Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#105 - The new professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts is reborn
This cursed Defense Against the Dark Arts class ensures misfortune for every teacher who comes to instruct it. The misfortune accumulates with the passage of time. Forget teaching for over a year; even teaching for less than a year often results in the teacher being unable to continue.
Injury, kidnapping, death—
Dumbledore actually has quite a few preferred candidates, but none are willing to come.
After all, who would willingly invite a curse upon themselves for no reason? Wizards capable of teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts are unlikely to be ignorant of the terror of curses.
Especially considering Voldemort's influence, Quirrell's death last year has already been attributed to the curse.
With a recent death, even fewer people are willing to come.
“Actually, my original plan was to find Gilderoy Lockhart. He even agreed, but alas…”
Roger curled his lip slightly: “That fellow who steals other people's life experiences with the Memory Charm?”
“Yes, that's him.” Dumbledore wasn't surprised that Roger knew Gilderoy Lockhart's secrets. After all, he is Roger.
Gilderoy Lockhart's public persona in the British wizarding world is that of an adventurer who writes books about his experiences.
These books are very popular.
‘Breaking with a Banshee,’ ‘Gadding with Ghouls,’ ‘Holidaying with Hags,’ ‘Voyages with Vampires’—if the content of his books were true experiences, then as a 'practical' wizard, he would be fully qualified to teach.
But unfortunately, they are not. The content of his books consists of the experiences of other wizards. Lockhart learns the details through trickery, then uses the Memory Charm to erase the original owner's memory of the experiences, and uses them himself.
Dumbledore had read these books. Lockhart wrote them wonderfully, but for the sake of the books’ narrative excitement,
he sacrificed magical accuracy, which allowed Dumbledore to see flaws. After careful reading, he discovered that the content of the books was somewhat similar to the experiences of several of his old friends.
Dumbledore visited his friends and found that their memories had been modified, confirming that Gilderoy Lockhart was indeed a fraud.
So, on the one hand, the curse's reputation is too strong after a recent death, requiring a foolhardy person who isn't afraid of the curse. On the other hand, because of Harry and Roger's existence, the atmosphere in the school and even the British wizarding world is somewhat delicate.
Therefore, Dumbledore wants the students not to be overly obsessed with and believe in fame and legends, using Lockhart to demystify them.
At the same time, it's also sacrificing a Lockhart to stabilize social sentiment a bit.
But he didn't expect that Roger's appointment as an official in the Ministry of Magic some time ago would turn things around.
Humans have a kind of cognitive inertia: they like to impose their own perceptions on others.
Those who value profit from the bottom of their hearts do not believe that there is any selfless dedication in the world. Even if something happens, they think it's 'showing off' and that there must be ulterior motives behind it.
Naive people always say, “Don't always think of others so badly,” ignoring those who have been hurt.
Lockhart, as a liar, is the same.
A seer? A savior?
His reputation is indeed great, but after reading those newspapers that dare to say anything for sales, he feels that, like himself, there is a lot of exaggeration.
But as the saying goes, battle reports can deceive, but the battle lines cannot.
The content in the newspapers and the rumors in society can be achieved by boasting through public opinion.
But an 11-year-old official in charge of a department of the Ministry of Magic…
Not to mention seeing one, Lockhart had never even heard of one!
Now, looking at those 'legendary stories' in the newspapers, Lockhart is silent.
Co-authored? Mine are all made up, and yours are all real?
What's the point of playing this game? Run!
Realizing that his actions were likely to be exposed by the seer, Gilderoy Lockhart fled abroad to avoid disaster.
After explaining the reason for Lockhart's escape, Dumbledore continued, “So, I can only shamelessly ask some old friends to see if they can give me face and come to teach for a year.”
The old friend Dumbledore is talking about is certainly not Grindelwald. No matter how big his heart is, he cannot invite a seer who is good at bewitching people to educate the next generation of British wizards.
A year is enough for Grindelwald to plant too many hidden cards.
The friend he is talking about is another one.
“Nicolas Flamel?” Roger remembers Dumbledore telling him about this alchemist.
“Yes.” Dumbledore nodded.
Since the end of Voldemort's entry into Hogwarts, the Philosopher's Stone has been returned to its original owner by Roger, but Dumbledore did not immediately return the Philosopher's Stone to Nicolas Flamel.
Because not two days after the end of the Voldemort incident, it was Roger's event of achieving immortality.
Dumbledore came into contact with the Three-Dimensional Theory.
He realized that a magnificent era might arrive at any time, and at this time, the existence of a powerful wizard standing on the side of order might be crucial.
He cannot let Nicolas Flamel choose death like this and embark on another great adventure.
This world still needs Nicolas Flamel. An old wizard who has lived for 665 years, if he switches to the Three-Dimensional Law, his foundation will definitely make him unimaginably powerful.
When not knowing where the future will lead, having one more strong person on his side can provide more peace of mind. Therefore, only after Dumbledore possessed the Fire of Nirvana did he bring the Philosopher's Stone back to Nicolas Flamel's secluded home in Devon.
Because Roger temporarily did not plan to spread it to a scope beyond control, Dumbledore did not talk about the technical details, but he also talked about the possible future development direction of the world, persuading Nicolas Flamel to 'stay' for a while longer.
Nicolas Flamel said that he would consider it, and there should be results recently.
“That's really something to look forward to.” Roger said with interest. Regarding another successful person on the road to immortality, Roger is very interested in communicating and learning from him.
Roger has read many books on magic, but Nicolas Flamel is a personal participant in the content of many books.
Thinking that he with a different perspective can bring him a lot of gains,
Knowing that the second-year Defense Against the Dark Arts professor is likely to be Nicolas Flamel, Roger did not continue to delve into this topic.
Instead, he turned his head and asked about the purpose of his visit at the beginning: “Headmaster Dumbledore, what is the international situation like outside now?”
“If I go on an international trip, will it be affected?”
Roger is not worried about himself, after all, he has a crisis premonition and there can be no danger, but he is worried that it will affect other aspects.
Although Roger is a seer, his ability to predict the future outside of his crisis premonition is only at the level of Divination Professor Trelawney and is far from satisfactory.
