It was when Odette was nine Adrian finally figured out about it— that Odette was given poison regularly.

By them, Adrian had grown to become mȧturė, more compared to those of his age, and despite Odette's protectiveness over him, the situation forced him to grow quickly.

When Josephine Maevius— maid responsible for delivering the milk to her— left after placing the drink on her table, Adrian instantly entered in.

Forgetting his politeness and respect, he didn't bother knocking on the door. Rather than his manners, Odette was rather worried about what could have caused his rash behaviour.

Without picking the glass up, she stared at the boy while he closed the door and walked over to her. On a closer inspection, she realized the child's face was gloomy, and he was close to crying as a frown was present on his face.

He bit on his lower lip, clenching his hand into a tight fist, and maintaining his eye contact with Odette, all of his grievances was visible on his features.

Odette felt a soft stab at her heart. "What's the matter?"

Without a reply, Odette got the answer when Adrian's eyes shifted to the glass of milk, and before Odette could explain, Adrian questioned, "Are you going to drink that?"

Adrian's voice was filled with pain. Odette was taken aback.

In the beginning, Odette continued to poison herself because how it made her feel pain— a sensation she was really intrigued with— but later on, she left it as a habit.

The pain didn't bother her anymore, and she didn't have the energy to deal with her mother. If she stopped with this, her mother would be sticking her head into her current life further.

She didn't want her current pace of life to be stained with her mother.

Out of words, Odette said, "Why? Is there something wrong?"

"You know, don't you, Lady Odette? The milk is poisoned. I heard the maids talk earlier. Isn't that why you cry out in night frequently? Why do you take it if you suffer this much?"

Constant aches went through Adrian's ċhėst while he thought of how much pain Odette went through. All those screams and mȯȧns of pain from her at night was enough to make him feel as if his ċhėst was being ripped apart.

Everytime, he was there to hug and comfort her. Throughout the night, he would be beside her and pat her back while wiping her sweat at the same time.

At that time, Odette indeed felt content and believed it wouldn't be bad for things to continue this way. She didn't take it as sacrificing herself or treating herself unjustly.

"Am I not fine after all this time?" Odette questioned.

Earlier in the hallway, Adrian heard how they badmouthed Odette as a monster while discussing how she was able to bear through his poison.

This wasn't the first time he heard others gossiping about Odette. Nonetheless, each time, he felt the same— if not, then more— clench in his ċhėst.

He wasn't naive enough to not know Odette's personality. Odette could be willful at times and recently, doesn't even bother with those around her— unless the situation turns to be unavoidable.

However, she was nothing compared to those workers who constantly looked on chances to mock their masters.

At times, Adrian didn't understand Odette didn't take care of the rude servants around the place when she had the ability to do so; it wasn't possible she didn't know of the gossips about her.

After they were getting paid this much to do their job, it wasn't much for them to keep their mouth shut and concentrate on getting their work done.

Odette chuckled.

"I am not joking!" Adrian solemnly claimed.

Before Odette was able to process it, Adrian picked up the glass of milk and asked, "Are you going to still drink it?"

Guilt— what Odette felt was close to that. It was funny to think about it for it was a emotion she went through once in a blue room; last time, when she experienced this wasn't a situation she could recall.

Seeing how Odette remained silent, Adrian took in a deep breath and placed the glass between his lips. As he started to drink the liquid, Odette was caught off guard.

Before thinking properly, Odette immediately got up and slapped the glass away from Adrian's hand. The glass slammed against the ground, breaking into multiple pieces.

As Odette's heart beat rapidly inside her ċhėst, she stared at Adrian with wide eyes, while the boy kept smiling at her.
