On the other hand, the supercharger diameter cannot be increased indefinitely. As a result, this forms a high-altitude intake pressure bottleneck.

Second, at low altitudes, in general, the supercharger can provide sufficient pressure. However, we all know that compressed air will cause the air temperature to rise sharply and cause deflagration, which forms a low-altitude deflagration bottleneck.

In order to solve the contradiction between these two aspects, there are several basic technical means: use a two-stage supercharger to break through the bottleneck of high-altitude intake pressure; try to cool the compressed air before it enters the cylinder to avoid deflagration; use higher-grade fuel , violently broke through the low-altitude deflagration bottleneck.

In fact, the British did exactly that on the engine of the Spitfire.

Of course, the German DB engine technicians also know the effectiveness of these measures, but these measures are difficult to apply to the DB engine:

The first reason is the technical reason of the equipment itself, such as the deadly shaft gun.

It takes up valuable space where the engine would otherwise be located, of course this is only a secondary reason.

The fundamental reason lies in two other points:

The supercharger of the DB engine is a continuously variable speed supercharger, which is inconvenient to set up a 2-stage supercharger, and the designers of the DB engine are reluctant to abandon the traditional advantage of the infinitely variable speed.

Secondly, due to the use of direct fuel injection technology, the spark plugs are prone to carbon deposition under high intake pressure conditions, and it is reluctant to give up direct injection, and there is no technical accumulation of advanced carburetors.

The rest is the reason outside the engine:

First of all, the basic technical means of air intake cooling is to use an intercooler, but the intercooler is quite large and not light in weight, so it is difficult to use it on a small aircraft such as the ME-109E.

Secondly, there was no effective solution for high-grade fuel oil before the establishment of Libyan oil fields.

In fact, technical problems can be avoided by other means. If you really can't solve the trouble, you can learn from the Soviets to engage in distinct high and low altitude fighters, such as the MiG 3 and the Yak 3, and you can make do with it. The shortage of the Third Reich also prefers both high and low altitude...
