Special District 9
Chapter 116: Betrayal?
Yong Dong swiftly reorganized his thoughts to readjust his perception of the current situation.
“Everything is already laid out clearly. Are you so loyal to Yuan Hua as to be willing to die in vain for him?” Qin Yu said. “I’ll be frank with you. I want you to cleanse our reputation from the impacts of the fake medicine incident. As long as you cooperate with us, we can bury the hatchet and forget about everything that has happened before. But if you choose to go against us, I have no reason to stop Uncle Ma if he wants to fire at you to exact vengeance for his dead brothers. The choice is in your hands. Make up your mind.”
Holding tightly onto the phone, Yong Dong glanced in Yuan Hua’s direction before muttering in a softer tone, “They are eyeing me tightly at the moment. It’ll be hard for me to move.”
Qin Yu didn’t respond right away.
“Tell me how I should find you first,” Yong Dong added. “I’ll think about what you just said.”
Silence.
“Stop acting. I know that you have never thought of going through this trade,” Yong Dong was able to quickly grasp Qin Yu’s tempo, and he pressured on. “Tell me, what do you want me to do.”
Qin Yu pondered for a moment before issuing his instructions, “Hold onto the phone. I want you to walk 300 meters toward the road and turn left at the fork.”
“Got it.”
“Brother Dong, we only have one life. It isn’t worth giving it away for anyone else,” Qin Yu advised with a frown. “You can be certain that I’ll never make an appearance as long as there are dogs on your tail.”
After that, Qin Yu hung up the phone.
…
In the midst of the barren land.
Qin Yu gestured to Old Cat and said, “Head to where the fork is and tell Uncle Ma not to move yet.”
“Roger that,” Old Cat nodded.
At the same time, standing under the signage, Yong Dong shot a glance in Yuan Hua’s direction for a moment before he suddenly turned around and began walking away.
In the alley, Baldie frowned tightly as he remarked in bewilderment, “Did you see that? Yong Dong just received a call.”
“I saw it,” Yuan Hua said with a complicated look in his eyes. “Why didn’t he turn on the speakerphone after receiving the call?”
“I’m also a little perplexed. What does he mean by this?” Baldie suddenly felt very uncertain about the situation they were facing.
“Big brother.”
It was at this moment that Xiao Jiu suddenly came over from behind. He asked with an anxious voice, “Our men are all either on the field or in this alley. Do we follow Yong Dong or not? He’s going to leave our range of sight soon!”
Yuan Hua weighed his options for a moment before instructing, “The other party must be thinking of making a breakthrough via Yong Dong, but this area is simply too empty. There are no cars or people here. If we follow them, we’ll be exposed right away.”
Baldie took a look at the road before he suggested, “We can get the two cars at the back to take a detour and meet up with Yong Dong from the opposite side.”
“That can work,” Yuan Hua nodded in approval.
“I’ll get it done right away then!” Baldie replied before quickly making his way out of the alley.
Xiao Jiu stood by Yuan Hua’s side as he asked with a frown, “Big brother, do you think that it’s possible for Yong Dong to have other intentions in mind?”
“…!” A grim expression surfaced on Yuan Hua’s face, and he didn’t reply right away.
…
On the road.
Yong Dong advanced along the left side of the road in a pace that was neither fast nor slow. From time to time, he glanced backward to take a look.
A few minutes later, Yong Dong arrived at the fork. There, he stopped his feet.
Through the wireless microphone, Baldie’s voice kept buzzing through, “Yong Dong, say something! What did the other party tell you through the phone earlier? If you don’t talk to me, I can’t help you!”
Yong Dong scanned his surroundings without saying a word at all.
“Hello? Yong Dong! Can you hear my voice? At least say something!”
“Yong Dong, what the hell are you up to? How do we protect you if you don’t talk at all? What if we were to lose you?”
“…!”
Baldie shouted a few times through the walkie-talkie, but there was no response at all.
On the fork, Yong Dong wiped away the sweat on his forehead before holding up the phone Qin Yu had given him and called back.
Several seconds later.
“Hello?” Qin Yu’s voice sounded.
“If I walk toward the fork, will I be able to shake off the people behind me?” Yong Dong asked.
“You can,” Qin Yu replied with a nod. “Head a little further ahead, and you’ll see Fengbei’s emergency ration warehouses. There are quite a few alleys over there.”
“Where are you?” Yong Dong asked.
“I’m inside an alleyway there.”
“Don’t lie to me. Once I shake off those behind me, Old Yuan will immediately figure out my intentions,” Yong Dong reminded coldly. “If I were to die, there’ll be no one to clear up the fake medicine incident.”
“From now on, don’t hang up this phone and we’ll be able to meet in the alleyway,” Qin Yu replied authoritatively.
“Alright, let’s pull one over Old Yuan together,” Yong Dong said as he fumbled for his collar and threw away the microphone and earpiece into the snow. “I’ve already thrown it away. You should be able to see it.”
Qin Yu covered the phone and asked Old Cat, “Ask Guan Qi if he has thrown away his microphone.”
“He threw them away.” Old Cat was on a call as well, and he replied right away.
Qin Yu released his hand and told Yong Dong, “Turn left at the fork and run straight ahead. I’ll fetch you there.”
Right after Qin Yu said those words, Yong Dong immediately began running toward the fork, and he soon disappeared in the midst of the dark night.
…
On the car, Baldie heard the static sound coming from the walkie-talkie, and he immediately cursed furiously, “Goddamnit, Yong Dong! He got convinced by the other party!”
“Bro, what do we do now?” the driver asked anxiously.
“What else can we do? Hurry up and chase him! We can’t let Yong Dong get away!” Baldie shouted through the walkie-talkie. “Draw your guns. Prepare to engage the enemy!”
It was at that moment that a ringtone rang inside the car. Baldie immediately received the call and explained the situation concisely, “Old Yuan, Yong Dong has defected!”
Yuan Hua’s body stiffened instantly. His eyes reddened, and he roared at the top of his lungs, “Make sure to keep your sight on him! No matter what Yong Dong is up to, we can’t let them meet one another!”
“He has run into a fork. I’m currently chasing him.”
“Tell everyone to stop hiding and get moving!” Yuan Hua shouted to Xiao Jiu through another phone. “Hurry up!”
Several seconds later, seven cars dashed out from the alleys and charged right for the fork in the road.
…
On a nameless road.
The panting Yong Dong looked behind him as he shouted into the phone anxiously, “They’re catching up! How long more before I reach you?”
“Don’t panic, continue running. I can already see you,” Qin Yu said through the phone. “Once you reach the warehouses, you should be able to see a direction signage right away. We’re in the vicinity.”
“Brother, this escape means that I’ll never be able to return to Old Yuan’s side anymore,” Yong Dong said with a pale face. “Don’t play tricks on me, or else Old Ma will never be freed from the shadows of the fake medicine incident.”
“Brother Dong, you don’t need to be so worried. I wouldn’t go all out to plan all of this just to screwwith you,” Qin Yu replied gravely. “Continue running. I’ll have a car head over to get you, and we’ll leave right away.”
“Everything is already laid out clearly. Are you so loyal to Yuan Hua as to be willing to die in vain for him?” Qin Yu said. “I’ll be frank with you.
