Hakai no Miko
Episode 13: Peasants (Previous)
The season, let's move.
When the harsh winter that had been sitting for a long time finally raised its heavy hips, a short spring rushed through to chase it, and how long it was about to have a burning summer.
In the meantime, every day was a series of trials and errors for Ethereal Horses, who launched various reforms, including the Norfolk farming method. For the Ethereal Horse, who is neither an expert nor merely a listening knowledge, it was also a day of ordeal equal to proceeding by hand through the dark darkness.
But the re-invasion of the most vigilant Holmeer country, without any sign of it and without any major fail in pioneering or technological innovation, has brought nothing but luck to this point. That is so much so that the Ethereal Horse himself was aware that he made him say, "I may have exhausted my luck in life here".
Of course, it wasn't like there was anything at all.
Among the fae who followed Zoan and the inhabitants of the city, the certainty of humans and those who were slaves, and even the Ethnic Conflict due to differences in customs and language, there were no cuts if we counted the small moments.
However, none of them were taken care of because the faces representing the various races such as Garam and Zug, Dvarin, Jahangil and Eladia supported the Ethereal Horse with strength.
By virtue of this, if questioned as the most mind-wrenching disturbance, Aoima would have raised herself to the whispering rebellion of Gushemr, who said, "You under the umbilical."
"Hey, Shemr. Did you make him thin?
That was one day when I also began to hear the footsteps of spring. Originally there was no such thing as wasted luxury, a tight Shemr limb, but the Ethereal Horse, who felt like he had recently been idle, asked casually.
Then, when Shemr makes an obviously murky look, he answers stubbornly.
"I just changed my hair."
Apparently, Zoan also had a change in the growth of winter and summer hair.
That was the end of the conversation then, but then for a while, Shemr's attitude was cold. The meal of the Ethereal Horse is always made by Shemru, but the amount of the meal was small or the number of items was reduced by one.
To the Ethereal Horse, who asked it terribly, Shemr said this in a sinister tone.
"If you eat too much, you get fat."
It is a return of obvious interest.
Later, spilling stupidity on it, I was bewitched by Klaga Bunuka Shr, Zug's niece, who happened to hear it.
"Master Shemru was careful not to embarrass Lord Soma," you under the umbilical cord, "even though he was deliberately hairy every morning..."
The Ethereal Horse just had to shrink.
"Pointing out hair changes to a woman is like stepping on the tail of a bobcat."
Laughing at Niyaniya, it was Zug who taught me so. Apparently, asking Zoan's woman about her hair changes hits a lot of rudeness.
After Zoog walked away, he reflected deeply that Shemru had cared for himself for a long time, even though there were still clumps of fallen hair there (heaps).
From then on, I tried to say "thank you" every time I had a "yummy" or something to try to get Shemr in a good mood, but instead Shemr, who became more grumpy, told me "don't bother," and the Ethereal Horse fell apart.
The one person whom the troubled Ethereal Horse has brought in for consultation on how he can fix Shemr's mood is Gallum.
Gallum, who heard the story, put his hand on his forehead as he had had even had a headache, sighed heavily, and then told the Ethereal Horse.
"Say 'I'm counting on you'. That's all I need."
He was a half-hearted Ethereal Horse wondering if such words were all he needed, not praise or gratitude, but that's Shemr's brother. As soon as the words were spoken, it was a surprise that Shemr cared for the colors.
Anyway, as much as I had my head troubled by this extent, the city of Bornis was generally a good time to say it was peaceful.
"I wish nothing was going on all this time..."
Originally, the Ethereal Horse himself hates fighting. From its inception, it was thus decided to fight the Holmeer Country, but if the opponent doesn't come any further, I'm not going to bother to attack him from here.
If it can be done, it is the untrue authenticity of the Ethereal Horse to say that it is good that this tranquillity will last forever.
But behind that, which I thought was peaceful, the Ethereal Horse had not noticed that a new spark was secretly dull.
◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆
"No more patience!
The voice rose in a pioneering village that is experimentally introducing Norfolk farming methods. It is the bloodiest (frightened) man in the village who, at night, complains of exaggerated hand gestures in the village chief's house where the villagers who have finished farming have been gathered.
"I've never messed with the dirt. I can't stand a bastard saying it our way because he's a lord! - Right, guys?!"
Besides, one voice after another rose from among the villagers in tune.
In many comic books and light novels, the introduction of the Norfolk farming method can easily yield significant results, and farmers are greeted with cheer and well seen to expand.
However, no matter how many revolutionary reforms have been made in real agriculture, it takes time on an annual basis, no matter how quickly the results are achieved. It's almost all morning and night, and that's not what we're going to see.
Norfolk farming, introduced by Ethereal Horse in the belief that it will greatly develop agriculture in this world, is also only a sinister way of denying the farming methods that have been built over time by their fathers until farmers can feel the fruits. And it was also natural to remember intense anger at the pale horses pushing it.
But the grievances of the peasants go beyond that.
"Do it. Dig up the soil in the field, do it. Mix something weird with that soil, do it. Mow the grass and pack it in a weird tower, do it. Collect the cows' manure (damn) and mix it with the grass. - But even if we move to a new land, and we're all in trouble, then we don't even have time to rest!
Aoima introduced a variety of techniques and farming methods to enrich the lives of peasants at all. At the same time, however, it also meant that farmers had a new labor that they had never done before. Such unfamiliar labor was additionally causing dissatisfaction among the farmers.
"Besides, that lord bastard says make less wheat! This is it. There's no such thing as stupid talk! I don't know how many people starve to death in the village this winter!
Until now, cereals have been grown on all agricultural land, whereas the Norfolk farming method involves quadripartitioning agricultural land, each of which has to grow a different crop, so that the area in which cereals can be made is really small. Farmers feared that this staple food, the reduction of cereal production, would starve during the winter months.
"Gentlemen, if I defy your lord, what will I do..."
The air on the spot turns bitterly into the spilled words of a villager who knows no one.
With all sorts of dissatisfaction, frightened by the anxiety of starving and dying, the peasants have nevertheless followed the reform of the Ethereal Horse because for them the Ethereal Horse was the ruler in charge of the right to life and death.
Of course, the Ethereal Horse is not going to be such a ruler. All that or more times before, when I took myself to the pioneering village, I asked if I was dissatisfied with the status quo, and if I had any trouble, I did not hesitate to rely on it, and I was committed to reconciling myself with the peasants.
But the image shaped by the wind that followed Zoan, who was a natural enemy to the pioneers, and shook the officials up saying that in the city they would snap their necks if they defied him, was not so easily stuffed.
If you defy the new lord, they will kill you all.
It is only then that the peasants endured without exasperating discontent, even if they were pushed to farm their way, even if they were forced to labor harshly, even if half of the villages starved to death.
But even that patience popped up.
"Can you stand hearing this?! I hear you're feeding us the cow shit we collect!
Besides, the men turn bright red in humiliation and anger, and the women and children scream.
No abusive lords or outrageous officials have ever done such imitations. Exactly, it doesn't think of peasants as people, nothing more than evil places to work.
The peasants, who had so desperately endured so far, had finally reached the limit of their patience in this.
But that was a misunderstanding.
What Ethereal Horse was trying to do was introduce fertilizer.
In the Norfolk farming method, which does not restore local power by setting up or relocating fallow land as before, the lost portion of local power must be compensated in the form of fertilizer from the outside.
And what Ethereal Horse was trying to use as its fertilizer was massive manure based compost.
Of course, for the peasants of this world, the Ethereal Horse knew that the compost was unknown.
They had made an effort to gather village chiefs from pioneering villages in advance to explain how much compost could help them grow crops and get them accepted.
But neither did the Ethereal Horse imagine that the farmers understood the concept of fertilizers to nourish plants.
Already the farmers of this world knew by rule of thumb that repeated crop cultivation on the same land would gradually lose local power and make crops poorly made.
But it is as if the land were an organism, one that has been exhausted and powerless to grow plants, and it was not by any means due to the depletion of the nutrients needed for the growth of plants that we thought or saw.
Of course, some people were noticing plants growing big around animal manure that fell to the ground. Originally, the idea of fertilizing farmland with animal manure as fertilizer was supposed to arise from it, but in this continent of Cerdeas it was inhibited for a reason.
The man dyed his face red in anger and raised his voice aloud.
"Don't be ridiculous! So, you guys are genobandas!
It inhibited the idea of fertilization because of the legend of Genovanda, long passed down throughout the continent of Cerdeas.
Genovanda is a man who bought the wrath of all the seven pillars gods in the age of mythology and was transformed into an ugly monster before being dropped into a marsh of manure at the bottom of the earth. He still says he begs the gods for mercy while fishing for manure at the bottom of the earth.
So much so that in the Continent of Cerdeas, calling the opponent Genovanda is also the greatest disdain common to the seven races, it was a widely known legend on the continent.
In ancient times of low hygiene, genobanda legend, also said to have spread to prevent plagues and other diseases that spread from faeces, but this had forced people on the continent to strengthen their aversion to faeces, closing the way to the use of animal faeces as fertilizers.
When the Ethereal Horse tried to introduce compost, there were still voices of concern from his companions about using cow manure.
But no matter how much I hear and understand from them, the Ethereal Horse is Gentile at best. There is an abyss septum between what is taught as knowledge by others and what has been cultivated as common sense since the birth of people in this world.
To observe it, the Ethereal Horse was young and lacked life experience.
The pals of the Ethereal Horse were also full of neglected (trying) Fae and soldiers in agriculture, partly because they could not strongly disagree with the Ethereal Horse's claim that fertilizer power was essential to do Norfolk farming.
Thus the discrepancy between the Ethereal Horse and the pioneering people spread from time to time, and finally became a great crack.
The grievances and anger of the peasants were no longer at their limit.
As it was, it was the chief of the village who took the farm tools and decided on them even now.
"Wait, everyone! Don't panic!
"Ladies and gentlemen, Master Murakami. No more patience for you guys!
To that voice, most villagers said, "That's it! That's it!" raises the voice of consent. But the village chief said with his voice up against such villagers.
"Fine! Oh, think about it. If it's a rebellion, you're not allowed to fail. You guys have no choice but to die. Guys, if you fail, you'll kill all the girls and children! Still eh?!"
Many villagers silenced the words.
But voices rise from the young who are not convinced to be forced to endure as they are.
"Master Murakami, can you still put up with this?
Besides, the village chief shook his head wide and sideways.
"Yeah. I mean, the limit of patience. Gentlemen, even if we rebel without thinking, we don't just get killed."
"So the village chief isn't all around anyway?
In response to the villagers' inquiry, the village chief answered confidently.
"We don't do it alone. If we're gonna do this, we're gonna get 'em."
"Buddy up?
The village chief nodded loudly.
"Bye! The other villages, of course, but the most important thing was to keep the soldiers company!
"Mr. Soldier? You guys, the Holmeer soldiers lost and ran far away."
Towards the bewildered villagers, the village chief had a meaningful grin, as he told the secret he kept.
"Oh, think about it! There are soldiers everywhere near here!
For a while the villagers leaned their necks and thought. One of them whispers "Ah" in a low voice.
"Oh no! You're a prisoner, soldiers!
"Bye! I'm a prisoner now, but the soldier is a soldier. I know how to fight better than we do! Let the soldiers be one of us!
The villagers stood excited about the village chief's proposal.
"If the soldiers will join us, we will win!
"I can't keep up with my new lord anymore!
"That's it, that's it! Rebellion! Start a rebellion!
Thus, among the pioneering people of the Sorbiant plains, the rebellious enterprise (Kuwawa) was carried on in secret.
For whatever reason, we did the young people to a nearby pioneering village and kept in touch with each other. And instead of all the iron farm tools lent by the Ethereal Horse to the weapon, he picked up swords, spears and other things from the battlefield trail. And he hid it from the houses of the pioneering villages, and began steadily to prepare for rebellion.
The plot was supposed to be a fatal blow to Ethereal Horse, who had not yet mastered the hearts and minds of the pioneering people of the plains, and to develop into a massive insurgency involving not only pioneering villages that had been experimenting with Norfolk farming methods, but all the pioneering villages of the plains.
But the revolt is on the verge of a decision, stopped by the unexpected, and ends in an attempt.
◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆
On that day, he had secretly invited the captive men to the village from their residence near the pioneering village.
You don't think there's any risk of escape in the middle of such a plain, the number of soldiers and Zoans watching the prisoners in their places of residence was low, and the security was also sweet. For this reason, prisoners who became close in daytime pioneering work were often thus invited to dine in villages.
But this time it's not all about friendship.
It is an invitation to select the men who are serving as summaries for the prisoners in order to get them to cooperate in the rebellion.
For starters, while still allowing the young widows to exaggerate and get in the mood of the men, the village chief turned instead to the water, drawing the discontent of daily pioneering work and treatment from the men.
When the mayor of the village, who had thus heard from the mouths of the men the difficulty of wanting and opening, decided that this could be done, he finally brought up the story of the rebellion and pleaded for it to be joined.
This sudden offer blew the drunkenness out of the men's faces.
Sure, there was dissatisfaction with the present situation, but still the men did not answer instantly and looked at each other.
The mayor of the village, who thought he could take it on in two replies, sweats cold on his spine at the figure of the men confused to see.
After a while, a man opened his mouth saying Doug, who is seen as his brother among the prisoners.
"I understand the story. But that lord isn't that bad of a guy either. Why don't we see how it goes for a while?
It was soldiers of the Holmeer National Army who had been forced to engage in the Sorbiant plains exploitation that stopped the peasants from rebelling.
