A Dragons Favor

Chapter 26:false hate

We arrived at the cabin on a sunny day, the ice was melting rapidly. Water dripped off the bare trees, pools of freshly melted snow scattered the fields. Norma and Jon were outside preparing the land for crops to be planted in a few weeks. Anthony seeing us coming out of the forest gave a happy shout and ran to us, more excited to see the horses than us. Norma beamed a huge smile at us, unaware of the sleeping dragon I clutched to my abdomen.

"You're back!" Norma said happily, Micah and I exchanged nervous looks.

"What's wrong?" Norma cocked an eyebrow at us.

"Erm...let's go inside and talk." I stated guiding her toward the cabin.

Once inside we sat everyone at the table,

"Prepare yourselves " Micah stated as I pulled the groggy dragon from my satchel.

A loud gasp filled the room startling the dragon, it clambered up my arm and hid in my thick hair, peeking out to inspect it's new surroundings.

"So a lot has happened." I started, explaining what took place in the cabin Normas mouth dropped in shock.

"This complicates things." She said a look of worry passing over her face.

"How so?" I had got the dragon out of my hair and was cradling it.

"Well, our job is to deliver and care for the eggs. No one from our families has ever cared for a hatchling! They bond fast to the first creature they see, it's called imprinting. I fear even if you do manage to take it to the dragons nest it won't want to leave you. "

Micah and I looked at each other, this really does complicate things.

"What are we going to do?" My eyebrows knit together in worry.

"Well first stop doing that! You'll get premature wrinkles on your pretty face." Norma scolded me as I blushed.

"Next I think you should go to devil's peak, with any luck you can get the dragon to go with it's own kind."

"What if it doesn't?"

"Well my dear, if it doesn't it looks like you may be it's new mother."

"Mother?!"

"Well, generally golden dragons are alone when they hatch so they don't imprint on anything. But this one is definitely different. It may refuse to leave your side. It's your responsibility now, I'm sorry dear."

"Would I have to stay at devil's peak then?" Tears started welling in my eyes.

"Quite possibly."

"You won't be alone, where you go I go." Micah comforted me.

"No. That's not fair to you, you deserve happiness with someone who can make you happy. I'm doing this alone " I resolved, "Excuse me." I quietly left the cabin before anyone could protest, I needed air.

As much as I wanted to stay with Micah it would be unfair of me to expect him to throw his life away and help raise a dragon. I loved Micah but he would never know, he can't otherwise he would Insist.
