After speaking, Shu Nian didn’t stay to see what his reaction was. She just lowered her head and walked around him towards the cash register. Although she was exasperated, her mood wasn’t too affected.

She could no longer hear him following her anymore.

After walking for a while.

Shu Nian suddenly thought of Xie Ruhe’s legs and stopped. She tightened the grip of her hands before letting go. She felt that this kind of thinking was very bad. She was obviously still angry at his weird behaviour but when she thought of his——

Shu Nian came up to him. She picked up the candy first and handed it to him.

Xie Ruhe lifted his eyelid. He looked at her and then silently took it.

Shu Nian stood upright but she was not much taller than him, who sitting in a wheelchair. She lowered her head and apologised first before doing anything else: “I’m sorry, I was just talking nonsense.”

Xie Ruhe no longer kept silent and unlike his youthful voice from the past, his voice now was hoarse and slightly heavy.

“What?”

Shu Nian didn’t look at him but pointed to the bag of sanitary napkins in his hands and whispered. “I don’t think you would use that.”

Xie Ruhe: “…”

Shu Nian was still standing in front of him, looking dejected. She no longer spoke but she also didn’t move. It was as if she didn’t get his forgiveness then she wouldn’t leave.

Xie Ruhe didn’t stand in a deadlock with her: “I know.”

The expression on Shu Nian’s face obviously gradually relaxed and she looked at him again: “Do you still need to buy anything?”

Xie Ruhe said lightly. “No.”

Shu Nian thought about it and suggested: “Then let’s pay together?”

Xie Ruhe paused and nodded.

The two went to line up in one of the queues at the cashier registers and stood one in front of the other.

They were not talkative people. Shu Nian didn’t talk to him again and Xie Ruhe didn’t take the initiative to speak. The two maintain a kind of awkwardness like those of real strangers.

Shu Nian stood in front of him and never looked back at him. She paid first and then stood aside to wait for him.

Noticing that the cashier had picked up the bag of sanitary napkins and was ready to scan the bar code. Shu Nian suddenly reacted and helped him say to the cashier: “Hello, he doesn’t want this.”

The cashier’s actions came to a pause and they looked at Xie Ruhe: “You don’t want it?”

Xie Ruhe hesitated and said: “I want it.”

“…”

“What are you buying it for?” Shu Nian turned her head and looked at him with a puzzled expression. “Are you really going to buy it?”

Xie Ruhe avoided her sight and unnaturally hummed.

After he took the bag from the cashier, the two walked in the direction of the escalator. Shu Nian still felt a little strange but she soon figured it out. “Oh, are you buying it for your girlfriend?”

Hearing this, the hand that Xie Rihe was using to move the wheelchair froze and he stopped where he was.

Seeing that from the corner of her vision, she looked back and asked: “What’s wrong?”

Xie Ruhe’s eyes hung down as if he was thinking deeply about something. There was no movement for a long time. Then, he suddenly picked up the bag in his arms and handed it to her: “Here you are.”

Shu Nian: “You’re giving this to me?”

Xie Ruhe nodded and repeated: “Here you are.”

“Why are you giving it to me?” Shu Nian was at a loss but noting that the bag was transparent, he seemed embarrassed to hold it so she had to say. “I’ll take this out then.”

In addition to the bag of sanitary towels, there were also five packs of mango flavoured gummy.

Xie Ruhe shook his head: “Here you are.”

Before when she was familiar with Xie Ruhe, she never could understand his behaviour but now after so many years apart, they have become estranged and she was even more puzzled by his actions.

Shu Nin didn’t think about it anymore and followed him. She asked: “How are you going back?”

Xie Ruhe did not answer her, instead he asked: “How will you return?”

“I’m taking the subway.”

“Okay.”

That wasn’t a reply to her question. Shu Nian glanced at him but didn’t ask again.

Instead, Xie Ruhe saw that her hands were full. After a moment of silence, he took the initiative to say: “I’ll help you carry them.”

Shu Nian shook her head: “No need.”
