"Huh? What? What did you say? Kiss?"

Gu YuChen froze and swallowed audibly. 'Was Su Ning referring to something else?'

The girl's eyes narrowed further and she turned to the young man seated beside her on the bed. "Gu YuChen! Spill it! What were you talking about? What kiss?"

"Kis-- Kis-- Kismet!" Gu YuChen nervously declared.

Now it was Su Ning's turn to be confused, "Huh?!"

'What is this boy going on about? What kismet?' Su Ning's brows furrowed.

"Do you believe in kismet?" he asked, unusually earnest.

"Uhm.. I don't know what that is," Su Ning answered tentatively.

"It means fate," Gu YuChen softly explained. 

"Ah...I'm not sure,' she said softly. 'Do I believe in fate? Well, I guess I do believe in such a thing as bad fate. In my past life, I worked so hard to get out of my situation without any result. All my hardwork was used to pay my dad's debts. I thought I would suffer forever. Who would have thought death would be my escape? I even ended up getting reborn into a younger body, cherished by her friends and family. I'm blessed with so many opportunities that I never got in the past. Now, I'm even on an international trip for the first time, in the UK no less,' Su Ning thought to herself. 

"Hmm yeah. Yeah I guess I do believe in destiny," the young girl said after a while. Su Ning had a gentle smile on her face that mesmerized Gu YuChen. 

"Me too. I believe it too," Gu YuChen said softly, staring at the girl intently. But the man had a rueful smile on his face.

Su Ning coughed. 'Gu YuChen is being strange,' she noted. 'Is it just me or the air seems weird somehow. Wait a minute, is he just trying to deflect?! Jiao hua!'

"Ahem! So anyways! Don't think you can escape! You still didn't say why you've been avoiding me these past weeks!" Su Ning cried out, reverting back to the original topic of conversation. She sat facing Gu YuChen, her arms akimbo.

"NingNing, were you sad?" Gu YuChen asked, a tinge of expectation could be detected in his voice.

"Huuumph! Sad?! Saaaad?! Ni hai gan wen?!" Su Ning said in a confrontational tone.

"Who said they treasured me most?! Who said I was their best friend?! Ni sa huang!!" accused Su Ning.

Su Ning also knew that her outburst was petty and childish but she couldn't help it. She didn't let Gu YuChen speak before continuing, "Well, sorry to disappoint you! You facial paralysis of a man! I wasn't sad! I was mad!"

The girl in front of Gu YuChen was obviously upset, her cheeks were flushed and her pretty face was twisted into a frown. But at that moment, Su Ning appeared to Gu YuChen like an angry goddess. 'Am I crazy? What am I thinking about at this moment? NingNing is angry at me but here I am thinking of how attractive she is,' Gu YuChen unconsciously gave a wry laugh.

"Xiao?! Ni gan xiao?!" Su Ning gasped in shock. 'Did this kid really just laugh at me!? The nerve! That's why people say don't raise others' kids. No sense of gratitude!' the young woman thought to herself. 

"NingNing, ni leng jing yi dian. Listen to me. I wasn't laughing at you," Gu YuChen tried to explain calmly. 'I was laughing at myself. I was laughing at how hopeless I am. My 200 IQ is completely useless when you're around. But there is no way I can say that without giving myself away,' the young man thought sadly to himself.

"Really!? You're not laughing at me? Then who were you laughing at huh?" Su Ning asked Gu YuChen only to be met with silence. 

Unfortunately, Su Ning took Gu YuChen's lack of response as acknowledgement of his misconduct. 'I thought we could talk through this matter between us before I left for London but I guess not.'

"But NingNing, I really--- not laughing… you," the man muttered softly. Gu YuChen had a pleading look in his eyes but this went unnoticed by his companion. 

"Suan le, bu xiang gen ni jiang hua," Su Ning said before exerting all of her strength to shove Gu YuChen off the bed. 'Unfortunately, she had either underestimated Gu YuChen's sturdiness or overestimated her own strength because the man didn't budge an inch. She, on the other hand, lost her balance and ended up falling straight onto the man's lap.

'God! Hao diu lian,' Su Ning winced. She kept her face down on the guy's lap so as to hide her abashed expression. She was trying to vent her anger but she knew she just looked like a child in a toy shop throwing a tantrum because she couldn't get what she wanted. 'I'm a 29 year old ahjumma for God's sake. I just.. I just wanted our relationship to go back to how it was. Why is it so hard?'

Su Ning heard a sigh from above her, followed by a masculine voice, "NingNing, did you get hurt? Let me see."

"Don't want," Su Ning shook her head and burrowed her face deeper into the man's thighs. 'I'm too embarrassed.'

"!!!" Gu YuChen's eyes widened and he spoke, his voice urgent and tense. "NingNing, get up. Hurry."

"..." 'This kid.. He doesn't even want me touching him now…he's really changed,' she thought. Is this what happens when children reach adulthood?' she wondered before belatedly realizing that Gu YuChen had someone he liked. Abruptly, Su Ning bolted upright. 'How could I forget! Gu YuChen has someone he likes! He probably wants to reserve skinship with her from now on. Maybe he's even busy because of her!' The realization hit Su Ning quickly; it was like a light bulb flashed in her head. Yet a split second later, she had a sudden heavy feeling in her chest. It was an odd and unpleasant sensation. But she forced herself to ignore that feeling and focus her attention back to the man seated beside her.

"NingNing? Are you alright?," Gu YuChen asked worriedly before adding, "You hit your face. Your nose is a bit red." The man gingerly held Su Ning's face observing it closely.

With Gu YuChen's face a mere centimeters away from hers, Su Ning was able to observe his features clearly. Inky black phoenix eyes, high nose bridge, full brows, thick lashes, and thin lips that fit his face. Gu YuChen is a very handsome man. All of a sudden the room felt a bit hot.

"Yeah, it's a bit hot here," Su Ning said, fanning herself. 

"NingNing, will you listen to me?" Gu YuChen asked gently and the girl nodded. 

"I really wasn't laughing at you. I just thought of something funny at that time. And I wasn't ignoring you.. There's no way I would do that. These past few weeks I've really been busy. There are some complications with the new company. And I also have a new project in SunFox. I meant to keep it as a surprise. But a new game will be released soon. It should be available for you to download in Japan before you start university in April," he explained.

"Oh…" she whispered. 'What? So it really was because of work. It wasn't because of a girl. I'm glad,' she thought suddenly before shaking her head. 'Wait, why am I glad?'

"There's another surprise in store for you when you start playing," Gu YuChen added, interrupting the girl's thoughts.

"Really?" Su Ning asked, her mood visibly lifting. 

"Have I ever lied to you?" her friend asked and Su Ning shook her head.

"So, you're no longer upset?" Gu YuChen prodded.

"No. I'm not upset anymore. I just … I felt YuChen-ge had been so distant lately. And I didn't like it. It doesn't feel good when you're not around like you used to be. Cause you were busy before too but you always had time for me. I've been here in Cambridge for over a week you know! And this is the first time I'm seeing your face despite living in your home! Does that make sense?" she asked rather heatedly.

"NingNing… You.. You were upset because I didn't have time for you?" Gu YuChen spoke slowly, deliberately.

"Yes! Obviously!" the girl cried out.

"But why?" Gu YuChen asked, a look of incomprehension crossed his face.

"Why!?" she echoed, startled

"NingNing, weren't you feeling pressured because of my actions?" Gu YuChen asked tentatively.

"What?! That's true but..." she began before shutting her mouth. She didn't know how to respond.

"And you were the one who wanted to keep some distance between us by choosing a university in Japan," Gu YuChen said after a thoughtful pause.

"Well.. I…" Su Ning stammered.

"So why?"  Gu YuChen asked once more.
