Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey
Chapter 41 - the six year waste
When those precious words entered Donovan's ears, he immediately teared up. Emotions got the better of him and Easton found himself in Donovan's arms.
"Thank you." Donovan whispered into Easton's ear. The two words were thick with tears and emotion.
Easton only squeezed his older brother tighter.
Dinner continued on peacefully. There was a happy atmosphere bubbling around the group. Many smiles were exchanged and laughter rang throughout the house. Gabrielle could only go along with everybody without drawing attention to her suspicious behavior.
Once everyone finished eating, Gabrielle immediately asked Donovan to go back to the dorms for the night. Of course this was done discretely.
"I understand," Donovan forced a smile. "Mother-"
"I am not your mother."
"Yes, right. Of course." With that, Donovan left, taking care that no one noticed, especially Alfie.
He walked alone into the darkness of the night with only the nighttime stars and street lamps lighting his way. The lone omega reached into his pant pocket and pulled out his phone
~University Dorms~
Mark's silent room was disturbed with a buzz. It's time.
"Are you feeling better? Are you able to-"
"I'm out."
Instantly Maverick shot out of his seat. His blood ran colder than a reptile's corpse. This can't be happening. Not after all this time!
"Tell me you're joking."
"I'm. Out." Donovan repeated. His heart pounded, he knows Mark is not going to take this very well at all.
Originally all Donovan was going to ask was for a ride to the dorms, but the first words to come out of his mouth were "I'm out".
There was silence on the other side of the phone before a shaky voice asked, "Why?"
"I can't hurt them."
"You know the possibility of injuring them is a measly thirty percent."
"That's thirty percent more than I'm willing to risk."
"So you were just using me, eh?"
"Don't draw to that conclusion."
"Without me, there'd be no Anti-X." There was a ragged breath. "Take it back. You can't do this to me. Not after everything I-we've been through!"
"Mark you must move on from Walter's death. This… this obsession of ours it just isn't healthy. I want out."
There was a pause. Donovan knows that he has lost a friend forever and made another enemy.
"Don't say his name," Mark heaved. "Y-y-you're g-going down! Down! Donovan! Mark my words."
What surprised the omega the most was he didn't feel any remorse or guilt pulling back,
"I'll bring you down with me. Don't forget what's on my hard drive."
There was a sharp inhale. Mark knows exactly what Donovan's talking about. Evidence. He hangs up the phone abruptly. The device met the same fate as the coffee mug.
Anti-X. The exact replica of the purple liquid that still haunts Maverick. For six years, the two had meticulously planned for the downfall of the infamous Alpha X.
Maverick killed Walter six years ago. That's when the plan was born.
Donovan and Mark were only seventeen and didn't properly deal with their grief. Rage consumed the both of them.
An eye for an eye became a life for a life.
That's the way the revenge worked.
Donovan set aside his dreams of becoming a painter to be a chemist. Just to create Anti-X, to kill Maverick. Just to satisfy Mark's rage over Maverick killing his bond.
Yes, Mark had been bonded to Walter. Ever since he was a teenager. Only fourteen years old. Donovan did try to convince the pair to wait until Mark was a little older. Neither listened and now...
Well, Walter's dead and Mark can never love again. Donovan lost a friend. But Easton is no longer in danger.
What might Easton have to do with this?
Simple: He's Maverick's only weakness (aside from Anti-X)
His role in their plans: the bait
That's why Donovan changed his mind. He can't hurt someone who still calls him brother despite finding out they're not related. How can he hurt the baby he rescued eighteen years ago? How can he hurt the boy who thanked his parents for adopting him?
Donovan can't.
The young man sighs and looks up at the night sky. There aren't many stars because of the heavy light pollution. He has wasted the last six years of his life.
Bitter tears rolled down his cheeks. He suffered for nothing, something he willingly put himself through. If only time could rewind...
Unable to take it anymore, Donovan crouched to his knees and openly sobbed. Did he make the right decision?
So why does his heart hurt?
