Mutant Farmer in The Apocalypse

Yang Zhang and all his pets decided to rest after a long, tiring day.

Yang Zhang fell asleep quickly because he was exhausted, but not one of his pets, Little Ivy. Little Ivy was worried because she could hear the grunting voice of zombies walking outside of the cottage.

"Viii…" Little Ivy whimpered and wrapped her vines around Yang Zhang's arm even tighter than before, making the man frown in pain.

He opened his eyes slowly and then patted Little Ivy in a daze, "It's okay… Ivy. I'm here… Zzzz…."

"Vii…" Little Ivy was still restless. She looked around the cottage with only small candle lit by Lt. Spicy Wing an hour ago.

Her small beady eyes darted at the peat in the pot where her Master planted a Brain bead inside the soil. She witnessed how the leaves started shaking on their own, and all the leaves and branches of the pea plant suddenly rooted inside the soil, leaving only the three pea pods hanging with a small trunk supporting them.

Slowly, a bigger pea emerged from the soil and went up on the trunk. Two small beads popped and acted as eyes, similar to Little Ivy's beady eyes.

One big pea emerged and became its body, two smaller ones emerged to be its legs, the three pea pods tied up into one, making a big pea pod bag for the living plant, and to complete it, the plant made a small hat made out of a leaf.

And—wala!

"Vii?" Little Ivy called the newly mutated plant, unsure of what to do next since she never saw her kin that wasn't hostile to her master before.

The pea pod turned around, and his beady eyes stared at Little Ivy. He looked like a little boy, complete with a little hat and carrying a bag bigger than his body.

"Pii?"

"Vii!"

Little Ivy was excited the moment the pea pod answered her. She slowly released her tight grip from her master but still had one vine grappling on the wrist. She slowly approached the pea pod and stretched one of her vines, trying to touch the little pea pod.

"Vii… Vii…"

"Pii!"

The little pea pod cheerfully approached Little Ivy and gave her a hug instead.

They were hugging for a while until the little pea pod asked where they were and their identities, "Pii?? Pii, Pii?"

"Vii!" Little Ivy pointed at Yang Zhang, who was still in a deep sleep, and told the little peapod that person was their master.

"Vii! Vii!"

"Pii!"

Little Ivy raised one of her vines, and then—

SLAP!

Little Ivy slapped Yang Zhang's cheek hard to wake him up, and Yang Zhang quickly opened his eyes and looked around in full alert, thinking that he had been attacked, "Who's there!?"

"Vii! Vii!" Little Ivy pulled the vine grabbing Yang Zhang's wrist, and showed the little animal that had just mutated.

Yang Zhang stared at the little mutated plant carrying a bag of pea pod that was bigger than his body. The little plant looked up and stared at Yang Zhang and then greeted, "Pii…."

"WHOA! You've finally mutated!"

"GRRRHHH!"

Yang Zhang zipped his mouth instantly when he heard the sound of the feral zombie outside. Zombies were very active and dangerous at night, it would be a handful to fight one right now, so it was best to keep his silence.

"Vii…"

"Pii…"

Little Ivy and the small pea pod grouped together and hugged Yang Zhang at the same time. They looked scared whenever they heard the sound of a zombie grunting.

Yang Zhang drew out the conclusion quickly, "Little guy, are you… scared of zombies?"

"Pii…" the small pea pod nodded weakly. "Pii... Pii… Pii!"

"Ah…" Yang Zhang knew what the small pea pod was talking about. He said that he had never heard that kind of scary grunt. He was raised in a quiet place with a kind grandma.

"I see. Since you're raised in a greenhouse, you never heard of zombies or see any scary things," Yang Zhang mumbled.

"Pii…"

"Okay, okay, I understand," Yang Zhang carefully picked up the little mutated plant and smiled at him, "It's okay, I will protect you from all harm. Since you're now with me, we should give you a name, alright?"

The little pea pod stared at Yang Zhang and felt that this human was just as kind as Grandma, who cared for him every day until he grew up. Thus, the little pea pod agreed, "Pii…."

"Hmm… now, what kind of name would suit you?" Yang Zhang thought. He was considering a few names solely based on the characteristic of this new mutated plant.

"How about Little Pod? Little pea? Little Peapod? Poddie?"

"Pii!"

"Oh? Do you like Poddie? That name is simple, but it sounds cute," Yang Zhang said.

"Pii! Pii!" The little pea pod was now named Poddie. He seemed to like his new name.

Yang Zhang giggled and patted Poddie's head, "Okay, Poddie, you should introduce yourself to your other friends as well."

Yang Zhang patted Spicy Wing and Chestnut, who were still sleeping. They must be tired after a long day of fighting zombies and fighting that old woman's mutated plant.

"Chirp…"

"Squee…"

Chestnut and Lt. Spicy Wing opened their eyes slowly. They saw that their master was already holding a new friend that stared at them curiously.

"Chirp!"

"Squeak!"

"Hehe, are you guys surprised? This is our new friend. His name is Poddie!"

"Pii! Pii!"

Lt. Spicy Wing and Chestnut jumped on Yang Zhang's hand and snuggled with Poddie to make him feel at home.

"Vii! Vii!" Little Ivy also jumped in and stretched her vines, hugging them all at the same time, "Vii!"

"Hehe, let's work together from now, Poddie. I will make sure to protect you from any harm!"

"Pii!"

After they relished this fun family time, Yang Zhang yawned again, "Okay, guys, let's sleep again. We will talk about our next plan tomorrow. You too, Poddie, come here, sleep with us," Yang Zhang said as he patted a spot beside his head.

"Pii!"

Poddie jumped and used his pea pod bag as a pillow.

Yang Zhang smiled and closed his eyes, "Good night, guys."

Yang Zhang closed his eyes again, and the rest of the mutated pets also fell asleep soon after, except Poddie.

Poddie stared at Yang Zhang's sleeping face. This was the face of his new master.

"Pii…" Poddie drew near and hugged Yang Zhang by his nose, and slowly, the pea pod bag that he used glowed in the dark. The bag slowly filled up with round-shaped peas.

Poddie smiled full of relief once he realized that his pea pod bag was filled with a lot of peas. He didn't know if this would be useful for his new master or not, but this was what he could do, creating as many peas as possible for Yang Zhang.

"Pii, Pii!"
