Chapter 4 Diamond Sutra (3)
Subhuti replied: "As far as I understand the meaning of the Buddha's teachings, there is no fixed law that can be called supreme enlightenment, and there is no fixed law that is proclaimed by the Tathagata. Why? Because the Tathagata said It cannot be grasped, nor can it be interpreted in words. It is neither Buddhist nor non-Buddhist. Why? All sages have different levels of enlightenment in terms of the unconditioned dharma they know. difference."

Original
"Subhuti, what do you think? If a person is full of the seven treasures of the world of three thousand dagans and uses them as alms, wouldn't the person's merits be much?"

Subhuti said: "There are many, World Honored One. Why? It is merit, not the nature of merit. That's why the Tathagata said that there are many merits."

"If someone accepts and upholds the four-sentence verse in this sutra and explains it to others, his blessings will be better than others. Why? Subhuti, all the Buddhas and the Buddhas' Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi Dharma are from this Sutra. Subhuti, the so-called Dharma is not the Dharma.”

注释
①Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds: The cosmology of the ancient Indians. "Shi" refers to time, and "jie" refers to space. Also make one big three thousand worlds, one big three thousand worlds, three thousand worlds, etc.It refers to the world formed by three "thousand worlds" of small, medium and large. In ancient times, with Mount Sumeru as the center, surrounded by four continents and nine mountains and eight seas, it was called a small world.Combine one thousand small worlds into the small thousand world, combine one thousand small thousand worlds into the middle thousand world, and combine one thousand middle thousand worlds into the great thousand world.Because there are multiples of three thousand in the middle, the Great Thousand World is also called the Three Thousand Great Thousand World. However, according to the correct deduction, the so-called three thousand worlds are actually one billion small worlds, and the three thousand great thousand worlds are actually hundreds of billions of small worlds, which is really different from the general vague concept of infinite worlds and the whole universe.According to the cosmology of the Buddhist scriptures, the Three Thousand Worlds is a field taught by the Buddha, so it is also called a Buddha country.Qibao: Seven kinds of treasures, also known as Qizhen, refer to seven precious gems in the world. There are different sayings in various scriptures. The seven treasures mentioned in the "Prajna Sutra" are gold, silver, glass, coral, amber, clams, and agate. The seven treasures mentioned in the "Lotus Sutra" are gold, silver, glass, canal, agate, pearls, and roses. The seven treasures mentioned in the "Amitabha Sutra" are gold, silver, glass, glass, canal, red pearl, and agate. The seven treasures mentioned in "Great Wisdom" are gold, silver, glass, pear (crystal), giant canal, red pearl, and agate.

②Fordness: that is, the real, transcendent, non-phased merit, that is, the wisdom and merit in the self-nature.

③话 (jì): Also known as Shouluja, it is the calculation method of Indians for classic characters.Transliteration Gatuo, Gata, Gata, Gata, etc.Free translation of satire, gatha, ode, solitary chants, non-emphasis chants, chants, ballads, etc.In the Chinese translation of classics, there are many references to verses, but there is no consistent statement in each scripture. The volume of "Bai Lun Shu" points out that there are two kinds of gatha, one is called Tongyao, that is, Shoulujia, which is composed of 32 Sanskrit syllables; It is made up of four sentences. In Zen, when Zen monks become enlightened, some people often express their enlightened state in the form of verses.

Translation
The Buddha said: "Subhuti, what do you think? If someone gave all the seven kinds of treasures that fill the three thousand great thousand worlds, do you think this person will get a lot of merit and reward?"

Subhuti replied: "Many, Buddha. Why do you say that there are many blessings? Because such worldly blessings are empty, not non-appearing blessings, so the Tathagata said in this sense that the blessings obtained by this person Virtue and fruit repay many."

The Buddha also said: "If there is another person who can receive this scripture devoutly and faithfully, even if he holds four verses of it, and can explain it to others, then the blessing and fruit retribution obtained by this person will be better than giving a full three thousand. All the people of the seven kinds of treasures in the great thousand worlds. What is the reason? Subhuti, because all the Buddhas in the ten directions and the supreme, perfect and enlightened Dharma possessed by the Buddhas are all born from this sutra. Subhuti, the so-called Buddha Dharma , its nature is not real, so it is not the Dharma."

Original
"Subhuti, what do you think? If a streamer can make this thought, will I get the fruit of a streamer?"

Subhuti said: "No, World Honored One. Why is that? A stream-entry is called a stream-entry, but one that does not enter into anything, such as form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma, is called a stream-entrance."

"Subhuti, what do you think? Si Tuo Han can make this thought, do I have the fruit of Si Tuo Han?"

Subhuti said: "No, World Honored One. Why is that? Si Tuohan is called Si Tuo Han, but he has no communication. He is named Si Tuo Han."

"Subhuti, what do you think? Anagamin can make this thought, will I get the fruit of Anagamin?"

Subhuti said: "No, World Honored One. Why? The name of Anagamin is not to come, but in reality everything will come. That is why it is called Anagamin."

"Subhuti, what do you think? An arhat can do this thought ④, do I have the way of an arhat?"

Subhuti said: "No, World Honored One. Why? There is no such thing as an arhat. World Honored One, if an Arahant thinks this way, I will attain the way of an Arahant. That is for me, people, sentient beings, and life. World Honored One, the Buddha said that I Obtaining the Undisputed Samadhi ⑤, the most important among people, is the first arhat who is free from desire. World Honored One, I don’t think about it, I am an Arhat who is free from desire. Bodhi is a person who takes pleasure in Alanna practice⑥. Since Subhuti has nothing to do, he is called Subhuti, and he is a person who takes pleasure in Alanna practice.”

注释
① Xu Tuo Huan: The old translation is inflow, to flow, reverse flow, ditch port, etc., and the new translation is to preflow. It is the first fruit of the four fruits of the sound and hearing. The full name is Sutuopana, also known as Xuwuduo Abanna, Zhanglutuo Abanang, Zailuduo Abanna, etc. There are three meanings: [-]. Entering the stream means entering the stream of saints for the first time; [-]. Going against the stream means cutting off the confusion of the three realms and going against the stream of life and death; meaning of flow. Those who obtain this fruit will go through seven lives and deaths before entering Nirvana.

② Situhan: It is also translated as a fruit, also known as Shakyari Tuojiami.Literally translated as one coming, one coming and going, it is the second of the four fruits of the sound and hearing. It is also divided into Si Tuo Han Xiang and Si Tuo Han Guo, Si Tuo Han Xiang or called one Lai Guo Xiang, that is, the saint of the first fruit, and then cut off the first five grades of the delusion in the world of desire; if you cut off the desire The sixth level of cultivating confusion in the world has to go to heaven and come to the world to be reborn before it can reach the end. After that, it will no longer be reborn. righteous.

③ Anahan: The old translations are not coming, Anagami, Anagami, etc., and the free translations are not returning, not returning, not coming, not coming, not coming. From the point of view of name and appearance, the fruit of non-coming can have the concept of non-coming, and it is the third fruit of the four fruits of sravaka. It can also be divided into Anahanxiang and Anahan Fruit. If you cut off the confusion of the ninth rank in the desire world, it is called the Anahan Fruit; if you cut off the seventh or eighth rank, it is called the Anahan Goal. Those who have cultivated to this fruit position will be born in the formless realm in the future, and will not come to the desire realm to suffer life and death, so it is called non-return.

④Arhat: also known as Aluhan, A Luohe, A Luo He, Ali He, and Emperor Niu Luo, etc., and they are abbreviated as Arhat and Luo He.The free translation is to supply, to be true, to kill thieves, not to be born, not to be born, not to learn, to be a real person, etc.It is the fourth fruit of the four fruits of the sound and hearing, and belongs to the highest fruit position in the sound and hearing vehicle. It can also be divided into arhat orientation and arhat fruit, which are still in the stage of practice, and those who tend to be arhat are called arhat orientation. By.According to Arhat’s Ende, Arhat should be supported by the heaven and earth, and make a big blessing field for the world, which is called offering; , Arahant thoroughly proves the nature of non-birth and death, and is free from life and death, so it is called non-life.In a broad sense, it also generally refers to the highest fruit position in Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism, and is also one of the ten titles of Tathagata.

⑤ Wuzheng samadhi: It refers to the samadhi of living in emptiness and not having disputes with others.Zheng, that is, arguing, is a different name for troubles.Among the disciples of the Buddha, Subhuti, who is the first to understand emptiness, understands the principle of emptiness the most, so the non-controversial samadhi he obtained among all the disciples is the most important. The non-argument samadhi, in terms of external manifestations, means not arguing with others, and following all beings everywhere.I feel that the world is suffering enough, how can I argue with him and deepen his suffering? For example, from the perspective of the realization of Wuzheng Samadhi, because the Dharma has no self-nature, everything is just a pseudonym for interdependence, so it is a mental state with no worries, no desires, no thoughts, no arguing, and no desire to win.Wuzheng is the wisdom that can make all sentient beings not have troubles such as greed, hatred and ignorance, and has the power to stop other people's troubles, and also refers to the method of getting rid of troubles.Samadhi, also known as samadhi, or Samadhi, free translation is positive concentration, that is, a stable state in which the mind is set in one place (or one state).

⑥Alanna: The original meaning is "forest", and it is translated as a quiet place, a free place, a place without disputes, a place far away, etc. It refers to a place suitable for practice and living.Le Alanna practitioners are those who are happy to live and practice in the mountains and forests; those who like to practice pure and non-controversial practices in the clean mountains and forests. "Alanna" also means silence, that is, the body is quiet and troubles are subdued. When Xuanzang translated the "Diamond Sutra", he translated this place as "living without disputes".

The Buddha asked again: "Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think practitioners who have attained the holy fruition of the stream will have the thought of 'I have attained the fruition of the stream'?"

Subhuti replied: "No, World Honored One. Why? Sutuohuan means the sage flow of human beings, but in reality it is non-human. , to realize the state of no attachment to the five desires and the six dusts, so it is called Xutuohuan."

The Buddha then asked: "Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think practitioners who have attained the fruit of Si Tuo Han will have the thought of 'I have attained the fruit of Si Tuo Han'?"

Subhuti replied: "No, World Honored One. Why? Si Tuohan means one communication, but in reality, there is no communication. There is no distinction between communication and non-communication in the heart, so it is called Si Tuohan. "

The Buddha asked again: "Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that practitioners who have attained the holy fruit of Anahan will have thoughts like 'I have attained the fruit of Anahan'?"

Subhuti replied: "No, World Honored One. Why? Anahan means not to come, but in fact, everything comes, and there is no difference in my heart, so it is called Si Tuohan. .”

The Buddha continued to ask: "Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that practitioners who have attained the holy fruit of Arhat will have the thought of 'I have attained the fruit of Arhat'?"

Subhuti replied: "No, World Honored One. Why? Because there is no such thing as an arhat. World Honored One, if an Arahant has the thought of 'I have attained the state of Arhat', then he is attached to his own The appearance of others, the appearance of other people, the appearance of living beings, and the appearance of life. World Honored One, the Buddha said that I have realized the samadhi of non-conflict, and I am the first among human beings, and the first Arhat who is free from desires among Arhats. World Honored One, I I don't want to think that I am an Arahant who is free from all kinds of desires. World Honored One, if I have the thought of 'I have attained the status of Arahat', then the World Honored One will not say that I am an arhat who is happy to live in the mountains and forests. Alanna practitioners. It is because Subhuti does not have the attachment to practice and is only called Subhuti, so he is called a practitioner who likes to practice Alanna."

The Buddha told Subhuti: "What do you think? The Tathagata was in the place of Lantern Buddha in the past, did you gain anything from the Dharma?"

"No, World Honored One. The Tathagata is in the place of Lantern Buddha, and he has nothing to gain from the Dharma."

"Subhuti, what do you think? Isn't the bodhisattva adorned the Buddhaland?"

"No, World Honored One. What is the reason? Those who adorn the Buddhafield are not adorned, but adorned."

"Therefore, Subhuti, all bodhisattvas and mahasattvas should have pure minds in this way, should not dwell in forms to generate minds, should not dwell in sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and dharmas to generate minds, and should generate their minds without abiding. Subhuti, for example, there is a person who has the body of Mount Sumeru King, what do you think? Is the body big or not?"

Subhuti said, "Very great, World Honored One. Why? The Buddha said that the non-body is the great body."

注释
①Ran Deng Buddha: Transliterated as Ti He Ji Luo, Ti Huan Ji, etc., also known as Di Lan Buddha, Pu Guang Buddha, and Ding Guang Buddha. In the past life, he was the teacher who predicted the enlightenment of Sakyamuni Bodhisattva.Dingguang was originally the prince of Tihe Weiguosheng King, and the king entrusted the country to the prince before his death. But the prince knew the impermanence of the world, so he gave the country to his younger brother, but he became a monk himself, and finally became a Buddha, that is, the Lantern Buddha. It is said that when Sakyamuni was practicing Bodhisattva practice in the past, one day, he saw that the city was tidy and the streets were clean. He asked passers-by and found out that he was going to welcome Randeng Buddha. So I bought a golden lotus, and sincerely and joyfully went to make offerings to Lantern Buddha.Seeing the majesty of the Buddha and his disciples, reverence arose from the depths of our hearts. On the only way to enter the city, there was a puddle of water, so he fell on the ground, spread his head, covered the mud, and let the Buddha step on it.The Buddha knew that he believed in the Dharma-nature and obtained the tolerance of non-birth, so he wrote a record for him: "After 91 kalpas, when you complete the three monks, you should become a Buddha, named Sakyamuni."

②Adorned Buddha Land: Adorned means solemn and orderly, that is, arranging all kinds of treasures, flowers, treasure covers, banners, streamers, necklaces, etc., to decorate the solemn and pure Taoist temple or the country. To purify the turbid and evil world, that is, to adorn the Buddhaland, is based on the power of vows. The bodhisattva makes great vows, gathers companions who walk with the same vows, practices the merits of the six perfections and ten thousand deeds, and the good deeds of the four captures, and dedicates them to the land of the time when it is solemnly completed, which is called the solemn Buddhaland.

③Pure heart: refers to the heart of no doubt and pure faith, the heart of innocence far away from troubles, and the heart of pure self-nature.The first book of Shengman Treasure Grotto says: "A pure heart, a pure heart also has faith. A pure heart of faith, without a mixed heart of troubles, is called a pure heart." Colors give birth to mind, not sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and dharmas give birth to mind.”That is to say, there should be no attachment to the state of any object, beyond what can be treated, whether there is no distinction, and to generate a pure heart that is free from all attachments.

④ Mount Sumeru: Mount Sumeru, transliterated as Sumeru Mountain, Mount Sumeru, Mount Sumeru, Mount Xiumilou, etc. Miaoguang Mountain, Anmingyou Mountain, etc.It was originally the name of the mountain in Indian mythology, and it is still used in the Buddhist cosmology, saying that it is a high mountain standing in the center of a small world. With this mountain as the center, there are eight mountains and eight seas surrounding it in turn, forming a world (Xumu world).Mount Sumeru is 33 yojanas above the surface of the water, and [-] yojanas below the surface of the water. There are [-] heavenly palaces on the top of Mount Sumeru, where Emperor Shitian lives, and the Four Kings live on the four sides of the mountain. This mountain is made of four treasures of gold, silver, glass, and crystal. Flowers and fruits prosper, fragrance blows everywhere, countless strange birds sing in harmony, and ghosts and gods live in it.Therefore, the mountain is higher than all the mountains, so it is called the king of the mountain.

The Buddha asked Subhuti again: "What do you think? Did the Tathagata obtain any magic method to become a Buddha before Randi Buddha?"

Subhuti replied: "No, World Honored One. The Tathagata has never obtained any wonderful teachings in front of Lantern Buddha in the past."

The Buddha then asked: "Subhuti, what do you think? Do bodhisattvas have a solemn and pure Buddhaland?"

Subhuti replied: "No, World Honored One. Why? Because the so-called adornment of the Buddhaland is not the adornment that exists in the ultimate meaning, but the appearance of adornment."

The Buddha said: "Therefore, Subhuti, all great Bodhisattvas should have a pure heart like this, and should not be attached to the various forms and dharmas seen by the eyes, and should not be attached to sounds, smells, tastes, touches, etc. To generate an attachment, one should develop a pure mind free from all attachments without any attachments. Subhuti, for example, if there is a person whose body is as tall as Mount Sumeru, what do you think? Is his body very tall?"

Subhuti replied, "It's very big, World Honored One. Why? The Buddha didn't talk about the real body. He just called it the great body under the guise of a name."

"Subhuti, if there are as many sands in the Ganges River as there are sands in the Ganges River, what do you mean? Is there a lot of sand in the Ganges Rivers?"

Subhuti said: "There are many, World Honored One. But there are countless Ganges Rivers, not to mention their sand!"

"Subhuti, I tell you the truth now: If there are good men and good women who fill all three thousand worlds with the seven treasures in the Ganges sands and use them as alms, will they receive many blessings?"

Subhuti said, "Many, World Honored One."
