Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey

Chapter 18 - Can we turn invisible?

Maverick had coated the tip with his saliva before positioning it on the baby's exposed hip. The baby watched with unwavering, unflinching eyes. Not knowing what was about to come.

Then he plunged the sharpened nail through the flesh.

-----

Donovan stood outside the door, pacing back and forth. After a while, he began to notice that the bruise on his arm was fading. The blackish purple had turned to blue before fading into a yellowish brown.

A sharp cry resonated from the room. Donovan stood alert. This was the second time there was crying. The first happened after a clang, the second after silence.

Donovan tried to use his connection to see what was going on, but Maverick blocked him. A few moments later, a short haired, short nailed Maverick walked out holding the baby.

"Your hair-" Before Donovan could finish his sentence, Maverick held the bracelet out, letting it dangle in front of his twin.

"Please give it to him someday." Maverick said with eyes of seriousness.

"Ok." Donovan promised as he reached for the wrist ornament. He bit his lip, contemplating whether he should say his next thought aloud. Finally he relented, hands squeezed into fists at his side.

"My mommies promised I could name him when we got him back."

Maverick had a sour look on his face. It was clear he was very jealous.

"But..." Donovan stretched out the word, making the alpha impatient. "I'll let you do that."

Maverick was stunned. His little brother was giving him surprise after surprise today.

"Is that really ok?"

"Hurry up before I change my mind!" Donovan huffed and crossed his arms. Maverick just seemed so forlorn when he opened the door. Maybe this might bring him a little comfort.

"Where was he born?" Maverick asked, never taking his eyes off of the bundle.

"A City." Donovan thought it didn't matter if he told him. He had an inkling that they were going to move further away from the lab, again.

There was silence before Maverick broke into a huge smile. "Easton. My mate is named Easton."

"Why?" Donovan didn't hold back a disgusted expression. "What kind of name is that?"

"Because he came to me from the east." Maverick ignored Donovan's disapproval and looked at him. "You'll remember right?"

Donovan sighed reluctantly and pouted. "I think Tweety would have been better."

This time Maverick was the one with the disgusted expression. Easton will definitely thank Maverick for saving him from being named after a children's cartoon.

-----

They headed back up to the surface, still blatantly ignored by the employees. Donovan felt invisible to the Lab workers. He wasn't sure why they were receiving this treatment, but the thought of being invisible in enemy territory was a great comfort.

They passed by the "welcoming group". The Director was still standing frozen, as were the security personnel. By the time the elevator doors were closing, only then did the Director glare into Donovan's eyes.

He got his memories back. Be a little more thankful, yeah?

"Maverick," Donovan pulled at his brother's now dirtied hospital gown. "Can we turn invisible?"

Maverick laughed out loud at Donovan's question. He asked with such a serious face. "No we can't."

"Why didn't anyone see us then?" Donovan was-in a word-perplexed. Very perplexed. He likes to understand everything. Everything must have a plausible explanation.

"Your connection." Maverick said as though that was the most obvious explanation.

When Donovan's face didn't change in acknowledgment, Maverick explained further.

"It showed me how you first used the memory ability. So I copied what you did but it was different. It was... bigger and I could do a little more." Maverick said, stroking the bundle absently. "No one really knows all the abilities of the Alpha X. Not even me."

"I see." Donovan looked at him funny. "It's weird because I know everything I can do but I'm pretty sure I can do more."

"Really?" Maverick turned to face Donovan.

"Yup. I know what other people are from their scent. I have pictures in my mind that show me what can happen in the future. Now I can talk to you from far away somehow. Also if I want to know everything about a person, I focus on their eyes and pull their memories out. I found that out after we shared our memories." Donovan listed what he could do. "At first, I thought everyone could do it too, but your memories and mommies told me I was wrong."

"How come I didn't see that even after we shared memories?" Maverick was confused.

"Did you need to see in my memories I know how to breath, eat, and go potty?" Donovan asked matter-of-factly.

"No?"

"Exactly."
