on the Vajra Seat under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Central India. This refers to the motivation and practice of the so-called attainment of Bodhi in Zen Buddhism.

④ Pure Land: The full name is Pure Land, Pure Land, and Pure Buddhaland. It is also called the pure place, the pure world, the pure country, the pure square, the pure domain, the pure world, the pure wonderful land, the wonderful land, the Buddha's place, and the Buddha's country. In this regard, the place where all living beings live is full of afflictions and filth, so it is called filthy land and filthy country.

⑤ flattery: flattery is not correct.

⑥ Faxiang: Synonymous with "legal nature".The appearance of the essence of all dharmas, or its meaning and content. Also refers to truth, reality.

⑦ Shariputra: One of the top ten disciples of the Buddha. After Shariputra returned to the Buddha, he often followed the Buddha, assisted in sanctification, and became the first among all disciples; he was known as the "wisdom first" among the Buddha's disciples with his wisdom to win the crowd.Banquet sitting: the meaning of sitting in meditation or sitting quietly.

[-] Vimalakirti: Bodhisattva name.Abbreviated as Vimo, he is a lay disciple of the Buddha and the elder of Vaisali City in Central India.Although he is in the common world, he is proficient in the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, and his cultivation is so lofty that even monks and disciples still cannot match it.

Translation
Master Huineng said to everyone, "Good friends! The Dharma door I teach is based on samadhi and wisdom. Don't be misled and think that samadhi and wisdom are different. Concentration and wisdom are one, not two parts. Meditation is the essence of wisdom, and wisdom is the function of meditation. When wisdom manifests, concentration exists in wisdom, and when entering concentration, wisdom exists in concentration. If you understand this truth, concentration and wisdom are equal. Learn from everyone People of Buddhism and Taoism should not say that one must first meditate and then develop wisdom, or that one must first develop wisdom before meditating, and think that there is a difference between the two. Those who have this kind of view think that Buddhism also has two appearances. Without good intentions, there is only the false name of Dinghui, but Dinghui is not the study of unity. If you have good intentions in your heart, speak kind words, and your heart and mouth correspond, and the inside and outside are the same, concentration and wisdom become one. Self-enlightenment and practice in this way do not depend on If you are obsessed with arguing about samadhi and wisdom, you will be the same as a foolish person. If you don't stop thinking about winning or losing, you will continue to aggravate your ego, and you will not be able to transcend the "I" , people, sentient beings, and longevity' four-phase attachment.

"Good Advisor! What is the relationship between samadhi and wisdom like? It's like a lamp. If there is a lamp, there is light. If there is no lamp, there is darkness. The lamp is the essence of light, and light is the function of the lamp. Although the names of the two are different, their essence is the same. The principle of the relationship between samadhi and wisdom is the same."

The master taught everyone: "Good friends! The samadhi of one practice means that no matter when and where, no matter whether you are walking or standing, sitting or lying down, you should practice directly according to your original mind. The place of the Buddha is the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss. Don’t flatter and crooked in your heart, but talk about straightness in your mouth, and proclaim one-line samadhi, but don’t practice straightness. Pursue a straight mind, and have no attachment to all phenomena. Stupid and deluded Some people are obsessed with the Dharma, clinging to one practice samadhi, and directly claim that as long as they often sit still and do not have delusions arising from their minds, this is one practice samadhi. People who explain this way are just like ruthless plants and trees, which hinder the cultivation of the Tao.

"Good Advisor! The Dao must be open and flowing, but why is it stagnant? If the mind is not attached to the Dharma, the Dao will be accessible. If the mind is attached to the Dharma, this is called being bound by the Dharma. If we say that we should always sit quietly and not move , then it will only be like Shariputra sitting in the woods for a long time, but was scolded by Vimalakirti.

"Good advisors! Some people teach people to sit quietly, keep their minds, observe stillness, keep their bodies still, and not get up for a long time. Based on this, they can build merit. Foolish people can't understand the principle of concentration and wisdom. , There are many people like this. Teaching like this is completely wrong."

Original
The teacher said to everyone: good teacher!Originally, there is no orthodox religion, and human nature is naturally beneficial and blunt.Gradually cultivate charmingly, realize people's sudden agreement, know one's own mind, and see one's own nature, that is, there is no difference. So Lipton gradually became a pseudonym.

Good friends! From the beginning, my practice has established no-thought as the principle, no-phase as the body, and no-dwelling as the foundation. Those without phases are in phases and separated from phases; those without thoughts are in minds without thoughts; those without dwellings are the nature of human beings. In the world, when there is good, evil, good and ugliness, and even grievances and relatives, when words touch thorns and quarrel with each other, they will be empty, not thinking of rewards and harms, in their thoughts, not thinking about the future. If you think before, now, and then, and the thoughts are continuous, this is called tie-up②.In all dharmas, if you can't stop thinking about it, that is, there is no bondage. This is based on non-living.

Good friends!Being separated from all appearances is called no appearance. Can be separated from the phase, that is, the dharma body is pure. This is the formless body.

Good friends! In every environment, the mind is not stained, which is called no thought. In terms of self-thought, always stay away from the surroundings, and don’t give birth to the mind in the surroundings; if you just don’t think about everything, get rid of all thoughts, and die when you stop thinking, and be born elsewhere, this is a big mistake. Learners think about it!If you don't know the meaning of the Dharma, you can still make mistakes, and even more so, others; So set up no-mind as the sect.

Good friends! How can no-thought be established as the sect?It is only because of the mouth that the seeing nature is charming, and there are thoughts on the situation, and when the thoughts are thought, they will have wrong views. All dusty delusions are born from this. There is no way to obtain the self-nature. If there is something to gain, it is wrong to talk about misfortunes and blessings. Therefore, this method establishes no-thought as its sect.Good friends!Nothing, nothing?Readers, what do you read?No one, no duality, no mind toiled by dust. Those who think about it, think about the true nature, the true nature is the body of the thought, and the thought is the function of the true.It is really like the self-nature, which cannot be recited by the eyes, ears, nose and tongue. It is true that there is nature, so think about it.If there is no such thing, the eyes, ears, color and sound will be broken at that time.

Good friends! It is really like the self-nature, although the six sense organs are aware, they are not contaminated by the world, and the true nature is always at ease. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures that one can be good at distinguishing the appearance of various dharmas, and remain unmoved in the first sense.

注释
① Compensation and harm: revenge.Reward, repay.

②Bie tie: It also means tie and tie.It means that the mind and body of all living beings are bound by afflictions, delusions or external things and lose their freedom, and they circulate in life and death for a long time.It is another name for affliction, because affliction is like a rope that can bind the body and mind, making people uncomfortable.

③First meaning: the supreme truth.Known as the ultimate truth, it is the most supreme, so it is said to be the first.

Translation
Master Huineng said: "Good friends! Originally, there is no distinction between true teachings. Human nature is only clever and dull. A dull person practices gradually, and a wise person suddenly realizes it. , there is no difference between epiphany and gradual enlightenment. So epiphany and gradual enlightenment are just a temporary pseudonym.

"Good Advisor! Since the time of the Buddha, the Dharma door I have preached has always been to establish no-mind as its purpose first, to take non-appearance as its body, and to take non-appearance as its root. The so-called non-appearance is based on all appearances and transcends all appearances. ;The so-called no-thought means to give birth to the mind and not be attached to the mind; the so-called no-dwelling is the nature of human beings. For all the good, evil, good and ugly in the world, even enemies, relatives and friends, attack, stab, and bully verbally. When lying or arguing, treat these as illusory, do not think about revenge and harm, and do not dwell on the past at all times. Thoughts are continuous and thinking is continuous, which is called self-binding. On the contrary, for all phenomena, there is no attachment between thoughts and thoughts, that is, there is no binding, and this is based on non-dwelling.

"Good Knowing Advisor! Transcending from all external forms is called formlessness. Being able to transcend form is the purity of the self-nature. This is taking formlessness as the essence.

"Good Advisor! To be uncontaminated in everything in the world is called no-thought. In terms of self-mind, always detach from all phenomena, and not be attached to the phenomena you encounter; if you just don't think about anything, It is a great mistake to think that you can go to other places to be reborn. Those who study Buddhism should think carefully! If you can’t see the great meaning of Buddhism, you will be wrong and deluded. That's all, but I still have to persuade others to do it again; I can't see my true nature because of my own mistakes, and I have slandered Buddhist scriptures. Therefore, we must establish no-thought as our purpose.

"Good friends! Why do you say that you should establish no-thoughts as your purpose? It's just because foolish people who claim to see their own nature have attachments to things and produce wrong views. All worldly mistakes and delusions are born from this. Self-nature Originally, it is not possible to obtain it through a specific method. If there is any gain, it is a worldly wrong view to randomly claim that it is misfortune, good fortune and fruit retribution. Therefore, this method establishes no-thought as its purpose. Good teacher! Nothing, what is nothing? Mindfulness, what is mindfulness? There is no dichotomy without distinction and opposition, and there is no obsession with the world. Mindfulness is the self-nature of the mind and the Buddha-nature. Mindfulness is the effect of true Buddha-nature. True-like Buddha-nature arises from the self-nature, not the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and other sensory organs can produce thoughts. True-like Buddha-nature is the inherent self-nature of oneself, from which Able to generate thoughts. If the true Buddha nature is not inherent in the self, then the six sensory organs such as eyes and ears should be necrotic.

"Good advisor! Thoughts arise from the true nature of oneself. Although the six sensory organs can see, hear, perceive, and understand, they are not affected by all external phenomena. The true nature is eternal and comfortable. Therefore, it is said in the Buddhist scriptures: Buddha nature can correctly understand all kinds of things and phenomena, fundamentally there is no birth and death, and it will not be shaken.”
