I walked out of the classroom after school, I exited the classroom, walked up the stairs and opened the door with a ‘Calligraphy Room’ sign.

“Konichiwa.”

As I entered the room, I greeted the club members who were already present.

“Oh, hello, President.”

“Good work!”

It was the club’s rule to greet each other properly.

“Rio is not here yet?”

“Oh, the Vice-President went out to buy drinks.”

One of the first-year club members told me.

All the members of the calligraphy club were girls except for me.

I felt uncomfortable in the beginning, but now I could say that I was used to it.

“Now, let’s start practicing.”

" "

I placed my bag down and sat on my seat.

I took out today’s assignment from the shelf behind me to practice copying the script, which was called Rinsho1to the world of calligraphy.

Using my favorite brush and ink, I started to write six characters on a half sheet of paper.

Silently, I focused on gathering my thoughts, and wrote each letter.

“Huh. …”

I looked up after a pause.

“You’re very good …”

“That’s our President for you!”

I noticed that Moe and Ami, club members from the first year, were peeking at me.

“Oh, you scared me!”

“You really forget about your surroundings when you’re doing Rinsho, huh…”

“What can I do? I’m concentrating.”

“Can you take a look at my work?”

Then Sakura appeared from behind me and held a piece of half-sheet paper at me.

She was only a first-year student, but she was very good at it.

“Yes, it’s very well written, isn’t it? Though, I must say, you’re not very good at Migi Harai2, are you?”

“I understand that”

“Yeah, There is a peculiar way of Migi Harai. You should try to relax more.”

I said, and showed her my writing.

“How can you write like that in just one go? …”

“Practice.”

I was confident because I had stayed up later than anyone else to practice and polish my skills.

Well, it was not good to be overconfident.

“President, look at mine next.”

“And me next!”

Moe and Ami also brought over their work.

Just then, the door to the adjoining room opened.

“Tojo, can I have a minute?”

Kawai, our advisor and the high school’s calligraphy teacher, came out from the calligraphy department’s preparation room next door.

“Hai, I’m coming!”

Haruki stood up and headed for the calligraphy department preparation room.

“Sorry. I am called away, maybe another time.”

I walked to the front of the calligraphy preparation room and knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

“Excuse me.”

I looked around the room, which was still cluttered with work and materials, and went over to Kawai.

“What can I do for you?”

“Yeah, well, please have a seat.”

Kawai pointed to a nearby pipe chair3.

“Yes. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

“You know this, right?”

Kawai handed me a booklet.

“This is our student council magazine, right?”

“Yeah, They want you to write the cover for it. The student council president asked me to do it.”

“Why me again?”

“Ma~, don’t look so bothered. You’re famous in the school, you know.”

After all, I had won many top prizes in calligraphy competitions, which were considered a great accomplishment at this school.

“I understand. I’ll do it.”

“Thank you very much. Then ask the president of the student council for more information. He will bring you the materials next time.”

“Yes, I understand.”

That was the end of the conversation with Kawai; therefore I left the calligraphy preparation room.

It is the bread and butter of any calligrapher serious about developing his skill, and at the same time a traditional way of studying, ever since the beginning of the art of calligraphy.MIGI HARAI – 右払い – Brush out ( Right).Pipe chair:- Literally made of pipes.
