Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey
Chapter 19 - It can't end like this.
Ding!
The elevators opened. Never had Maverick wished to stay in the confined space of the elevator for as long as possible. Never had Maverick imagined that there would be a day he dreaded to leave the Lab premises as he did now.
"It's best if you hand him to me now. Before the group sees you." Donovan eyed Maverick warily, expecting an argument. Maverick hadn't moved when the elevator doors opened. He just stood there as though standing still would stop the inevitable.
Maverick gave one last lingering look at his sleeping mate as he finally stepped out of the suffocating tin box. "Goodbye Easton Morris."
"Oaks. Easton Oaks." Donovan showed a very much displeased expression. They're too young to think of marriage. Easton's still a baby! Oh for crying out loud.
Now Donovan's worried. There has to be rules. No dating until 40. That's what alpha mommy told him. So naturally, same rule apply to Easton. The omega nodded, satisfied with his solution.
"He'll soon be a Morris so why bother with your last name?" The alpha huffed, before tenderly ċȧrėssing Easton's cheeks as he turned to bend down, passing the baby over to his little brother comfortably.
Donovan was just about to rebuttal a sassy reply when a light was shone onto Maverick's back momentarily blinding the omega.
"Hands in the air! Where I can see them!"
Both Maverick and Donovan froze. Hearts pounding, stomachs dropping to the floor. Before any could make out who the other is, Maverick's protective instinct kicked in. His body moved automatically shoving Donovan back into the elevator, holding his mate to his ċhėst. He wasn't fast enough. He couldn't close the elevator doors in time before shots were fired.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Donovan hit the floor immediately, covering his ears-but that did little to stop the ringing from the monstrous noises.
Maverick covered Easton's ears and used his body to shield his tiny mate. Easton was crying, loudly, alerting their attackers of his presence.
Great. Just great.
"Sh, shshshshsh," Maverick tried to pacify the baby, doing his best to ignore the pain. There were three bullets lodged in his back. Well, better him than his mate. Always better him.
Pain is weakness leaving the body. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Pain is weakness leaving the body... The mantra helped to calm Maverick down. It was too risky to pass the baby to Donovan. But if he can't secure the safety of his mate, he can't fight.
Maverick's mind went in turmoil, unable to think clearly. The inner chaos broke the dam that held back all his negative emotions. Maverick was close to losing control, letting animalistic instinct take over rationality.
"Don'tshootdon'tshootdon'tshoot!" A familiar scent wafted Donovan's nose as the person who shouted tentatively edged closer to the opening of the elevator.
Alpha mommy!
"Mommy!" Donovan shouted, hoping to get her attention.
"Don't worry sweet pea, mommy will come get you." Gabrielle's words bounced off deaf ears. She thought that Donovan screamed for her help. That he was frightened.
Donovan couldn't make out what alpha mommy said, but he knew she was misunderstanding. He has to let his mommy know that this is all a big misunderstanding! The omega child couldn't understand his mother's hatred towards Maverick. He could practically taste it in the air. Maverick's only a kid, just like Donovan. What did he do to Gabrielle?
"You." Maverick growled as he glanced behind. In the end, rationality won. Canines extended, a natural habit when he encounters danger. How dare a mother shoot at her own child?
"Put my son down." Gabrielle's voice was cold, pointing her gun at Maverick. The Alpha X didn't budge. His hair started growing in front of her eyes and his canines became more prominent. Catching her by surprise.
"Now!" Gabrielle yelled. Her hands were shaking. So it's come to this. A battle she would lose if she had to fight... it.
I've come face to face with the monster. God, if you're there… please let me look at my son, even if it's for a second before it kills him. Before it becomes too late for me.
Her trembling finger was on the trigger, seconds away from putting pressure and firing a shot at the Alpha X.
Wham!
A second before Gabrielle could do anything, Donovan's small body slammed into her, catching her off guard.
"Mommy stop! Please!" Donovan was crying. "Stop!"
This time, his words hit deaf ears. Gabrielle couldn't comprehend why Donovan was siding with the Alpha X. The monster. The very thing that ruined everyone's lives. The very thing holding his baby brother captive. Hurting them.
Che. Of course he'd side with blood.
The thought brought an unspeakable amount of rage. Her hands stopped shaking.
Donovan is no son of mine. No son of mine would be traitorous enough to side with the Alpha X.
Gabrielle glared at Donovan, releasing angry pheromones. The first time she ever did that. Donovan gasped, paralyzed more by her gaze than her pheromones.
This woman in front of him was no longer his mother. A stranger stood before his eyes. Gabrielle grabbed Donovan's arm and pushed him behind her roughly, making him yelp when he collided to the floor.
"Gil!" A horrified voice.
Donovan was gently picked up from the floor. Uncle Bertie! The relief quickly turned into panic. Would he turn out like alpha mommy too? Turn into a stranger before his eyes? Donovan flinched and tried to inch away from his fatherly figure and mentor.
While he was hoisted into seemingly safe arms, the omega's bleary eyes was able to make out what was happening. He saw the events unfold slowly.
Everyone surrounded Maverick, guns pointing at him but not shooting because of baby Easton. Those who had daggers expertly threw them at the Alpha X, hoping to safely disable him. One nestled deep in his upper arm, another his left calf. More and more and more…
Maverick was losing blood. A lot of it. Easton was crying loudly, scared and confused. If only if he would just stop wailing!
Donovan tried to move, tried to do something, anything. But he couldn't. He could only watch as his dearest caretaker was hurting his brother. The pain was insurmountable.
It can't end like this.
