Chapter 74 - Treasures Me Greatly

Amber’s heart was as calm and peaceful as a still lake. For Amber who had already experienced it all a decade ago, she felt sick of Bella’s repeated actions.

Amber didn’t hesitate at all as she strode inside the Vine Room.

Everyone inside including Bella looked surprised at her actions. The maids were astonished at the bravery Amber showed as she sat in the chair opposite of Bella in an elegant manner. Bella was scowling in anger with confusion written all over her face.

For a moment, a suffocating silence passed the inside the Vine Room.

Amber gazed directly at Bella with a quiet composure.

Though it would have been great if Bella also became subservient like Grace did, she was not someone so easy to rule over.

Bella quickly hid her confusion and anger as she switched back to a cold expression.

“Have I told you to sit down, Amber?”

“No.”

“Then why are you sitting?”

At Bella’s question, Amber replied with an innocent expression as if she didn’t understand anything and widened her eyes as she stared back. “Ah, since you didn’t tell me to sit even after calling for me, I simply thought you had forgotten.”

Bella’s forehead twisted with a frown. Amber wasn’t fazed by Bella’s annoyance at all and continued. “You weren’t planning to keep me standing there perhaps, were you?”

The maids collectively gasped and held their breaths in surprise.

Bella was now carefully studying Amber with completely frozen eyes.

“You are acting quite insolent,” Bella set her teacup down as she spoke. “However, even if I did forget to tell you to sit, it is bad manners to sit without say from your superior, Amber.”

“I see. I shall be careful from now on.” As Amber didn’t want to deal with a difficult argument that could last hours, she ended the conversation in an inconsiderate agreement.

That made Bella even angrier. “Little girl, you…”

“But have I ever given the key to the Vine Room to you, Your Grace?” Just as Bella was about to threaten Amber, Amber cut her off with a question. “I was just surprised to see the Vine Room open. Though others can temporarily open it if the lady isn’t present, I heard that it was completely under my control otherwise.” Amber grinned. “I heard that it was the ‘custom’ of the Eastern Lands to do so.”

And just like she did for Grace, Amber returned the words that Bella used to attack her right back.

Bella forced her mouth into a smile, but her eyes were completely filled with resentment towards Amber for challenging her position and authority over the workings of the castle household.

“That is not something you need to concern yourself with. I can use the Vine Room as I please.” Bella spoke as she gestured with her hand for the maid to fill her cup. The maid who was about to prepare a cup for Amber as well out of habit quickly stepped back at Bella’s fearsome glare. “Because he gave me permission.”

The only person Bella could casually call was just one person. It was Bella’s husband, the previous Duke of Thales, Detlef Thales.

“He knew that I was feeling lonesome so told me to call you over for a chat and opened the Vine Room for me.”

Bella pulled a single key from her bosom and hung it on her finger as she slowly shook it side to side. With an antique design and embedded jewel, it was without a doubt the key to the Vine Room.

“He treasures me greatly, as you can see.” As Bella gleefully informed Amber of the side the previous Duke chose, she leisurely smiled form her seat.

Amber fell into deep thought as she stared at the key dangling in front of her eyes.

She knew that the previous duke treasured the young wife he married late in his life, but she hadn’t known that it was to this extent.

In Amber’s previous life, the previous duke always took a step back from things related to the household. He didn’t visit the castle often and spent most of his time at the royal villa, entrusting the army to Kalix.
