Chapter 28
①Yongjia Xuanjue Chan Master: The author of "Yongjia Zhengdao Song", a native of Yongjia, Wenzhou, with a common surname Dai, style name Mingdao, and name Yongjia Xuanjue. He became a monk at the age of eight, explored Sanzang extensively, especially through Tiantai Zhiguan.Later, he built his own Zen nunnery under the side rock of Longxing Temple in Wenzhou, where he lived and studied alone, and often practiced meditation.Occasionally, because of Zuoxi Xuanlang's encouragement, he had the ambition to travel to Fangfang, and traveled with Dongyang Xuance to seek the way. When I arrived at Yunyang, I visited Caoxi Huineng, asked and answered Huineng and got his approval. Huineng stayed for one night and returned to Longxing Temple the next day. People at that time called it "one night sleep".Afterwards, scholars gathered together and named him Master Zhenjue.Xuan Lang donated a book to recruit Shan Qi, and the teacher wrote back and dismissed him. After sitting in silence, Shishou is 49 years old.The heirs of the law include Huicao, Huite, Dingchi, Xuanji and others. His works include ten volumes of "Zen Yongjia Collection" (collected by Wei Jing, the governor of Gyeongju), one "Song of Proving the Tao", one volume of "Zen Enlightenment and Perfection", etc.

②Tiantai Zhiguan Method: Tiantai, or Tiantai Sect, is one of the sects of Chinese Buddhism.Because it pays attention to the "Lotus Sutra", it is also called "Fahuazong".Tiantai School advocates concentration (stopping) and wisdom (viewing) as the main content of practice, so the "stopping and viewing method" is used to summarize the theory and practice of Tiantai School.

③ Prestige Sound King: Also known as Lonely Interesting Sound King Buddha. It is the first Buddha name of the solemn kalpa in the past. "King Weiyin has already passed away" is a common phrase used by Zen monks, and it is used to point out students' own true colors, which means "before parents were born" and "before the world opened".Gaiweiyinwangfo is the name of the first Buddha in the past solemn kalpa, so it represents the immeasurable and boundless long time ago.

④Sramana: Literally translated as diligence, hard work, meritorious service, diligence, tranquility, rest, peace of mind, rest of evil, practice of Taoism, lack of Taoism, poverty, etc., that is, the meaning of diligently practicing Buddhism and Taoism and resting all troubles, for those who become monks and monks The general name of the term refers to shaving off the beard and hair, stopping all evil and bad things, regulating the body and mind, and diligently cultivating all good things, in order to achieve the state of Nirvana.

⑤Three thousand prestige, eighty thousand fine deeds: the practice of maintaining daily prestige for Buddhist disciples. The actions of monks have mighty virtues and rules, which are called majestic rituals; various subtle rules of rituals other than the precepts are called fine conduct. "Three thousand" and "eighty thousand" refer to a large number, not a real number. In general, "three thousand dignified manners, eighty thousand fine conduct" refers to the fine conduct that should be paid attention to by the monks in the four dignified manners of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down.

⑥ Great Virtue: India's respectful title for Buddha, Bodhisattva or eminent monk. The elder among the monks is also called the great virtue. In China, the term "Great Virtue" is not used to refer to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, but as a respectful title to eminent monks.

Translation
Zen master Xuanjue of Yongjia, the son of the Dai family in Wenzhou, studied scriptures and theories when he was a child, and was proficient in the teachings of tranquility and insight of Tiantai sect.Because I read the Vimalakirti Sutra, I understood the nature of my own mind.Occasionally, Xuan Ce, a disciple of Master Huineng, came to visit and talked with him about Buddhism. What Yongjia Xuanjue said was indistinctly consistent with the true meaning of Buddha.

Xuan Ce said, "Who did you learn from to obtain the Fa?"

Yongjia Xuanjue said: "When I listen to the Mahayana classics, they all have a relationship with each other. Later, when I read the "Vimalakirti Sutra", I enlightened to the Buddha's Mind School, but no one has confirmed my opinion."

Xuan Ce said: "Before Weiyin King Buddha, it was possible to learn by oneself without a teacher. After Weiyin Wang Buddha, self-enlightenment without a teacher's transmission is naturally all outsiders."

Yongjia Xuanjue said: "I hope you can prove it for me."

Xuan Ce said: "My words are light, and I can't prove it for you. There is the Sixth Patriarch Huineng Master in Caoxi Mountain, and people from all directions gather there, and they all have received the Dharma. If you want to go, I will go with you. "

Yongjia Xuanjue accompanied Xuance to pay homage to the Sixth Patriarch Huineng.Xuanjue walked around Huineng three times, raised his tin stick and stood there motionless.

Master Huineng said: "A monk should have all kinds of precepts and rituals, such as three thousand dignified manners and eighty thousand fine practices. Where did you come from, great master, to be so arrogant and disrespectful to me?"

Xuanjue said: "The life and death of a person is the most important thing, and impermanence alternates and changes rapidly."

Master Huineng said: "Why don't you understand the truth of impermanence and speed?"

Xuanjue said: "What you understand is life and death, and what you understand is impermanence and swiftness."

Huineng said, "That's right! That's right!"

Only then did Xuan Jue clean up his appearance and pay homage to Master Huineng, and after a while he bid farewell to Master Huineng and wanted to leave.

Master Huineng said, "You're going back now, isn't it too soon?"

Xuanjue said: "There is no movement or immobility, how can there be happiness and unhappiness?"

Master Huineng said: "Who can know if it is not moving?"

Xuanjue said: "This is because you have developed a heart of distinction."

Master Huineng said: "You have already fully understood the principle of no birth and no death."

Xuanjue said: "Is there any meaning in the absence of birth and death?"

Master Huineng said: "If there is no meaning, who can distinguish it?"

Xuanjue said: "The distinction itself is meaningless."

Master Huineng said, "Okay! Let's stay for one night."

It was called "one night sleep".Later, Yongjia Xuanjue wrote "Song of Enlightenment", which was spread and popular in the world.

Original
The Zen master Zhihuang, who first joined the Five Patriarchs, claimed to have obtained the correct experience.Sitting in a nunnery for a long time ②, accumulated for 20 years.Master disciple Xuan Ce traveled to Heshuo, heard the name of the emperor, built a nunnery and asked, "What are you doing here?"
Huang said: Enter into meditation ③.

Ce Yun: Ruyun enters into samadhi, do you enter into it intentionally or unintentionally? If there is no intention to enter, all ruthless plants, trees, tiles and stones should be samadhi; if there is a heart to enter, all sentient beings, including the flow of consciousness, should also be samadhi.

Huang said: I am entering the samadhi, and I don't see the heart of existence or non-existence.

Ce Yun: The mind that does not see existence or non-existence is permanent concentration. How can there be discrepancies? If there is any discrepancy, it is not Dading ④!
God is wrong. After a long time, I asked, "Who is the master and heir?"
Ce Yun: I am a teacher of the Sixth Patriarch of Caoxi.

Huang Yun: What is the Sixth Patriarch's meditation?

Ce Yun: My teacher said, Miao Zhan passed away, body and function are like ⑤, the five Yins are inherently empty ⑥, and the six dusts do not exist ⑦.No going out, no going in, no chaos. There is no abiding in the Zen nature, and there is no abiding in Zen.The Zen nature has no birth, and the Zen thought is free from birth. The mind is like space, and it has no volume.

Huang Wen said that he came directly to see the teacher.

The teacher asked: Where does the benevolent come from?
Huang has the front edge.

Teacher Yun: As I said, your mind is like space, you are free from emptiness, you have no hindrance in application, you have no mind in movement or stillness, you forget all holy feelings, you lose everything you can have, your nature is like nature, and there is no irregularity.

Huang then realized that nothing he had gained in the past 20 years would affect him. That night, the scholars in Hebei Province heard a voice in the sky saying: "Zen Master Huang attained the Tao today!"Empress Huang's speech, returned to Hebei, and enlightened the four congregations⑩.

注释
① Zhengshou: It is a different name for meditation.Righteousness means set your mind and avoid evil thoughts.Suffering means that there is no thought or thought and the Dharma is in the heart. Therefore, the right feeling is the state of being free from false thoughts and receiving the object. That is to say, enter the samadhi, and make the body and mind receive the appearance of equality and peace with samadhi.

②An: A simple hut covered with vegetation. It is the house where monks and retired people live away from the village, and it is used as a place of practice.

③Entering concentration: Entering the meaning of meditation, that is, capturing the scattered mind and entering a stable and immobile state of mind.Sometimes the silence of the Taoist is also called entering meditation. Here refers to the former.

④Da Ding: As one of the three virtues of the Buddha (Da Ding, Da Zhi, Da Compassion), the clarity and tranquility of the Buddha's mind is called Da Ding.Dading can cut off all delusions, so it is also called Dading as the virtue of breaking. This can be regarded as the meditation theory of Zen Buddhism.

⑤ body function: refers to the nature and function of all laws.

⑥Five Yins: Same as "Five Aggregates".

⑦Six dusts: Refers to the six states of color dust, sound dust, fragrance dust, taste dust, touch dust, and dharma dust, and is also called external dust and six thieves.Dust is the meaning of pollution. With the six consciousnesses and six states, it pollutes the six roots and can obscure the true nature, so it is called dust. These six dusts are outside the mind, so they are called outer dusts. These six objects are like thieves, able to rob all good dharmas, so they are called six thieves.

⑧Nengsuo: That is, the combination of "energy" and "suo".The automatic method (subject) is called energy, and the passive method (object) is called place. For example, the "eye" that can see things is called seeing; the "thing" that is seen by the eye is called seeing.Another example is that the six sense organs are against the six sense objects, the six sense organs are energy conditions, and the six sense sense objects are objects. In short, "energy" and "suo" have a relationship that is inseparable and causal, so it is called "energy" and "suo" as one.

⑨Nature and appearance: Refers to body and appearance. The unchanging and absolute real noumenon, or the self of things, is called sex; the phenomena and phases of difference and change are called phase.Sex and appearance are actually the same, only the names are different. To talk about nature is to talk about form, and to talk about form is to talk about sex.For example, talking about the nature of fire means talking about the element of heat, and talking about the element of heat means talking about the element of fire. For example, it is the state of self-nature that is immobile, silent, equal and indubitable, and does not allow upside-down distinctions. The true suchness as proved by the intellect is called "such as".

⑩Four congregations: Refers to the four kinds of disciples that make up the Buddhist sect, also known as the four generations, the four tribes, and the four disciples. There are two meanings: one refers to the four congregations of the family, namely monks, nuns, monks, and monks. The second refers to the four groups of monks and laymen, namely, monks, nuns, upasakas, and upasakas.

Translation
Zen Master Zhihuang, who first paid homage to the Fifth Patriarch Hongren, claimed to have received the authentic teaching.Zhihuang lived in the nunnery and meditated for a long time, accumulatively for 20 years.Xuan Ce, a disciple of Master Huineng, traveled to the Hebei area and heard of Zhi Huang's reputation. He visited Zhi Huang's nunnery and asked, "What are you doing here?"

Zhihuang replied, "Entered in samadhi."

Xuan Ce asked: "When you talk about samadhi, do you enter samadhi intentionally or unintentionally? If you enter samadhi without thinking, all plants, trees, tiles, stones, and sentient beings should be able to enter samadhi; if you enter samadhi with intention, all Conscious sentient beings and the like should also be able to achieve trance."

Zhihuang said: "When I am really in meditation, I can't see the thought of 'being or not'."

Xuan Ce said: "If you can't see the thought of 'existence or non-existence', it is permanent samadhi. How can there be discrepancies? If there are discrepancies and discrepancies, then it is not true samadhi!"

Zhihuang was speechless. After a long time, he asked Xuan Ce: "Who did you learn from?"

Xuan Ce said: "My master is Master Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Caoxi Mountain."

Zhihuang asked: "What does the Sixth Patriarch Huineng think is meditation?"

Xuan Ce said: "My master said that the dharma body is harmonious, mysterious, profound, and eternally silent. Its nature, body, and function are the same. The five aggregates are in harmony. It is originally empty, and the six dusts are not real. It neither comes out nor enters. It is not attached to it. The nature of Zen is non-attachment and stagnation, and one must live in the tranquility of Zen. The nature of Zen has no birth, and one must be free from clinging to thoughts of Zen. The mind is like space, and there is no measure of space.”

Hearing this, Zhihuang came directly to pay homage to Master Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch.

Master Huineng asked, "Where are you from?"

Zhihuang described all the reasons for meeting Xuan Ce.

Master Huineng said: "As Xuan Ce said, as long as your mind is like space, and you don't cling to false views of space, you can use it freely without hindrance. You don't care about movement and stillness. Forgetting all the two, the subjective and objective objects can be eliminated at the same time, and the nature and appearance are the same, and you will be in meditation all the time, and there will be no moment when you are not in meditation."

Then Zhi Huang became enlightened, and the attachment he had gained from 20 years of practice did not leave any influence for a moment. That night, officials and common people in the north of the Yellow River heard a voice in the sky saying: "Zhen Master Zhihuang has become a Buddha today!"

Original
A monk asked the teacher, "Who will get the meaning of Huangmei?"
The teacher said: Those who know the Dharma will gain it.

The monk said: Can the monk still have it?

The teacher said: I don’t know Buddhism②.

The teacher wants to wash the clothes he has given him for a day, but there is no beautiful spring.Because about five miles behind the temple, I saw lush mountains and forests, and the auspicious air was circling, and the teacher shook the land of Xi Zhuo, and the spring came out in response.Accumulated as a pond, but knelt down on the clothes-washing stone.Suddenly a monk came to worship and said, "Fang Bian is from Xishu."Yesterday in South Tianzhu, I saw Master Bodhidharma, and asked Fang Bian to go to Tang soil as soon as possible: I passed on the Great Kasyapa Zhengfayanzang③, and Sanghali④.Fang Bian came from afar, wishing to see my teacher pass on the mantle.

The teacher showed it.The next time I asked the Venerable Venerable Master what career he wanted to pursue?
Said: good plastic.

The teacher said solemnly, "Try to make a model."

There is no way to argue. After a few days, the truth will be shaped, it can be seven inches high, and the song is perfect.

The teacher laughed and said: You only understand the plastic nature, but you don't understand the Buddha nature.

Shi Shu hand rubs Fang to debate the top.Said: Forever a field of blessings for mankind and heaven.

A monk gave a verse to Chan Master Wolun and said ⑤:

The crouching wheel has tricks, which can break hundreds of thoughts.

Feeling sorry for the situation, Bodhi grows day by day.

The teacher heard it, and said: This verse does not clarify the mind.If you follow it, you will be bound.

Because of a verse that says:

Huineng has no tricks and keeps thinking;

Counting on the heart of the situation, how long does Bodhi do?
注释
① Huangmei meaning: This refers to the teaching method of the fifth patriarch Hongren.

②I don't know Buddhism: This sentence emphasizes Zen self-realization and self-enlightenment, and advocates that apprentices cannot obtain anything ready-made from the teacher.

③Great Kasyapa: It is the abbreviation of Mahakasyapa, one of the top ten disciples of the Buddha, and has titles such as "the first in Toutuo" and "the first in ascent".Great Kassapa was a native of Mahasadhara Village in Rajagha City, and the son of the rich Brahmin Nikulu Tuojiabo.Because it was born under the Pippala tree, it was named Pippalayana; and because it came from the Dakasyapa species, it was called Dakasyapa. Not long after becoming a monk, he met the Buddha and was enlightened.Eight days later, he developed righteous wisdom, took off his own Sanghala to worship the Buddha, and wore the dung sweeping clothes bestowed by the Buddha, and attained Arhatship.Da Kasyapa was famous for his wealth when he was a layman, but after he became a monk, he had little desire to be content and often practiced the Dhuta practice. In addition, in ancient times, Kasyapa was regarded as the first ancestor of Fu Fa Zang, especially the story of "smiling with flowers" was passed down by Zen scholars, and according to this, Kasyapa was respected as the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism in Tianzhu.Zhengfayan Tibetan: Also known as "Pure Dharma Eye". "Dharma Eye" refers to the eyes of the Buddha's mind to see the Dharma; "Zang" means deep and wide, and contains ten thousand virtues. In Zen Buddhism, Zhengfayanzang is called the heart seal of its non-religious teaching.

④Sangha pear: It is one of the three clothes. That is, more than nine clothes.Because it must be cut before it can be made, it is called heavy clothing, double clothing, and repeated clothing.Because of the large number of strips, it is called miscellaneous clothes. It is usually worn when going out and other solemn ceremonies, such as entering the palace, settling, begging for food, ascension to the throne, subduing heretics, etc., so it is called entering the palace settling clothes. It is also called the overcoat because it is the largest among all the garments.

⑤ Zen Master Wolun: The deeds of this Zen master are unknown.

Translation
A monk asked Master Huineng, "Who got the mantle of Master Hongren, the Fifth Patriarch of Huangmei?"

Master Huineng said: "Those who comprehend the Dharma have gained it."

The monk asked: "Master, have you got it?"

Master Huineng said, "I don't understand Buddhism."

One day, Master Huineng wanted to wash the cassock passed down by the Fifth Patriarch Hongren, but there was no good clear spring around. Therefore, the master came to a place five miles away from the temple. Seeing the lush mountains and forests here, surrounded by auspicious aura, Master Huineng raised his tin staff and poked the ground. The spring water gushed out immediately.A pool was formed, and Master Huineng knelt on the stone to wash his cassock.Suddenly, a monk came to pay homage and said: "I am from Xishu. Yesterday in the South Tianzhu Kingdom, I met Master Damo. He told me to come to Tang Kingdom as soon as possible. The teachings and robes have been handed down to the sixth generation of patriarchs, and they are currently in Caoxi Mountain, Shaozhou. You go to pay homage to him. Fang Bian, I came from afar, hoping to see the cassock handed down by Patriarch Bodhidharma."

Master Huineng took out the cassock and showed it to him. Then ask, "What are you good at?"

Fang Bian said: "I am good at sculpture."

Huineng said seriously: "Try to carve it for me."

Fang Bian was momentarily at a loss. After a few days, a statue of Buddha was carved, seven inches high, with wonderful songs and very lifelike.

Master Huineng said with a smile: "You only understand the characteristics of sculpture, but you don't understand Buddha nature."

Master Huineng stroked the top of Fang Bian's head and said, "I hope that you will become a field of blessings planted by humans and heavens in every lifetime."

A monk showed a verse by Master Wolun:

The crouching wheel has tricks, which can break hundreds of thoughts.

Feeling sorry for the situation, Bodhi grows day by day.

Master Huineng heard this and said, "This gatha has not yet clearly seen the self-nature. If you practice according to this gatha, you will increase your bondage even more."

Therefore, a verse was taught, saying:

Huineng has no tricks and keeps thinking;

Counting on the heart of the situation, how long does Bodhi do?
