Special District 9
Chapter 5: Even Death Would Offer Incense to the Buddha
On the ground, Qin Yu shook his head to regain his senses. With a mouth filled with the scent of alcohol, he turned to Old Cat and asked, “Are you fine?”
“Thank god Ol’ Three and the others came. We would have been doomed if we had engaged them alone. I never knew this, but Ol’ Three and the others are still quite brave after all…” Old Cat had yet to calm down from the shock yet, and he was still busy wiping away his perspiration.
Seeing that Old Cat was fine, Qin Yu pushed him away and swiftly scanned the surroundings. He then turned to the nearest colleague and called out to him, “Give me your gun.”
The other party was hiding behind a wooden desk, and he was looking at Qin Yu with eyes filled with fright. The earlier happenings had rattled his mind.
“Give me your gun!” Qin Yu whispered harshly once more.
The other party immediately snapped out of it. Without even thinking for an instant, he tossed the gun over to Qin Yu before continuing to squat behind the table, not moving at all.
The gun was labeled A2911, but it was modeled after M1911. It was just that it had been modified to increase the chamber capacity to allow for nine bullets. It was the gun reserved specially for the usage of the policemen in the frontline.
Qin Yu had never come into contact with this gun before; he had only seen it in a magazine before. Nevertheless, the structure of the gun and the grip felt familiar to him. After scanning the gun, he habitually took out the bullets to check inside before reloading them back in and releasing the safety engagement notch. He completed the entire set of motion smoothly in a breath.
With a gun in hand, Qin Yu slowly rose up a little and took two steps back in order to increase his area of scope. Using his left hand as a support, he decisively pulled the trigger.
Bang bang bang!
With a series of three gunshots, the head of the middle-aged man who threw the grenade earlier blasted open as he collapsed to the ground.
Qin Yu chose to kill him instead of injuring him. He made this decision as the enemy were all equipped with weapons, and they wouldn’t hesitate to do anything in order to protect themselves. Any mercy shown to them could potentially place other passers-by or his comrades in danger.
After firing three guns, Qin Yu immediately squatted back down without bothering to look around him.
Bang bang bang!
Just as he had thought, a stream of bullets flew toward him in the next moment, striking the wall. Through the sound of the firing, Qin Yu was able to discern the location of the enemy. As if a bolt of lightning, he assumed the Weaver stance and dashed outward to shoot at them. However, those shots landed empty.
(It’s a slightly bent forward stance with two hands on the gun, pointing in front.)
The two fixers appeared to be quite well-trained as well. One of them kicked open the window and crashed his way out of the restaurant whereas the other covered him.
The reason why they didn’t choose to leave by the door was because they weren’t certain whether there were other policemen camping outside to arrest them. On the other hand, leaving through the window would catch those camping outside others off guard, buying them some time to escape.
Seeing that the two remaining fixers in the room had escaped, Qin Yu didn’t give chase. Instead, he rushed up the second floor with his gun.
On the first floor, Ol’ Three was sitting on the ground, holding onto his bottom with his left hand. At the same time, he looked at Qin Yu, who killed a fixer without the slightest hint of hesitation, in shock.
“Holy, is that really Qin Yu?” Old Cat exclaimed in shock as he rose up from his hiding spot. He turned to Ol’ Three and the others and shouted, “What are you sitting there for? Chase them! Help Qin Yu, he’s alone at the moment.”
Ol’ Three looked at Old Cat with an expression that could almost kill. He felt that nothing good could ever come out with associating himself with that darned Li Fugui with the rotten luck that he had.
…
The second floor.
Qin Yu rushed in the direction of where the back door was located and looked out of the window. Through the glass, he could see that the short middle-aged man dragging the young lady across the street, into the alley amidst a cluster of old buildings.
He contemplated thrice before cursing with gritted teeth, “Damn! They don’t have any receiver, right? If it’s just one person, I still can try pushing it a little!”
Guang dang!
Qin Yu opened the window, and a cold draft gushed into the room. He leaped out through the window.
Landing on the ground, Qin Yu exerted every ounce of strength within his body and dashed across the road within less than three seconds. He camped outside the alley alone, raised his gun up slightly, and pulled the trigger.
Bang bang!
Two loud gunshots rang in the air.
Not too far away, the short middle-aged man heard the gunshot and immediately pulled the young lady into the shadows as he tried to control his own breathing.
“You’re from the Development District, aren’t you?” Qin Yu shouted.
The short middle-aged man lowered his head to check his own gun as he replied with nonfluent Chinese, “That’s right. Out there, there are plenty of people starving to death on the streets. We can only find food to eat in the cities. When did you set your eyes on us?”
“We didn’t. It was a coincidence,” Qin Yu replied honestly.
“Can you spare me? I have notes in my bag. Just give the word, and it’ll all be yours,” the short middle-aged man said.
Qin Yu was silent for a moment before he replied, “It’s cold outside, I get that. But with the uniform I wear, I can’t just turn a blind eye to this. You can keep the notes, but leave the woman behind.”
The short middle-aged man hesitated for a moment before saying, “I have gold in my pocket. You take the gold and the notes, I’ll take the woman.”
“I can’t do that,” Qin Yu replied decisively.
“… Alright, I’ll leave the woman behind,” the short middle-aged man hesitated for a moment before pushing the young lady in front. “You, walk over slowly. Three seconds later, run. If you don’t follow my words, I’ll shoot you.”
Qin Yu licked his lips as he looked intently into the alley and said, “Come.”
The young lady was hesitant for a split instant before she began walking forward. At the same time, the sound of messy footsteps echoed within the alley.
Three seconds later, the young lady quickened her footsteps.
Qin Yu hesitated for a moment before walking into the alley, shouting, “Quick!”
The young lady looked Qin Yu with an anxious look in her eyes as she shouted in a panic, “He is still there!”
Right after those words were spoken, the short middle-aged man walked out of the shadows and pointed his gun at the entrance of the alley.
Bang bang bang!
A series of gunshots echoed loudly in the night. The young lady frightfully squatted to the ground as she clutched her hair and screamed.
A second later, a dull thud echoed within the alley. The short middle-aged man had collapsed to the ground.
Qin Yu stood in front of the young lady warily, not walking into the alley at all. Instead, he unhesitatingly pointed his gun down toward the collapsed fixer’s head and shot another two more times.
“AHHH!”
The young lady covered her ears as she continued screaming.
Qin Yu didn’t pay her any heed. While holding his gun, he walked over to the short middle-aged man and kicked his head. It was only then that he realized that there was a laceration on his shoulder from a rapid bullet brushing him by. He heaved a sigh of relief as he cursed, “You shrewd rat, you left me scared for a moment.”
“Did you get him?”
At the entrance of the alley, a familiar voice sounded.
Qin Yu turned around and saw Ol’ Three standing beneath a dim lamppost, clutching his own bottom. Qin Yu asked, “Where are Old Cat and the others?”
“They are chasing over there too. Those scoundrels ran to the left side,” Ol’ Three replied while breathing a little heavily. “You killed the one over here?”
Qin Yu looked at Ol’ Three for a moment before walking up to him. He first scanned the surroundings quickly before abruptly stretching his hand forth to pull the latter into the alley.
“What the heck are you doing?” Ol’ Three was stunned.
“You wanted to do something to me, huh?” Qin Yu asked with a nonchalant look on his face.
Ol’ Three was stunned for a moment before he finally recalled that he had come to the restaurant with the intention of taking care of Qin Yu.
“You said you wanted to talk with me earlier. What do you want to talk about? Let’s settle it here,” Qin Yu asked with narrowed eyes.
“What do you mean by that?”
Qin Yu shoved his gun against Ol’ Three’s head. “You son of a bitch, have you ever been to the Development District before?! Even Death itself would have to offer incense to the Buddha before raiding a military ration convoy, but I have singlehandedly killed my way out of that hellhole. Do I look like I’ll need you to teach me the rules around here? Huh?!”
Ol’ Three was stunned.
Bang!
A gunshot sounded, and Ol’ Three’s soul nearly dissipated along with the sound.
A few seconds later, Ol’ Three collapsed to the ground, gasping for air. His eyes were widened round.
Qin Yu dropped the gun onto Ol’ Three’s body and said, “We still need to handle dangerous jobs together in the future. Don’t mess with me. I don’t know who I’ll point my gun to if I get scared.”
After that, Qin Yu walked to the young lady’s side and lowered his head to look at her, saying, “You sure are unlucky to meet such vicious kidnappers, missy.”
…
Half an hour later, in the hospital subordinate to the Police Bureau.
Ol’ Three was lying on the bed when a call came in. He picked it up and greeted, “Platoon Commander Yuan.”
“Where are you?” Yuan Ke asked with a cold voice.
“I am in the hospital.”
“Did you just encounter a case in a restaurant earlier?” Yuan Ke asked again.
“Yeah, I did.” Upon hearing those words, Ol’ Three suddenly began to brag excitedly with his saliva flying everywhere. “We were patrolling on the streets when we met some scoundrels inside Second Sis’ restaurant. I immediately realized that something was amiss, so I went to check their identity. But that bastard took out his gun right away and pointed it at me! I knew at once that it was a huge case, so I gathered our brothers together to get them…
“We managed to get the main culprit and one of his accomplices, but two of them still got away. That’s no problem though. The Police Bureau has already issued a warrant for their capture…
“Heh, Platoon Commander Yuan, I heard that the main culprit is a person named Matsushita or something. That fellow has been wanted for four years now, and there are many murder cases to his name… Don’t you think that our brothers have done really well this time around? We actually managed to find and get him, closing all of those cases at once!
“Platoon Commander Yuan, you must get a few goods words in for me before Superintendent Li. Criminals like them are usually darned good at hiding themselves, normal policemen wouldn’t be able to get them at all! I have been a Tier-2 Police Officer for two years now, so shouldn’t I be promoted soon? This achievement is an honor for our Squad 1 and the whole Police Bureau!”
“… Honor? You fucking twat!”
“Platoon Commander Yuan, why are you scolding me all of a sudden?”
“How did your mother give birth to a fucking twat like you? I really want to put a bullet through your head right now…”
“?!?!” Ol’ Three was utterly dumbfounded.
“Matsushita is a fixer my brother hired! He was already going to finish up his job, but you managed to mess it all up with your bravery!” Yuan Ke roared through the phone. “You really are a good-for-nothing!”
“No, that’s not it. Platoon Commander Yuan… Let me explain…” After a moment of shock, Ol’ Three hurriedly explained anxiously, “I was just bragging earlier. Let me tell you the truth this time around… I only headed to the restaurant to beat him up Qin Yu, but I didn’t expect to meet Old Cat there too. He said that there was a case…”
“Du du!”
