“Fire!”
At the command, guns roared, and the foremost Tyranid creatures were instantly torn apart like punctured balloons, their carapaces shattered and fluids splattering.
But soon, another type of Tyranid emerged.
Smaller than the Warrior, it possessed a slender, elongated body with a snake-like tail covered in barbs, enabling rapid climbing on steep cliffs. Its forelimbs were enormous, resembling the crushing claws of a Tyrant Guard. As it moved, it held these limbs before it, forming a thick shield, impervious to most light weaponry.
“What is that? Another new creature? The Tyranids are evolving too fast!”
Stunned by the Tyranids' evolutionary speed, Hayes yelled:
“Rocket launchers! Take them out!”
Rocket launchers were standard squad weapons, so when Hayes gave the order, over a dozen armor-piercing rockets shot forth, followed by violent explosions. The new Tyranids fell screaming into the churning sea of toxic mist.
“Another new Tyranid. These damned things are almost never the same.”
As company commander, Hayes directed the fight while capturing footage of the new Tyranid creatures with a recording device, uploading it to the regimental headquarters, which then forwarded it to the command center.
Within ten minutes, a report on the new Tyranids appeared before Sorskyan, simultaneously transmitted to the Biologis Magi, who designated them 'Serpent Shields,' a variant of the Tyranid Serpent. Subsequently, a large quantity of armor-piercing weapons—primarily armor-piercing rockets, small autocannons, and plasma guns—were distributed to the companies below.
Hayes' company was also urgently issued an autocannon and an entire Centaur transport of ammunition, all armor-piercing incendiary rounds, specifically for engaging large Tyranid units.
However, while the frontline soldiers only needed to focus on killing the enemy, Sorskyan in the command center had much more to consider. The appearance of these Serpent Shields, while not triggering a major crisis, undoubtedly depleted the already strained ammunition reserves. Moreover, the slain Tyranids fell into the abyss, making them easily recoverable.
The emergence of these creatures indicated the Tyranids were determined to grind them down until they ran out of ammunition.
At this point in the battle, there was little Sorskyan could do but wait for Malakin to return with the fleet.
Of course, he had a backup plan in case of an emergency, a last resort—
If Malakin couldn't hold the line and return, the Bone Kingdom's fleet would arrive, using its fleet to assault the Tyranid Hive Fleet, at least destroying the Hive Ships.
But this was a last resort. Using it would likely cause endless trouble and prematurely expose his hidden strength to various powers.
As for the Eternal Court, it was out of the question. Using it would easily reveal his hand, and with the Deathwatch present, Sorskyan didn't have the energy to deal with the endless Inquisitors.
To ease the pressure on the front lines, Sorskyan organized dedicated hunting squads to target Tyranid node creatures, and this squad consisted of only two people.
“Here it comes.”
In the calm voice, a Warrior Prime charged forward with some smaller Warriors. This Warrior Prime seemed to specialize in long-range energy attacks, sporting a creature with its body bent into the shape of a cannon—the bioweapon's massive proboscis was rooted with tentacles, and slender legs gripped the wrists of the symbiotic monster carrying it. A spinal cord extended from its rear to the Warrior Prime's elbow, connecting them. A slack pouch pulsated sickeningly beneath it.
As it neared its target, its throbbing accelerated. Despite the pervasive toxic gas, its vision was unaffected. The Warrior Prime immediately raised the living weapon and opened fire.
But in the next second, a figure swiftly brushed past the Warrior Prime's side, dodging its attack.
Realizing the enemy was nearby, the Warrior Prime reacted with surprising speed, raising a scythe-like claw to stab at the figure, but the figure evaded it. In a flash of cold light, it severed the bioweapon, then grabbed the spines on the Warrior Prime's back, easily toppling it. Raising a longsword in one hand, it aimed at the joint between the armor plates and plunged the weapon deep inside.
With a loud crack, the blade pierced the outer armor layer. Although there was a layer of erodible cartilage beneath the exoskeleton, it did not slow its momentum, plunging straight into the soft flesh below.
The Warrior Prime howled and leaned back, but its head soon left its neck.
“Fourth one.”
Amon looked down at the dead Warrior Prime, now unusually wearing a helmet. This was Sorskyan's requirement, to avoid being seen by those who shouldn't.
Then he felt a surge of psychic energy. The Warrior bugs swarmed him from all directions, but with a crackle, psychic lightning erupted from Kai's outstretched palm, striking the creatures and burning horrific holes in their bodies. The powerful Tyranids screamed and died.
Completing this, Kai turned around, leaving behind a field of smoking Tyranid corpses.
“This kind of work reminds me a little of the Great Crusade.”
Kai, also wearing a helmet, said with a light voice.
“But I never fought alongside the Emperor's Children before Horus launched the rebellion.”
“If the Great Crusade had such enemies, the Human Empire probably wouldn't have erupted into internal strife so easily, don't you think?”
“Hmm, there's some truth to that. When external enemies basically disappear, humans will look for opponents internally. Your point makes sense in a way.”
“You always have been.”
“Sounds like you've completely embraced being human.”
“Isn't that what humans should say?”
The two men's words seemed casual, but they were actually testing each other.
“I'm curious, Amon, what do you want? Do you really think Sorskyan will become a god and take you along for the ride?”
“Kai, don't show off your shallow insights in front of me.”
Amon twisted his wrist, his longsword drawing an arc, his eyes watching the other man with a mocking smile.
“What did you trade for there? A warp demon wouldn't tie you down. I can see your expression. I've seen many people like you before. Let me guess what you wished for. Hmm, it's definitely not to save your so-called brothers. You don't consider yourself one of the Thousand Sons anymore. You never had any sense of belonging to the Legion, so the most likely thing is—”
