Master Huineng said: "You look at your own mind, don't be attached to external appearances. There are no four vehicles in Buddhism, because people have different levels in their own hearts. It is the Hinayana that can listen to Buddhist scriptures and then recite them. The meaning of Buddhism is the middle vehicle method, and the practice according to the Buddhist teachings is the Mahayana method. All teachings can be understood, all teachings are self-contained, everything is not contaminated, transcends all dharmas, and has nothing to gain. This is called the highest vehicle. .The multiplication means practice, not a verbal argument. You need to practice by yourself, don’t ask me. All the time, the self-nature remains unchanged.”
Zhichang paid his thanks and served Master Huineng until his death.

Seng Zhidao, a native of Nanhai, Guangzhou.Please Yi said: The student has read the Nirvana Sutra for more than ten years since he became a monk, but he has not understood the main idea.
The master said: Where do you not know?
Said: All actions are impermanent②, it is the law of birth and death; birth and death have already been completed, and tranquility is joy③.Doubt this.
The master said: Why are you suspicious?
Said: All sentient beings have two bodies, which are called the physical body and the dharma body.The physical body is impermanent, with birth and death; the dharma body is permanent, ignorant and unconscious.The scripture says: Birth and cessation have already passed away, and extinction is the joy, so what body is extinction without judging?Where is the pleasure?If the body is physical, when the physical body disappears, the four elements will be dispersed, and it will be suffering, which cannot be described as joyful.If the dharma body is extinguished, it is like grass, trees, tiles and stones, who should enjoy it?Furthermore, dharmata is the body of birth and death, and the five aggregates are the functions of birth and death; one body has five functions, and birth and death are constant.When it is born, it is used from the body, and when it dies, it is absorbed and returned to the body.If you listen to rebirth, it means that there are sentient beings, which are endless and immortal.If you don't listen to rebirth, you will return to death forever, just like a heartless thing.If so, then all dharmas will be suppressed by Nirvana, and they will not be born, so what joy is there?
The teacher said: You are a disciple of the Buddha, why do you practice heretics to break away from common and wrong views⑦, and discuss the highest vehicle?According to what you said, that is, there is a dharma body outside the physical body, which is separated from birth and death and seeks solitary cessation.It is also promoted that Nirvana is always happy, and the words are useful for the body.Si Nai is stingy about life and death, and indulges in worldly happiness.Now you should know that the Buddha is all charming, recognize the harmony of the five aggregates as the self-identity[-], and distinguish all dharmas as the appearance of dust, like life and hate death, wandering thoughts, don't know dreams and falsehoods, suffer reincarnation in vain, and turn into suffering with constant happiness and Nirvana Phase, seeking all day long.For this reason, the Buddha showed the true bliss of Nirvana. There is no sign of birth in a moment, and there is no sign of cessation in a moment, and there is no birth and death to be extinguished.When present, there is no amount of present, which is called constant happiness.There is no one to receive this happiness, and there is no one who does not accept it. How can it be called one body and five functions?What's more, it is said that Nirvana prohibits all dharmas and makes them never live. This is to slander the Buddha and destroy the Dharma.Listen to my verse:
Unsurpassed great nirvana, bright and eternally silent.
All ignorance calls death; Heretics insist on severance;
People who seek the second vehicle think that there is nothing to do;
As far as I can tell, 62 see this ⑩.
What is the true meaning of false names?
There are only too many people, and mastery has no choice.
Knowing the five skandhas, as well as the self in the skandhas, manifesting all forms, sounds, sounds, and appearances, equal like a dream, without ordinary holy views;
Without the interpretation of Nirvana, the two sides and three boundaries are broken B11.
Always use the faculties instead of thinking;
Separate all dharmas, don't afford to think separately.
The kalpa fire burns the bottom of the sea, the wind blows and the mountains strike each other, the joy of eternal extinction, the same is true of nirvana.
Now I forcefully say it, so that you can give up your wrong views, and you should not explain it according to your words, so that you may know a little bit.
Zhidao became enlightened after hearing the verse, and retreated after saluting enthusiastically.

Monk Zhidao, a native of Nanhai, Guangzhou.Ask Master Huineng for advice: "I have read the Nirvana Sutra for more than ten years since I became a monk, but I still don't understand the main meaning of the scriptures. I hope the master will teach me."
Master Huineng asked, "What do you not understand?"
Zhidao said: "There is this sentence in the scriptures, 'All things are impermanent, and they are the law of birth and death; birth and death are already gone, and peace and death are joy'. I am puzzled by this sentence."
Master Huineng said, "What doubts do you have?"
Zhidao said: "All sentient beings have two bodies, the physical body and the law body. The body is changing, and there is life and death; the law body is eternal, ignorant and unconscious. It is said in the Buddhist scriptures that birth and death have passed away, and extinction is joy. I don’t know which body is extinguished? Which body is enjoying pleasure? If it is the physical body, then when the physical body is destroyed, the physical body composed of the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind will all be dispersed. This is suffering. Since suffering cannot be called happiness. If the dharmakaya is dead, just like grass, trees, tiles and stones, who will bear the joy? In addition, dharmata is the essence of birth and death, and the five aggregates are the functions of birth and death; one subject has five kinds Function, birth and death should be eternal. Birth is to generate and function from the body, and cessation is to absorb these five kinds of functions and return them to the law. If they are allowed to regenerate, then all sentient beings will not be annihilated. If they are not allowed to regenerate, Then it will return to nirvana forever, equal to grass, trees, tiles and stones and other ruthless things. In this way, all dharmas will be subdued by Nirvana, and even if they cannot be reborn, what joy will there be?"
Master Huineng said: "You are a disciple of Buddhism, how do you learn the prejudices of heretics' annihilation and eternity, and use them to discuss the highest Buddhism? According to what you said, it means that there is a Dharma body besides the physical body, which is beyond the body. Birth and death, seeking to attain extinction. Also speaking of Nirvana and constant bliss, it means that there is a body that is being used. You are obsessed with life and death, indulging in worldly enjoyment. You should know by now that all obsessed people take the five Aggregate and cooperation are the reality of the self, distinguishing all dharmas as external phenomena, greedy for survival, and loathing death, not knowing that everything in the world is dreamy and false, futile and useless, suffering from reincarnation, but recognizing the eternal bliss of Nirvana as suffering, Chasing and seeking worldly desires all day long. It is precisely because of compassion for them that the Buddha shows the true bliss of Nirvana. There is no sign of birth in an instant, no sign of cessation in an instant, and there is no sign of birth and death to perish. Then the true nirvana appears in front of the eyes. Even when it appears in front of the eyes, there is no such quantity as "appearing". What's more, it is said that Nirvana suppresses all dharmas, so that these things will never be reborn. This is really slandering the Buddha and slandering the Buddha's teaching. Listen to my gatha." The gatha said:
Unsurpassed great nirvana, bright and eternally silent.

People who seek the second vehicle think that there is nothing to do;

Then he asked: What should I do, that is, not fall into class?

Said: The holy truth is not for ②.
The teacher said: What class do you fall into?
Said: If the holy truth is not established, what class exists?
The teacher's deep weapon makes people think first.One day, the teacher said, "You should divide one side, and there is no order to cut it off."
Thinking that he had obtained the Dharma, he returned to Qingyuan Mountain in Jizhou to promote the Dharma in Shaohua.Posthumous posthumous Zen Master Hongji.
Zen master Huairang ③, also the son of Jinzhou Du Shi.At the first visit to the Anguo division in Songshan Mountain, Anfa's Caoxi participated in the buckle.Let it be Sunday.
The master said: Where did it come from?
Said: Songshan.
The master said: What is it, why is it here?
Said: If you say it looks like a thing, you won't hit it ⑤.
The master said: Is it still possible to practice and prove it?
Said: Cultivating evidence means not being without ⑥, pollution means not being able to.
The teacher said: Only this does not pollute, and it is the protection of all Buddhas.As you are, so am I.Western Paradise Prajna Doro Prophecy⑦: A horse comes out of your feet, and tramples and kills all people in the world⑧.It should be in your heart, no need to speak quickly!
Let suddenly get a contract, and then serve for fifteen years, becoming more and more profound.Later, he went to Nanyue to expound on Zen Buddhism.

Master Huineng valued him very much and made Xingsi the first one.One day, Master Huineng said: "You should educate one side alone, and don't let the Dharma be cut off."
After receiving the teachings, Xingsi returned to Qingyuan Mountain in Jizhou to spread Buddhism and enlighten it widely.Posthumous posthumous Zen master Hongji.
Zen Master Huairang, the son of Du Shi in Jinzhou.At first, he paid homage to Master Huineng of Songshan Mountain, and Master Hui'an asked him to visit Master Huineng at Caoxi Mountain.Zen Master Huairang came to Caoxi Mountain and paid homage to Master Huineng.
Master Huineng said, "Where did you come from?"
Zen Master Huairang said, "Mount Song."
Master Huineng said, "What is it and how did it come about?"
Zen Master Huairang said: "It is wrong to say that it looks like a thing."
Master Huineng said, "Can I still practice enlightenment?"
Chan Master Huairang said: "Practice to realize enlightenment is not non-existent, and it is impossible to obtain it after being immersed."
Master Huineng said: "It is the point of being free from pollution, which is the common protection of all Buddhas. You are like this, and so am I. Master Prajna Doro in West Tianzhu once predicted: 'A small horse will appear under your door. Maju, his wisdom can conquer the world.' This prophecy will be fulfilled in you, wait for the time, don't say it too early."
Huai Rang suddenly became enlightened, and he served Master Huineng for 15 years, and his practice became more and more mysterious and profound.Later, he went to Hengshan Mountain in Nanyue and vigorously expounded Zen Buddhism.

Ce Yun: King Weiyin has already achieved it before, and King Weiyin has passed away. Self-enlightenment without a teacher is all natural heresy.
Said: May the benevolent be my evidence.
Ce Yun: I speak lightly. Caoxi has the Sixth Patriarch who gathers from all directions and is a recipient of the Dharma.If you go, go with you.
Jue Sui came to participate with the same strategy.Go around the teacher three times, and stand with vibrating tin.
The master said: "The husband of the Samana ④ has three thousand majestic appearances and eighty thousand fine deeds ⑤.Where does the great virtue come from ⑥, born big and slow?
Jue said: Life and death matter, impermanence is swift.
The teacher said: Why don't you realize that there is no life, and there is no speed?
Said: The body has no birth, and the origin has no speed.
The teacher said: If so!If so!
Xuanjue Fang paid respects with dignity, and left in a moment.
The master said: Is it too fast to return?
Said: This is not moving, how can there be speed?
The master said: Who knows what is not moving?
Said: The benevolent are self-generated and differentiated.
The master said: You really have the idea of lifelessness.
Said: How can there be any intention to live without life?
The master said, "Who should separate if you don't want to?"
Said: "Separation is not intentional."
The teacher said: How wonderful!Stay overnight.
It is called one night sleep.Later, he wrote a Taoist song, which became popular in the world.

If it is the physical body, then when the physical body is destroyed, the physical body composed of the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind will all be dispersed. This is suffering. Since suffering cannot be called happiness. If the dharmakaya is dead, just like grass, trees, tiles and stones, who will bear the joy? In addition, dharmata is the essence of birth and death, and the five aggregates are the functions of birth and death; one subject has five kinds Function, birth and death should be eternal. Birth is to generate and function from the body, and cessation is to absorb these five kinds of functions and return them to the law. If they are allowed to regenerate, then all sentient beings will not be annihilated. If they are not allowed to regenerate, Then it will return to nirvana forever, equal to grass, trees, tiles and stones and other ruthless things. In this way, all dharmas will be subdued by Nirvana, and even if they cannot be reborn, what joy will there be?"
Master Huineng said: "You are a disciple of Buddhism, how do you learn the prejudices of heretics' annihilation and eternity, and use them to discuss the highest Buddhism? According to what you said, it means that there is a Dharma body besides the physical body, which is beyond the body. Birth and death, seeking to attain extinction. Also speaking of Nirvana and constant bliss, it means that there is a body that is being used. You are obsessed with life and death, indulging in worldly enjoyment. You should know by now that all obsessed people take the five Aggregate and cooperation are the reality of the self, distinguishing all dharmas as external phenomena, greedy for survival, and loathing death, not knowing that everything in the world is dreamy and false, futile and useless, suffering from reincarnation, but recognizing the eternal bliss of Nirvana as suffering, Chasing and seeking worldly desires all day long. It is precisely because of compassion for them that the Buddha shows the true bliss of Nirvana. There is no sign of birth in an instant, no sign of cessation in an instant, and there is no sign of birth and death to perish. Then the true nirvana appears in front of the eyes. Even when it appears in front of the eyes, there is no such quantity as "appearing". What's more, it is said that Nirvana suppresses all dharmas, so that these things will never be reborn. Unsurpassed great nirvana, bright and eternally silent.
All ignorance calls death; Heretics insist on severance;
People who seek the second vehicle think that there is nothing to do;

Knowing the law of the five aggregates, as well as the self in the aggregates, manifesting all forms and images, one sound and one sound, being equal like a dream, not giving up ordinary holy views; not understanding Nirvana, breaking two sides and three boundaries.

Separate all dharmas, don't afford to think separately.

Master Prajna Doro in West Tianzhu once predicted: 'A small horse will appear under your door. Maju, his wisdom can conquer the world.' This prophecy will be fulfilled in you, wait for the time, don't say it too early."

Said: The body has no birth, and the origin has no speed.

The master said: Is it too fast to return?
Said: This is not moving, how can there be speed?
The master said: Who knows what is not moving?
Said: The benevolent are self-generated and differentiated.
The master said: You really have the idea of lifelessness.
Said: How can there be any intention to live without life?
The master said, "Who should separate if you don't want to?"
Said: "Separation is not intentional."
