A Dragons Favor

"Micah. Micah!" I shook him awake.

"Mmm? No a little bit longer." He wrapped his arms tighter around me.

"We have a problem." I sighed, I wished we could have slept longer.

"What sort of problem?" He said groggily rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Propping himself up on his elbow he finally caught sight of the hatchling.

"Oh...that sort of problem." He reached out a finger and scratched under the hatchlings chin recieving a purr in return.

"What are we going to do? I didn't know it was so close to hatching "

"Well they only hatch when exposed to extreme heat...I wonder if the egg got too close to the fire for too long.."

"Well now we have a baby dragon on our hands!"

We started searching the cavern for the remnants of the egg, finding large shards we discovered a large red line on the inner part of the shell.

"Look! Maybe if we can match it up to the map it'll lead to where we need to go!" I exclaimed holding up a large portion of shell.

"It's worth a shot." Micah gathered the rest of the shell pieces as I pulled out the map. As we started piecing the shell together I heard a small rumble. Looking at the source of the sound we discovered the baby dragon looking at its stomach.

"I guess its hungry." I said as I rummaged through my bag, I had some smoked salmon in here it may not be fresh meat but its something. Placing it in front of the dragon I turned back to help Micah work on our egg puzzle.

"Ok, I got it all together, How are we going to mark where the line is?" He asked me

"Umm maybe some charred sticks from last nights fire would work? " I grabbed a couple sticks to draw out the path.

Once we got it drawn out I realized where we were headed, Devils peak. The most dangerous mountain range in our country, the horses wouldn't be able to travel it so we'd have to pack light and go on foot.

"Maybe we should stop by your house again and repack, theres no way the sleigh will make it."

"We should wait for spring, it's only a couple weeks away. "

"You're right. That would give us time to make appropriate plans too. "

"Ok home it is...mom sure is in for a shock."

Micah packed what we had in the cavern and I settled the hatchling into my satchel with its salmon. We both climbed our way up carefully and greeted the horses. Ash and Silvermane sniffed curiously at the satchel, the baby dragon poked its head out and startled them. I let out a laugh it would take some getting use to having this dragon with us, hard to believe soon it would a massive dragon.

"Are you ready?" I asked the little dragon staring into its bright purple eyes. It let out a little squawk in response.

"I'll take that as a yes." I chuckled and I scratched its chin. Walking up to Micah I placed my hand on his arm,

"We're ready when you are. "

"Alright, let's go home." He smiled warmly at me causing my heart to race .
