Hakai no Miko

Episode 12 Pioneering (later)

What the Ethereal Horse brought to the land of Bornis was not just new farming methods and tools.

At this time, there have been significant changes even in rural forms and social systems.

At that time, the pioneering village in the Sorbiant Plains was the majority of what should be called a settlement where only a few families with blood ties gathered.

The Norfolk farming method, originally introduced by Ethereal Horse, integrates and abolishes communal land, which was the shared property of several farmer-owned farmlands and villages, making it a single vast farmland "enclosure".

However, knowledge of the Norfolk farming methods of the Ethereal Horse was examined on the Internet with interest from Light Novell and from there, and they lacked knowledge of the "enclosure" part because of the emphasis they placed on crops and their way of rotation. In addition, in the Sorbiant plains, where vast wilderness remains, a large enough agricultural area could be secured without enclosing it, and Aoima did not have the perception to say that it would "enclose" the agricultural land.

But then the development in the Norfolk farming method and enclosure of large-scale agricultural management, in which landlords with vast areas of agricultural land say they will employ agricultural workers who have lost their agricultural land for money, could not have taken place in this world.

Yet, from a different point of view, the Ethereal Horse will push for large-scale agriculture.

That was the difference between Japanese and European and American forms of agriculture, as we saw in modern Japanese news.

Japan is responsible for agriculture because farmers - that is, the personal management of the family unit - whereas Europe and the United States are large-scale agricultural operations that put large quantities of machinery and workers into vast areas of agricultural land, so Japan is not a very good enemy (I guess) in terms of yields and prices.

Knowing that, it is only natural that the Ethereal Horse, which was intended to increase food production, went for large-scale farming.

In the process it was the settlement's "enclosure", not the "enclosure" of the farmland of the Norfolk method.

That is to say that villages with integrated settlements are to be used as a single unit, that a single farmland is to be cultivated jointly and that the harvests obtained from it are to be distributed equally.

This led to the stabilisation of tax revenues, as all villagers would be jointly and severally liable for taxes, as in the Edo-era five-person system, since taxes would also be collected collectively from the entire village. In addition, the ability to collect taxes from villages in bulk eliminated the hassle of patrolling individual settlements, as before, and reduced the burden on the treasurers.

However, there was a risk that each person's willingness to work would be reduced if the harvest were to be distributed equally throughout the village.

But the Ethereal Horse, who had once learned in social classes the past of saying that the willingness to work had been lost from people as a result of an attempt to distribute wealth equally to everyone regardless of the person's work in a socialist country, had also considered his readiness for it.

That is the introduction of a constant exemption method.

The statutory exemption method is one of the annual contribution collection laws that has been carried out during the Edo period, which determines the annual contribution to be paid in that year from the average of the harvests in the last five to ten years of that year. For this reason, we can impose a fixed tax regardless of how much we were able to harvest in that year, so there is no way that we are unmotivated because the more harvest we have, the more we get the farmers' share.

However, if it became abundant, the peasants would get more money for it, but there were shortcomings that, when it was a murder, it would be heavily taxed on the contrary.

However, the Ethereal Horse, which was expected to increase its harvest with each passing year due to the introduction of the Norfolk farming method, stood in the way of the introduction of this statutory exemption in order to increase the willingness of farmers to work.

Of course, when it became a murder, the disadvantages of being heavily taxed were also learned and understood by Ethereal Horses in history classes. So when introducing the statutory exemption, the Ethereal Horse had promised a significant tax cut at the time of the murder. Most importantly, this is something neither Aoima learned in school classes, but it doesn't mean that Aoima was creative, as the statutory exemptions actually implemented during the Edo period were also allowed to be broken (significant tax breaks) during the murders.

However, the introduction of this statutory exemption had an effect that the Ethereal Horse had not expected.

It is a further tax increase and stabilisation.

In the Serdeas continent at the time, taxpayers and lords patrolled the post-harvest villages, taking the method of a patrol tax that made them pay about 10% to 50% of that year's harvest. In this circuit, the imposition of bribes and entertainment was frequent and a huge burden for the peasants, as the taxes to be collected were determined by the three inches in the chest of the tax collectors and the lords.

One of the most notorious of these was the tax contractor.

The patrol levy had to take months to patrol the villages and was a burden for the kings and lords alike. So instead of making a roundabout tax, he also sold his tax collection rights and forced others to take the tax.

And it was the tax contractor who bought that right to tax and actually collected it from the peasants on behalf of the king or lord.

For them tax contractors to make money, they have to collect more tax than the amount they bought out the right to collect. For this reason, the tax collectors took it from the peasants by imposing much heavier taxes than those laid down. Moreover, many of the tax collectors were gold lenders, who even imitated that they were forced to lend money at high interest to farmers who couldn't pay their taxes and would take their wives and daughters away to Kata in debt if payment was delayed. Now it would also be natural for the tax contractors to have been hated like genobanda by the peasants.

However, the introduction of a fixed exemption law by Ethereal Horse and the strict fixing of tax rates led farmers to safely pay taxes because such harsh taxes had just cast a shadow or the tax had become clear, which also led to higher incomes after tax revenues had stabilized.

Furthermore, it is not the only benefit from the statutory exemption method. In advance, it had the advantage of saying that the tax revenues for the year were determined, making it easier for the exchangers to organize their budgets for the year as well.

The introduction of these new farming methods and the reform of the system have sharply enriched the lives of farmers with each passing year.

In later years, however, historical researchers have criticized this series of agricultural and institutional reforms of the Ethereal Horse as "the Son of Destruction, whilst making equality, in fact created a difference between the rich and the poor among the peasants, creating the serfs".

Indeed, the large-scale farming promoted by Ethereal Horse created a relationship between landlords and smallholder farmers and even created serfs, who later said that leading villagers in the village owned the land and that the villagers would be hired with money. It is also an incontrovertible fact that the higher the harvest, the richer the portion remaining in the licence (under) was due to the flat rate of taxes under the statutory exemption method, which worked in favour of landlords with more agricultural land, creating a large difference between rich and poor with smallholder farmers without land.

But there were also small farmers at the time when the Ethereal Horse lived, but they were not necessarily serfs.

That was because countries and lords everywhere had restricted movement and tied it to their land in order to prevent the separation of peasants, whereas the Ethereal Horse country was the only country that had also allowed peasants the freedom to move their land. This allowed the smallholders to choose, of their own free will, the landlords who would offer better conditions without being tied to the land.

For this reason, landlords who needed a workforce along with rapid arable land expansion had to promise high salaries to ensure competent smallholder farming, not necessarily just in relation to the unilateral exploitation (sawdust) of smallholder farming by landlords.

All that or rather, the landlords seemed more distressed about securing smallholder farming.

This is also evident from the court records of the time, such as the mediation between the landlords, which began with the pull-out of competent smallholder farmers, and the petition by a coalition of landlords sent out to the country to fix the maximum wage for smallholder farmers by law.

Archaeologist Martin S. Ackerson says:

"Anyway, researchers tend to deny from their heads that it will be about the Son of Destruction from the lesson of 'Reaper' Otto Zydenbecher, who believed in the Son of Destruction. However, if we look at his performance by eliminating such preconceptions, we can see something commendable. What was found in the ancient city of Bornis, revealed by today's archaeology, is a much more progressive form of society, far from what we think of in ancient times. And it is no doubt nothing more than that brought about by the Son of Destruction, Soma Kisaki"

◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆

But not everything went as the Ethereal Horse wished.

"I'm sorry, Soma. No one's ever seen a plant like you."

The Ethereal Horse also sighed one more time at the words of Shemr, who dropped his shoulders softly, for not meeting his expectations.

"I wonder, after all, if there is no 'clover' in this world"

In the Norfolk farming method, barley, clover, wheat, and turnips were rotated in a field divided into four parts, so the Ethereal Horse asked Shemr to look for them. Wheat and barley had already been grown in this world, as well as root vegetables that were subtly different in shape but very similar to turnips.

But only Clover could be found.

In my opinion, this is a different world. It may be miraculous just to have the same plants as the original world such as wheat and wheat. But even so, it was hatred to the Ethereal Horse that Clover could not be found.

"Without clovers, whatever you use as pasture, there's a restoration of local power in the field..."

Clover helps restore local power because it symbiotizes a bacterium called Root Root Bacteria (Konryukin) in the roots.

When it comes to the three main nutrients of a plant, it is nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. And the most important and massive need of these is nitrogen. Nitrogen is an element that accounts for seventy-eight percent of the Earth's atmosphere, and it may be said that the amount is inexhaustible.

But plants cannot directly take up this inexhaustible nitrogen. For plants to take in, once the airborne nitrogen molecules are transformed into other nitrogen compounds - so-called nitrogen fixation is needed.

One thing I was doing in nature was thunder.

The energy of thunder discharge had turned nitrogen into nitrogen oxide, which had poured down to the earth with the rain to nourish the plants. Though lightning is called lightning more than in ancient times, this is the source of the story because when lightning strikes, the fruit of rice becomes better, so it is called "the husband of rice (Tsuma)" in the sense that lightning produces rice.

And the other thing that was doing nitrogen fixation in nature was the root bacteria symbiotic to the roots of some Mameceae plants.

"I wonder if I'll have to substitute it with other Mameidae plants"

Unfortunately, there's no other way. The Ethereal Horse thought about giving up Clover and replacing it with other Mameidae plants.

Fortunately, various edible beans also exist in this world. Some of them were very similar to solamame and leopard mackerel. It's hard to distinguish a plant like Clover that doesn't seed beans to see them, but if they're eaten as beans in this world, they can certainly be called the Mameceae.

Instead of Clover, the Ethereal Horse, who was haunting his head as to which one he cultivated, casually glanced at the cow in the enclosure. The cows finally became surrounded and the excitement subsided, and now they are relaxing and eating grass. In its pastoral sight, the Ethereal Horse often forgot his troubles and saw them.

He was a pale horse who watched the cows for a while, but his eyes caught on the plant where the nearest cow was eating (ha).

"... that?

For some reason, the Ethereal Horse was concerned about asexuality. Looking around and looking for the same plants, I quickly found them.

It is a withered grass as long as the waist of a pale horse. In the distance, the brown withered and round leaves seemed to hang in the bell, but what looked like leaves when viewed nearby was a sheath of broken, mouth-opening plants. Moving closer, in its open sheath, you can see round grains with about two grains of yellowbrown.

"Is this somewhere...?

The Ethereal Horse tilted his neck at the appearance of that plant that stimulated somewhere in his memory.

"Well, I thought I'd make some at home."

Unexpectedly, I thought of my grandfather, who wore a straw hat and was responsible for the wax.

The late Ethereal Horse grandfather was renting a small plot of land to do the field. The Ethereal Horse also did a good job helping his grandfather, but at that time I notice that the plant in front of me is very similar to what I saw.

…… No way, this?! "

Compared to what's in your memory, this way the sheath shouldn't crack and open with nature, and the seeds and small grains and the colors inside are bad. But when the Ethereal Horse takes the round seed out of his sheath, throws it into his mouth and bites it with his back teeth, the unique tannins and egumi that spread in his mouth overlap with when he eats something that is not sufficiently fire-through at the time of conservation.

"... Is this, possibly, soy?

I don't know if a very similar type of bean originally came from a turtle that was in this world, or if the seeds that fell from the other world like a pale horse were adapted and rooted for this one.

But it was definitely soy.

Calm down, calm down and the Ethereal Horse tells himself.

But I can't contain the excitement that springs from the back of my chest.

Indeed, soybeans are nutritious crops that contain proteins as abundant as they are also known as "meat in the field". Besides, it's not just edible. From the soybeans, the oil must have been squeezed out. And that squeeze cusp also becomes fertilizer for the field. Of course, livestock may be fed as feed. Anyway, there are as many uses as there are.

But that's trivial. For the Japanese, Ethereal Horse, soybeans have more value and meaning than that.

"What are you doing?

There, Shemr, who noticed the behaviour of the Ethereal Horse, called out. Shemru looks at the soybeans the Ethereal Horse is mouthing and slightly wrinkles her nose.

"- Are you hungry already? But don't do that. If you eat too much, you'll break your belly later."

Shemr also knew the soybeans that were native to the plains. However, the Zoans did not regard soybeans as edible because of their unique tannins and egumi, and because eating them in large quantities without passing through the fire well again would belly them.

"Hey, Shemru -"

Quiet, but for some reason Shemr has a bad feeling about the voice of an unusually temperamental Ethereal Horse.

"- Can you collect these beans as soon as possible?

"You want these beans?

To Shemr, who was just saying it was useless to collect such an inedible bean, Aoima turned a tremendous smile.

"Of course, you'll collect it, won't you?

For this reason, I am prepared not to resign myself to the authority of "you under the umbilical cord."

Shemr didn't snort.

◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆

Soybeans raised soldiers of the Son of Destruction.

These are the words of the famous archaeologist Martin S. Ackerson.

Beans are known to contain carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in a balanced manner, but among them soybeans contain the only plant protein comparable to meat, a crop also known as "meat in the field".

But at the time I had the Son of Destruction, the beans weren't eaten much. Especially since soybeans contained soybean saponins with unique tannins and egumi, even the Zoans who lived in the Sorbiant plains where soybeans were native did not regard them as edible.

But Soma Kisaki, the son of destruction, said he actively cultivated it, conveyed his own cooking methods, and tried to spread them.

It was also this processed soybean that was stockpiled alongside wheat, wheat, etc., as food for Soma's army, according to Michena's records, who was the lead treasurer at the time. There is no doubt that soybeans were an important food that supported the tough flesh of the soldiers of Soma Xaki.

There is also a record that Soma herself preferred soybeans.

If I can't drink this soy paste and melt the fermented soup for three days, I'm in a bad mood, so it would be quite something.

This fact has been studied among many historical researchers as the key to unraveling the background of Soma Xaki, son of previous destruction, who appears on the Sorbiant plains, still considered the greatest mystery in the history of the Continent of Cerdeas.

At that time, wheat was the most valuable grain, whereas beans were considered inferior food, the food of the poor and slaves. The theory that Soma Kisaki was a slave who had fled the country without him because he liked the beans is famous.

More recently, however, it is the way it is eaten that has come to our attention.

The only ingredients found in soybeans are those that are good for the body. Substances harmful to the human body, such as phytic acid, enzyme inhibitors and thyroid adenoma-inducing substances (goydrogens), which inhibit mineral absorption, are also included in soybeans, and it is not considered preferable to consume these harmful substances in large quantities.

However, there are ways to break down these harmful substances and process soybeans into ideal nutritious foods.

That's fermentation.

The way Soma Xaki spread the word and also liked to eat herself was precisely what made sense soybean processing.

However, it would have taken a huge pile of rules of thumb to create a method of fermentation that would have known if chemistry had developed in the modern era and noticed the toxicity of soybeans in ancient times and rendered them harmless. Soma Xaki, who knew that, at least on a hundred years' basis, can only be considered to be of ethnic origin who were close to him and used or consumed soybeans.

At the time, however, the dossier confirms a number of areas where soybeans were used as food, but no areas or ethnic groups have been found that say they were eating in a soma-like way, something that still does not leave the hypothetical domain.

Now, this soybean, but it is a proverb that Soma began to find and cultivate wild species that were now native to the Sorbiant plains. Until very recently, however, it has been believed that Soma Xaki created it in black magic. For this reason, some areas still repel soybeans as the food of the devil.

Even in modern times, the remnants can be seen in fairy tales.

"Hakano Miko Soma Kisaki tried to make food for the soldiers of Mano.

So Soma Kisaki put a terrible curse on the heyday.

"Miso, Shoyu, Touf, Natto! We can eat this!

Then, from the soil, the soybeans rose with gnocchi.

The meaning of the spell that Soma Xaki actually cast is still a mystery.
