Upon hearing this, Ni Guanghai, the director of the technology research and development department, raised two fingers and said:
"Yes, the first solution is for us to abandon the 4.7-inch IPS capacitive screen and instead purchase the mature 3.5-inch IPS capacitive screen already available on the market.
This 3.5-inch IPS capacitive screen has been used in iPhones for more than a year, and it is the best choice in terms of both quality stability and price.
However, the problem is that our phone's SOC and its external structure all need to be redesigned from scratch, which will take us at least four months to complete.
The second solution is for us to develop our own 4.7-inch IPS capacitive screen and then find a screen manufacturer to produce it for us through OEM.
We also have certain advantages in this regard.
Because the mobile phone chip research and development team we established earlier had battery control chips and screen display chips as their research projects.
Currently, our screen display chip research and development progress has reached 80%. Give us another month, and we can formally tape out, and then after confirming that there are no problems, we can officially start mass production.
But the problem is that even if the screen display chip is developed, it does not mean that a 4.7-inch IPS screen can be born.
Because we still need to find a way to bypass LG's capacitive screen multi-touch technology patent, and we also need to solve many production and manufacturing problems of the 4.7-inch IPS capacitive screen."
Hearing the series of problems raised by Ni Guanghai, everyone at the scene felt a headache coming on.
They hadn't expected that a small mobile phone screen would have so many hidden complexities, which was truly a headache.
Moreover, currently, their mobile phone accessories are basically other people's mobile phone accessories. Simply put, apart from the system,
the CPU, GPU, baseband chip, etc., are all from other companies.
If they really wanted to achieve fully independent research and development of mobile phone accessories, the money and effort required would be terrifying.
"Gao Nian, what do you think we should do?"
Lei Bu Si asked Gao Nian.
In essence, Lei Bu Si actually wanted to give up self-developing the 4.7-inch IPS capacitive screen and instead use the same 3.5-inch IPS capacitive screen as the iPhone.
After all, Lei Bu Si believed that things should not be rushed, but should be done slowly. This can be seen from the fact that it took him two years to establish Xiaomi.
However, at this time, the boss of Geek Technology Company was, after all, Gao Nian. Under such circumstances, Lei Bu Si felt that he should consider Gao Nian's opinion.
Gao Nian did not answer, but seemed to be lost in thought, deeply pondering the question. Then, when people were getting a little impatient, he said:
"I think we should develop the 4.7-inch IPS screen!"
Looking at the strange gazes cast by the crowd, Gao Nian explained his reasons.
"In terms of mobile phone chips, there are three core chips: CPU chip, GPU chip, and baseband chip. We are still somewhat incapable of developing these chips at the moment.
However, the mobile phone screen is a better entry point. There are many manufacturers that can make mobile phone screens, but currently, there are no manufacturers that can make 4-inch or larger IPS capacitive screens.
Once our research and development of the designated standard 4.7-inch IPS screen is completed, it will definitely quickly become the mainstream standard.
At that time, even if we don't sell mobile phones, we can make a lot of money just by selling 4.7-inch IPS screens and display chips."
Hearing Gao Nian's words, Li Jun, who was in charge of the Geek Software Department, said worriedly:
"But who should we cooperate with to develop the 4.7-inch IPS capacitive screen?
If we want to develop a 4.7-inch IPS capacitive screen, we need to find a liquid crystal panel manufacturer for in-depth cooperation, right?"
"We can directly cooperate with Jingdongfang in Beijing. This can also be regarded as contributing to the country and indirectly solving the problem of 'lack of cores and screens'."
Gao Nian announced his decision.
Speaking of which, this Jingdongfang is really not a simple enterprise. Its strength lies in its proficiency in market business rules and its fondness for financing and burning money for development.
In 2003, they took out a loan to purchase the LCD division of Korea's Hyundai Corporation, swallowing their LCD division and personnel in one go.
They officially acquired the technical research and development personnel, technology patents, technology patent licenses, and a 5th generation LCD panel production line owned by Korea's Hyundai Corporation's LCD division.
After that, they began to invest in the construction of China's first 5th generation LCD panel production line with independent intellectual property rights, and finally officially mass-produced it in 2005.
This allowed China to have its first 5th generation LCD panel production line with independent intellectual property rights, successfully solving the problem of domestically producing 32-inch and smaller LCD screens.
Among them, Jingdongfang also carried out a bold operation this year, officially starting their road to rise.
This bold operation was that they didn't have the money to build a liquid crystal screen production line, but other people did.
So they began to contact local governments, wanting to use the local governments' money to build their own liquid crystal screen production lines.
In the end, they really succeeded. At the beginning of this year, they reached a cooperation with Rongcheng and invested in the construction of China's first domestic 4.5 generation liquid crystal panel production line.
Several months later, they cooperated with Hefei again and officially invested in the construction of China's first domestic 6th generation liquid crystal panel production line.
After this, Jingdongfang, relying on its own already mass-produced 5th generation liquid crystal panel production line,
plus the newly built 4.5 generation liquid crystal panel production line and 6th generation liquid crystal panel production line, will be able to have three LCD liquid crystal production lines in the future!
From then on, China can produce everything from small mobile phone screens to the largest 37-inch LCD screens.
Of course, mass production of all three production lines is a matter for the future.
The 6th generation liquid crystal panel production line, which can produce LCD screens up to 37 inches, will not be officially mass-produced until 2010, two years later.
Currently, they only have one 5th generation liquid crystal panel production line.
It is worth mentioning that Jingdongfang's LCD screen production line technology is not simply introducing other people's technology.
Instead, it has thoroughly understood the liquid crystal panel production technology of Korea's Hyundai Corporation, and finally independently developed the domestic 4.5 generation liquid crystal panel production line and 6th generation liquid crystal panel production line.
Therefore, it took them a full two years to complete the research and development and digest the relevant technology. The time to build the other two production lines is indeed relatively slow.
However, the most difficult problem is solving the problem of having something from nothing. Once you master the relevant technology and have qualified workers,
then building the exact same production line is simple, and it doesn't take two years at all.
Therefore, in the previous life, China was able to solve the 'screen shortage' problem in the 'lack of cores and screens' issue because Jingdongfang mastered the complete set of LCD liquid crystal screen production technology.
After that, liquid crystal screen giants such as Samsung, Sharp, AUO, and LG finally couldn't stand it and came to China to build large-scale liquid crystal screen production factories.
So, after several years, with the crazy investment and construction of domestic and foreign liquid crystal screen manufacturers, around 2015,
China finally solved the 'screen shortage' problem in the 'lack of cores and screens' issue, and transformed from a major importer of liquid crystal screens into a major exporter of liquid crystal screens!
Among them, Jingdongfang is naturally the biggest contributor. Without Jingdongfang, it is really impossible to guarantee whether China in the previous life could have become a major exporter of liquid crystal screens.
