I have a Synthesizer
#49 - Swarm Dryad
During their long journey, Lilith began to teach Klein some wilderness survival skills.
From the most basic, like identifying directions and setting up markers, to finding herbs to repel insects, edible fruits, and water sources.
Although Klein was an Arcanist and could conjure food and drink, he still diligently took notes, as having more skills was never a bad thing.
If he ever found himself in a situation where his magic was exhausted, these skills would come in handy.
During a day's trek, they encountered two more magical beasts, but Lilith easily dealt with them.
Two attempts at synthesis resulted in one failure and one success, which was then consumed by the two of them.
As night fell, the sun had been down for a while, and the light was dimming. Reaching a large tree, Lilith signaled Klein to stop.
“We couldn't find a cave, which is a bit of a pity. Tonight, we'll have to camp here.”
Klein looked at the surrounding weeds. They didn't have sleeping bags or tents, and there were so many poisonous insects. If they slept on the ground, wouldn't they be eaten alive by bugs?
“Sleep on the ground? I really hate mosquitoes. Can we find another place?” Klein said, feeling conflicted.
“Of course not. Sleeping on the ground is too dangerous. The trees are the relatively safe place.”
Lilith pointed to the big tree beside them.
After speaking, Lilith leaped up and landed on the thickest branch.
Klein watched Lilith jump up so easily, impressed. He thought about trying to jump up himself, but alas, the law of gravity still existed in this world.
“Hey, it's so high up. How am I supposed to get up there?”
“I thought you didn't need my help!”
Lilith teased him before throwing down a rope.
Klein grabbed the rope and climbed up, swaying from side to side on the branch as if he was about to fall.
“Lilith, this place is so small, how are we going to rest? Close our eyes and meditate?”
Klein looked at the branch beneath his feet. Although it was thick, it was round. How could he sleep like this?
Lilith glanced at him and simply lay down on the branch.
“Just lean against the trunk and make do. You're the one who wanted to walk to Laisas. I didn't force you.”
Lilith's physical fitness and balance were excellent. Even lying on a round branch, she had no problem.
But Klein was different. He first sat sideways on the branch, but always felt like he would fall backward.
Then he switched to straddling the branch, but still felt like he was swaying left and right when he dozed off.
Stealing a glance at Lilith, she seemed to have already fallen asleep. Klein felt even more like crying.
He had chosen this path himself, and he would have to continue it with tears in his eyes.
Again, awkwardly turning around, Klein scooted backward, hugging the tree trunk. This sleeping position barely gave him a sense of security.
A day of running around had left Klein exhausted, and he fell into a deep sleep soon after lying down.
… …
Deep in the night, bright moonlight shone down on the forest, and the surroundings were eerily quiet.
It was already late spring and early summer, and there were not only no magical beasts, but not even the chirping of normal insects, which was quite strange.
A cloud floated towards the moon, and the bright forest gradually darkened.
In the shadows, the large tree beneath Klein and Lilith seemed to move slightly.
If one looked from afar, a wrinkle resembling a human face seemed to appear in the center of the tree's trunk.
There were no pupils, only a bright black color like ink.
Several black vines, hidden in the shadows under the moonlight, gradually approached Klein and Lilith.
One vine first touched Lilith's ankle, rubbing against her skin.
Lilith suddenly opened her eyes, slightly surprised.
“Klein? Is he really this bold?”
So this guy finally knows to take the initiative. Come on! Lilith was immediately intrigued. She didn't resist, but instead closed her eyes.
But when the vine wrapped around her ankle, she realized something was wrong.
“This isn't Klein's hand.”
At this moment, the mouth of the human face in the center of the tree trunk gradually opened, and a swarm of black insects flew out, heading towards Klein and Lilith.
They made some "sisisisi" sounds.
Klein also suddenly woke up from his sleep, thinking to himself.
“There's also magic fluctuations? I just want to get a good night's sleep! Is it really that difficult?”
At this time, Klein was already entangled in two or three vines. He decisively drew his blade and cut off the vines on his body, standing up.
Klein didn't get distracted to check the mission. In this situation, if he wasn't focused enough, it would only bring danger.
He might not be as perceptive as Lilith, but Klein cherished his life more than most people, and it could be said that he lived carefully.
The environment in the wild was too dangerous, and he had never entered a deep sleep.
So, after slightly sensing the fluctuations of magic, Klein's first reaction was to shout loudly.
“Lilith, enemy attack!”
Klein looked at the shaking tree and couldn't help but complain.
“Didn't you wake up yourself? Instead of saying useless things, you should think about how to kill this strange tree.”
Lilith pouted. Black battle aura had already covered her entire body.
This could protect her body from being bitten by these insects.
While the two were talking, a swarm of black insects, mixed in the darkness of the night, had already begun to approach them.
In the dark night, one could only hear a buzzing sound. The insects' small size made it difficult to lock onto a target.
One could only feel like a cloud of black mist was pouncing towards them.
Lilith had already jumped down from the tree branch. Klein also grabbed the rope and slid down, causing the swarm of insects to miss.
Once on the ground, the swarm of insects still chased relentlessly. Lilith, wielding the hatchet, began to fight with the swarm of insects.
Some insects fell to the ground, and Klein finally saw what they looked like. They were a bit like locusts from his hometown, but they were black and had sharp mouthparts.
There were too many insects, and they couldn't be killed completely. Klein retreated a few steps and began to sense the direction of the magic fluctuations.
As his mental power spread out, Klein felt that the fluctuations of magic were coming from the tree trunk. Now it was good. If he wanted to win, he had to take down the tree first.
“Disturbing my sleep, I'll burn you down with a fire.” Klein thought, feeling suffocated.
Fel energy began to gather in Klein's hands. While Lilith intercepted the insects, a Hellfire Ball spell flew towards the big tree.
But all the insects immediately abandoned attacking the two and formed an insect net, forcibly blocking the Hellfire Ball.
“Ah! ~”
When the fireball devoured these insects, an ear-piercing scream came from the mouth of the tree-person's face.
Klein no longer probed and fired three consecutive fireballs, burning the insects in front of him to ashes in an instant.
Lilith also threw the iron knife in her hand aside, and with a wave of her hand, a black scythe appeared in her hand.
