Heartless

Chapter 39:Don't tell

I wasn't sure why I walked out of the classroom, but I saw an interesting scene when I did. A young looking girl, seemingly human, running as quickly as possible before flickering into her phantom form. She quickly headed upwards, a look of fear on her face.

The kikimora that everyone was trying to find, was disguised as a boy. With choppy black hair that covered her eyes and a young body, it would be very easy to look her over. The only reason I would know that she was a girl was because a male kikimora wouldn't be able to disappear like that.

A hand grabbed my wrist from behind me and I whipped my head to see who did it, before realizing that the only person who could've done it was August.

"Let her be," this was the first time I've ever seen him this serious, all traces of warmth gone.

"How long?"

"The second day I came here. It was an accident really, but she didn't do anything worthy of being turned in so I let it be."

"Why should I let her be?" Your decisions do not make mine, our mentalities are different and I live by the rules whereas you live by kindness.

"She ran away for a reason," he whispered.

"She reminds yourself of you, doesn't she?" I asked, seeing the lost look in his eyes. He gave nostalgic smile, "she reminds all of us of ourselves. Didn't we all run from something?"

"Very well." Just this once, because she does remind me of myself. But unlike myself, she was able to run away.

"So you do still have a bit of kindness left in you," a smile shone through his face as he said this, and I surprised myself by giving a small smile of my own.

"Maybe I still do."
