Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey

Chapter 22 - Right Here

Whoosh!

The music of wind and the smell of sea breeze wafted in the air harmoniously. In the distance, if you really strained your ears, you could hear the rhythmic lull of waves crashing onto a rocky shore.

It was warm, comfortable. Too comfortable.

"Donovan!"

Instantly, the omega's eyes opened. Wide and alert. Was that…?

"Calm down. Calm down." Maverick rushed to his little brother's side, worried that he might hyperventilate just as he did when he first visited. He scooped the shaking mandarin into his arms.

"Wh-where," Donovan wheezed as he clutched at Maverick's white gown. "Am I?"

"You're safe here, trust me." Maverick reassured.

But Donovan had a troubled look, his eyes darted looking for intruders, the slightest sign that hinted they were in danger. But there was nothing. It was so peaceful, and Donovan somehow felt disappointment.

Suspiciously serene... that could only mean...

"Am I…?" Donovan didn't want to hear Maverick's answer. He turned away, prepared for the worst.

"Alive. Barely but alive." Maverick soothed his little brother, rocking him back and forth in his arms.

"So we're….alive?" Donovan looked up eyes brimming with leaps and bounds of happiness.

"We are. Otherwise you wouldn't be here." Maverick laughed at his worrisome brother.

"Whew." Donovan loudly exhaled. He looked down. "Why am I wearing your ugly dress?"

"Would you rather be nȧkėd?" Maverick retorted. "Besides these clothes are the easiest for me to bring."

"What do you mean?" Donovan was curious. Maverick could imagine him becoming a scientist, but a kinder one compared to the Lab workers.

"You're in a coma." Maverick said slowly and calmly as to not worry the omega. "You have been for a few months."

"But I thought alpha momm-" Donovan winced at the memory. "I thought Gabrielle… killed me."

"I'm not too sure what happened either." Maverick had a complicated look on his face. It's best if Donovan didn't find out. Ever.

Donovan noticed that Maverick was hiding something. He decided not to pry. The relationship between the brothers is fragile enough as it is. They haven't known each other for long.

"That doesn't matter." Donovan brushed it off. Some things are best kept buried. "What matters is we're alive. Anyways what is this place?"

"Well…" Maverick drew the word out, copying Donovan from earlier purposely. The omega reacted by scrunching his face in annoyance. A fit of giggles erupted from the boys. Now they have shared an inside joke.

Something only the two of them understand. Something only they have in common. Maverick never thought a day like this would come.

"I'm in a coma too." Maverick said once the laughter subsided. "The Lab deemed me worthy enough to keep alive. But they aren't speeding my recovery like usual."

"Are you in pain?" Donovan asked tenderly. The image of Maverick's bloody back conjured. It was an ugly sight. The whiteness of the hospital gown only made his wounds seem worse. The blood darkly contrasted against the garment. The bullet wounds lodged deep into his flesh, ripping a gaping hole in the cloth.

"No. I'm alright. You?"

"My hip doesn't hurt." Donovan gingerly pressed the very spot his dear Uncle Bertie shot at him. He still can't believe it. Doesn't want to believe it. But that's what happened. There's no denying it.

"Yup. I figured as much. We don't feel pain in here." Maverick leaned back leisurely. The soft grass reminding him of his mate.

Donovan kept silent. He only rolled to the side, staring up at the cloudless sky with Maverick.

"I've visited here many times before." Maverick stated. "I don't remember when was the first time… probably the after the first time I lost conciousness. That was because of my parents'…"

A bitter taste entered his mouth.

"So now everytime they hurt me I end up here." Maverick said. "But it doesn't shoo away the memories of what happened. I'm here but the memories flood in. It's like they're not mine, except they are."

"Is this another one of your abilities?" Donovan asked.

"I don't know, I always thought I was hallucinating. But now you're here too." Maverick turned onto his side looking at Donovan.

It was now Donovan noticed how fresh his appearance was. His hair was cropped short and fashioned stylishly. His face was clean and looked more his age. He looked healthy

"You look good." Donovan snorted.

"Speak for yourself." Maverick laughed and playfully shoved Donovan. Lightly. He knows how the omega bruises easily.

"So… how'd I end up here?" Donovan sat up and looked around. They were on a grassy cliff. He could guess what was at the bottom. The ocean.

"Remember when I first talked to you through the mirror?" Maverick asked.

"Yes. That was… weird." Donovan remembered their first encounter. He still can't believe that this handsome brother next to him is the same rugged boy in the mirror.

"Well, I was in a deep sleep at that time too." Maverick began. "I could always feel you near me. But you were so far away."

"I never felt anything like that." Donovan was puzzled, but it must be an unexplainable Alpha X thing.

"So in my sleep I walked towards you, until you showed up." Maverick couldn't exactly explain he did it. Dreams aren't the easiest to explain.

"So you walked," Donovan used air quotations around the word. "Towards me, right?"

"Similar. I pulled you here." Maverick stated, then he sat up and hugged his twin. "You have no idea how relieved I was to feel you. It meant you were still alive."

Donovan smiled contently. Why was he worried about losing his adoptive family? All the family he needs is right here.. In front of him.
