The Emperor’s Angel of Death

#2900 - General Dream

Chapter 2904: A General's Dream

Seeing Hayes continuously denying it, Little Ferton kept pestering him relentlessly.

"Oh come on, I heard about it, Uncle, weren't you called away by the Astartes? And you went to the command center? Met that important person?"

"Hmm? How did you know?"

"I'm always well-informed, so it's true, right?"

Hayes rolled his eyes, took out a piece of dry, hard flatbread from a backpack. This food, called naan, had become their staple food ever since they arrived in the Ecclesiarchy. Combined with heated, thick canned soup, and some unique spices, it was quite appetizing and good for the stomach.

"So what if I did? It's just meeting someone I know."

As he spoke, Hayes tore off a piece of flatbread and dipped a small piece into the bubbling canned soup, pinching a piece of meat with two fingers, and stuffing it into his mouth along with the bread.

It had to be said that the Ant Cow canned meat was indeed much more delicious than other canned meats, no wonder it was supplied to senior officers.

"It's that Chapter Master you took a photo with, right?"

When Little Ferton's hand quietly reached for the canned meat, Hayes slapped the back of his hand hard.

"I've been hungry for half a day, what's with you kids..."

"Uncle, look, you're even eating Ant Cow canned meat, stop lying to me."

"This is a military camp, how many times have I told you, you need to address people by their ranks! Being so casual in front of your superiors, do you have any discipline? And what am I lying about, don't go making wild accusations, slandering an officer like that is punishable."

"Co~mmander~"

Little Ferton shook his shoulder again.

"Look, even our regimental commander might not know an Astartes big shot, and even the division commander probably isn't qualified to meet that person. You've not only gained the appreciation of Commander Bakhram, but you also know a Chapter Master, and you've even met that important person, isn't your promotion to regimental commander a certainty? Maybe you'll even become a division commander directly!"

His words immediately garnered the approval of the people around him, these were all kids from the same company, and they all regarded Hayes as an uncle.

"That's right, that's right, Uncle Hayes is going to be a general soon!"

"We heard that above generals, there are marshals!"

"I'll be your bodyguard when you become one, Uncle!"

The boy's words left Hayes speechless.

"Ugh, you guys."

Hayes chewed as he waved the fork in his hand.

"Don't go spreading these words around, especially not everywhere, there are too many ears here, it'll attract trouble if it gets out."

"Uncle, you're too humble, it's not like I'm the only one who knows about this, so many people at the regimental headquarters were watching at the time. Uncle~ I'm serious, when are you taking office?"

"Go, go, go, if you have nothing to do, go back to your tent, don't stir up nonsense here, it's affecting my meal."

"Regimental Commander, my good Regimental Commander, so when you met that important person, did he say anything?"

"Tsk, didn't say anything, just asked about the situation. I'm just an ordinary person, and a disabled one at that, missing an arm and a leg, only got one eyeball left, can't even read many words, and I don't have any illustrious battle achievements, you'd know even if you thought about it with your butt, how could I be appointed to an important command position just because I met him once? And a promotion of three ranks, that's not reasonable, nor logical. Besides, I'm already tired enough managing you guys, I really can't manage a regiment, let alone a regiment, not even a battalion. If you really have ideas about developing in the military, then work honestly, don't have so many strange ideas, be more steady, and maybe I can pull some strings and get you into officer school for further studies in the future. I'm not counting on myself."

"I don't think so, Uncle, you're doing great, look at the other companies, none of them have the combat power of our company, and everyone admires you, you're just... what's that word my dad said, oh, right, a natural-born general! Much stronger than those who came out of military academies!"

"Ha, you, I'm not some natural-born general, you're the stubborn one. Stop daydreaming, have the wounded been taken care of?"

"They've all been taken care of, I've also collected the medicines and first aid supplies and distributed them."

"Everyone's tired, go and rest for a bit, there might be combat missions soon, then you'll be standing and dozing off again, go, go, go."

With a combination of coaxing and shooing, Hayes got the boys out of the tent, then cleaned up the leftover trash, spread out his cot, and lay down on it.

"A general, huh?"

Although he didn't take Little Ferton's nonsense to heart at the time, when he was alone, Hayes couldn't help but feel some ripples in his heart.

With his left arm pillowed behind his head, Hayes stared at the lighting ball hanging from the top of the tent, and his mind involuntarily conjured up the scene of him wearing a gorgeous military dress uniform, holding a command saber, standing on a huge super-heavy tank, surrounded by banners like clouds, and thousands of troops.

"Sigh."

With a soft sigh, he turned over, closed his eyes, and drifted off to sleep.

In a daze, Hayes suddenly felt someone pushing his back, accompanied by urgent voices.

"Company Commander, Company Commander."

"Hmm?"

Hayes turned over, and in a blur, saw the anxious face of the signaler, followed by the ear-piercing alarms and calls echoing outside the tent.

With a jolt, he jumped straight out of bed and grabbed the helmet and weapon hanging on the side.

"What's going on?"

"The regiment has issued a combat mission, we need to go to the defense zone immediately!"

"Quick! Go and gather the others!"

Hayes put on his helmet and walked out of the tent, and at this moment, all kinds of sounds mixed into a chaotic song. He raised his head and saw the bubble-like barrier in the sky flickering. The Tyranid large flying creatures, like vultures seeing prey, were frantically gathering in the sky, constantly attacking the void shield. At the same time, a large number of gargoyles were even passing through the void shield directly with their flesh, albeit at a slower speed, but what awaited them was dense rain of bullets and laser storms, as well as volley-fired airburst rockets.

At the same time, heavy artillery and heavy tanks were also roaring, and the shells they fired set off a series of explosive ripples in the distance.

Everywhere within sight was filled with busy running soldiers.

"Hurry! Hurry! Assemble! Assemble!"

"Check all heavy equipment! Take the ammunition! Where are the transport vehicles!"

Hayes loudly organized his company. In less than five minutes, the company boarded armored transport vehicles and arrived at a garden on the west side of Snow Palace. There was a three-meter-high wall here, and outside the wall was an almost vertical cliff.

When they arrived, the battle had already begun. The other companies in the regiment had already built a buffer embankment with sandbags and other things, and the soldiers were standing on the buffer embankment and shooting.

"Quick, quick, quick!"

Hayes strode to the area they were responsible for, and then looked down.

He saw countless ripper and termagant climbing up from the poisonous fog below the cliff. Their limbs seemed to have undergone special evolution, becoming thinner, but with more adhesion, like the legs of some kind of arthropod, and there were four more lower limbs. They surged upwards like a swarm of frenzied spiders.
