Heartless

Chapter 5:When the sun sets

I donned on a black shirt and leggings with a knee length lab coat. I headed for the kitchen, tying my silver hair along the way.

The 20th century truly made things convenient for us. With scientists proving that we don't exist and any physical abnormalities can be explained with artificial enhancements, take hair dye and eye contacts for example.

If someone were to have horns, the simple explanation is that their cosplaying or filming a movie. We often used filming a movie as an excuse. If asked where the cameras were, it was a simple explanation that they were practising their lines; getting a feel of their characters.

Though there were always those that wanted to prove us real. Although problematic, many are labeled eccentric and shunned by society. Adding to that, most likely didn't think of what they'll do once they realize that we were real.

My practiced hands had already finished making breakfast and like yesterday and everyday before that, it was a simple meal of eggs and bacon. I placed them on the table and set the table, taking a bacon for myself. Like yesterday, my father came in to the kitchen.

"Leaving for the bridge again?" he asked yet again, like every other day.

"Yes, father," I responded.

"Did you bring your phone?"

"Yes father."

"I suppose I'll see you tonight?"

"No father," I responded as I opened the door.

"Oh...is it a new job?"

"I suppose, father."

I left as he gave the little sigh I expected.

I spent the day at the the bridge yet again. However, my different apparel seemed to cause a bit of a disturbance. Even so, they didn't dare come close. Some took pictures, perhaps selfies even. The ghost of Deathwood Forest, as their captions would say. Ignoring them would be best, if I did anything else then their daring spirits would no doubt bloom.

Like this, time passed quickly and so I opened my black eyes to the setting sun and pulled out my phone. Only when the last rays of the sun disappeared and the slight breeze to pick up did I entered a specific series of numbers on an app.
