Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey

Chapter 20 - Brother needs me.

Donovan was about to succumb to the darkness. Let his eyes close, enter a deep sleep and pray this was all just a bad dream. He just needed to wake up from this nightmare. That's the only thing that made sense. This can't be real.

But Maverick turned his head-looking past his attackers-and looked Donovan straight in the eyes. Just like a few hours ago when they met face to face. Only this time, Maverick's eyes were begging for help. Pleading.

You're my only hope. Help me. Please.

That's what that gaze meant. Instantly Donovan snapped out of whatever reverie he was trapped in. This nightmare is a reality and he must face it. Or he would lose a brother forever.

He already lost his alpha mommy, most likely to the point of no return. He won't lose Maverick too. He won't betray his family.

Donovan tore away from Gilbert's strong arms, kicking him with power that surprised the both of them. The next minute he was dodging bullets, knives, and armored bodies. The wave of pheromones was like boulder of rock, weighing heavily on top of Donovan.

Still he ran. One thing the omega distinctively remembers from Maverick's memories were his mantras.

Pain is weakness leaving the body. Pain is just a state of mind.

Donovan picked up speed, his ringing ears could make out muffled shouts but at that moment he didn't care what alpha mommy or Uncle Gilbert or omega mommy or Jerry thought of him anymore. Fact is, his brother needs him

----

Maverick was on his last strand of life. He angrily looked up at the elevator camera, wincing when another knife hit its mark. It's the same camera that captured Iris's and Gabrielle's escape with baby Donovan all those years ago. The Alpha X imagined the devil smirking candidly, looking at the monitor with scorn and contempt.

This is what I get for going against the devil. He might just let me die. Figures. I'm a pathetic alpha. Expecting my omega brother to help me.

A noise brought him out of his degrading thoughts. Droplets of hot salty tears fell onto Easton's face. Easton didn't like that.

Maverick gave a small, hardly noticeable laugh as he wiped his face tenderly. The movement caused Gabrielle to shout more commands.

Any second now he will fall down dead. He will be known as the Alpha X Failure. Not as Maverick but the Alpha X Failure. They will celebrate his downfall. Who wants a failure to continue living? Continue hindering others' lives?

<Maverick!>

It was a soft voice. But Maverick heard it loud and clear. He ċȯċked his ear to the side. Did Donovan just...?

<Maverick!> This time Donovan's voice echoed loudly in his head. Maverick wasn't surprised anymore. Yup. That's his little brother. He didn't know how to reply. Despair quickly filled his heart. He won't be able to say goodbye to newfound brother.

Funny isn't it? You meet the two people for the first time that make your world complete. Two people who actually make you happy... only for harsh karma to tear them away from you.

It must be punishment for being a disappointment. A failure. A pathetic Alpha X.

<!!!........!!!>

Donovan was shouting something at Maverick. But he couldn't hear it. There was only static in his ears.

Maverick was numb. He had given up.

This is the end.

-----

The moment Donovan transformed into his wolf form, he knew he would be deemed a monster to the very people who cared for him. Loved him, clothed him, fed him.

And this is how he repays them.

No! I shouldn't be thinking like that!

Donovan chastised himself. Saving Maverick is more important at the moment. He screamed in his mind, chanting his brother's name over and over again. To drown out his other thoughts.

<Maverick!>

<Maverick!>

Donovan saw the Alpha X twitch. He had heard him! He heard him! A plan formulated in Donovan's mind as an image came into view. The one who would bear the most consequences would be the omega himself.

And that's alright.

<Give me Easton and get into the elevator!>

This time the Alpha X didn't move. So he didn't hear him after all? Instead he felt dread. Maverick's and his own's.

Although transforming and running towards his twin only took mere seconds, Donovan knew he entered a suicide mission.

But a question rang in his mind, like a siren that won't go off.

Why isn't Maverick tapping into his Alpha X abilities?
