The Vampire's Bride
Chapter 9 - Should Have Her As Soon As Possible
The air at the rooftop was stagnant. It was heavy and motionless. Two students were sitting there. One was calmly opening the lunch box as the other sat on her heels, nervously avoided his direction.
She did not complain when he got her lunch. After all, it was prepared by his people and he did not have any on him so it's only right for her to let him have it.
She felt a piercing gaze coming from the man besides her. She hesitantly turned her head to look at him. The moment she did, she was greeted by a pair of... angry eyes?
He's angry?
"Wha — — Is there a problem, Master Orpheus?"
Leo stared for a while, as if contemplating about something. He shook his head and sighed before changing the topic. "What do you think?"
Mallory tilted her head in confusion as she listened as Leo continued, "The Night Class... you don't have to worry. Since I'm there, I'll be sure to protect you. You can just focus on your studies. Besides, by now, everyone will know that you're related to me."
"Only in school..." Mallory's mumblings was heard by Leo who chuckled.
He leaned in and whispered, "Do you want it to be known outside the school? Your words are my command, Milady."
Luckily, Leo knew when to stop. He explained that he was just joking as he patted her head.
"Don't worry, I'm just joking. But if you ever tell me to, I'd do it surely."
Just as Mallory was about to reject his offer, they heard a loud deafening sound. Leo was surprised and had his eyes wide open as he looked at Mallory. The latter had her head down. Her ears were red from embarrassment as she realized where the sound came from — her stomach.
Leo picked his spoon and brought it near her mouth. The smell made Mallory gulped. Why is it that his food always smells delicious?
She could not help but cry. All the food she had outside were all... lower than average. You could say that she's picky with her food.
"Eat. I already asked Brian to prepare enough food for the two of us so you should, at least, eat your share."
Mallory shook her head but the next second she could taste the food. Apparently, her mouth had betrayed her.
Why be a traitor? We've been together since birth yet you betrayed me?
As she mentally complained with the traitor, she sensed Leo relaxing. She looked into his eyes and noticed that he was nervous.
"What's wrong Master Orpheus?"
Leo was stunned for a moment before asking, "What do you mean?"
"You were nervous just now."
Leo was surprised to see that the girl noticed the changes in him even though it was hidden well.
Then he remembered that his father had once told him that once both partners found each other, it was possible that they will not accept each other.
But once they did, their hearts and souls would be connected with each other more than they had with others. They would become inseparable.
His eyes softened as he thought that Mallory had accepted him as her soulmate. Little did he know that that was not the case with her.
Mallory looked into his eyes to find an answer but was met with serenity. It was only then that she realized that reading Leo was harder to read than reading her mother, Mikva.
"Say, Mallory," Leo spoke as he fed Mallory once more, "Where will you go?"
Mallory, who looked like a puppy munching, tilted her head as if asking what he meant.
"Will you go back to your family's home?"
Her eyes widened for a second before realizing her situation. She had been too focused on Leo and the offer that she had forgotten about her family.
She lowered her head as she thought deeply.
They will not let me go so easily. Surely when I come home, they'll punish me. I heard dad is outside the country for now but worst case scenario is that he is back. I have to appease them somehow or else they'll tell my father.
But they did not hurt Master Orpheus which means that Master Orpheus is capable of protecting me. Just like that he could become my shield.
... my shield?
Mallory, herself, was surprised with her thoughts. She glanced at the handsome man besides her.
Maybe... just maybe... he could help me escape them...
Mallory let out a sighand laughed silently. For as long as she could remember, she had been wanting to escape her family. And maybe Leo was the key to it all. But she's not the type of person who would just use others for her own gain.
After all, which servant had the guts to turn their backs to their masters when they did not have a death wish? Surely not Mallory.
She knew, more than anyone else in the world, that sooner and not later, Leo would toss her aside... just like the rest.
Why should she attach herself to Leo? Why would she wait for Leo to make the move if she could do it first?
"I'll be going back. In the end, they are still my family. I have to go back to where I came from."
Leo's mood became foul as he heard her reply. Mallory quickly tried to pacify him, "But I'm grateful for your help. If you hadn't protected me, I would be dead a long time. Thank you, Master Orpheus!"
Upon hearing the praise evident in her voice, Leo was delighted. But when he heard her calling him with such formality, his countenance darkened.
He pinched his nose bridge and suppressed the urge to get mad. He continued feeding her, not replying to her answer.
...
As he watched Mallory, he suddenly remembered the principal.
As soon as Mallory left the office, Leo spoke with the principal.
"Sir, what do you think?"
The principal was quite for a moment before nodding. "En. She is a rare type. A halfing that smelled strong... I almost mistook her for a certain... vampire." He paused as he looked at Leo, "And I believe we are on the same page."
"Yes, sir."
Leo replied indifferently, making the principal to laugh wryly. "Obviously she cannot be that person 'cause we've seen it already... the dead body."
The atmosphere became heavy as both recalled a certain person.
It wasn't until the principal heaved a sigh that the silence broke. "Young Master Orpheus, you'd better take good care of your health. I heard that your time is nearing... it would be better if you found your partner already. If you need help in finding your partner, just tell me and I'll gladly help you."
Leo looked at the sky blankly before replying with an indescribable expression, "You're right... I should have her as soon as possible."
...
The bell rang, Leo and Mallory quickly went back to their classroom. The moment the pair entered the room, everyone became quiet and stared as they walked to their seats.
Mallory felt like nervous and scared. Every step she made felt like time was slowing down. Her seat felt farther than usual. She held her head down low as she hugged the lunch box close to her c.h.e.s.t.
He walked with an aura of a king, making everyone submit to him.
Soon, whispers were heard coming from all sides of the room...
"They went back together..."
"That's Azazel... and the freak..."
"I wonder what they did during lunch..."
"Hey, did you see them in the canteen?"
"No. Did you?"
"I also didn't."
"Well, they were not in the boy's C.R."
Mallory heard the last comment loud and clear. Her lips twitched as she furrowed her brows. Since when did the rumors escalated to something so... different and out of hands?
"Why the hell would you check in there?"
"Oh, you know... just curious."
The boy slightly laughed as he smiled smugly as he spoke. Mallory felt annoyed by his actions but decided not to do anything. After all, she was not in the right position to do so. She's still being looked down by everyone. No wait — almost everyone in the room.
*Thud*
Mallory's trail of thoughts were broken when she heard a banging sound at her right. She slowly turned her head with the rest of the class.
Leo had his feet on top of the table. He lifted his eyes from the book he was reading and his gaze swept through everyone, stopping at the boy who commented about such inappropriate things.
He spoke slowly but his tone was just like any other times. Despite that, everyone felt cold and threatened by what Leo said.
"Curiosity kills the cat. Oh, and also, only dumb people believe in what fellow humans of the same kind says... Even if they throw sh*t on their faces."
Leo dropped his serious tone and said in a jokingly manner, "Isn't that right?"
This was enough to silence the class.
Everyone could not help but feel sorry for the boy that had become the center of Leo's words. Mallory wanted to say something because she felt like there were other ways to deal with it but couldn't find the right words. In the end, she slightly pouted her lips as she looked at her desk.
Leo noticed his partner looking unsatisfied. He thought about it for a while before realizing why. This girl... I did it for her sake but she's disappointed? She's actually siding with him?
The boy felt Leo's gaze got stronger but when he turned to look at Leo, the murderous gaze was gone. Then he heard Leo's voice, "But if you want to know where we were, we were eating at the rooftop. We obviously don't want people to ruin our appetite – or at least my appetite. I don't want anything to spoil the view... and no, we are not in a relationship where we could just go the men's restroom to do whatever you guys were thinking."
The boy who commented: "..."
The student who got his chair taken by Leo: "..."
Mallory: *cough cough*
The teacher who just entered: "..."
The whole class: "..." If you're going to flirt, please do not do it in such a way!
Mallory was sent to a coughing fit as she glared on Leo who looked as if he was innocent. Master Orpheus! Please spare my life!
"Eh... ahem! Good afternoon class. Please go back to your seats." The teacher coughed awkwardly as he tried to catch everyone's attention.
It took them a moment before they ran back to their seats. All of them were able to go back to their places except one... The student who got his chair taken by Leo.
"U-umm... A-Azazel?"
"What?" Leo did not even bother to look at him as he casually read his book.
"T-the teacher is already here..."
"So?"
Seeing that Kelvin was scared at Leo, Mallory gathered the courage to speak to him. After all, even she was scared of the Notorious Azazel.
She leaned closer and whispered in an audible tone only heard by the two, "M-Master Orpheus, you should go back to your seat. The class cannot start unless you return... I think."
By the end of the sentence, Leo emitted a scary aura. He slowly looked at Mallory and raised an eyebrow. Are you telling me you don't want me to sit besides you?
Mallory forced herself to stay calm even though she knew that she just angered him. For some reasons, Mallory could tell what Leo was thinking.
She turned her head to Kelvin and said in a gentle but lower tone, "I think that it's better if you sit at the vacant chair. It's nearer to the board so you won't have a hard time with the lessons... what do you think?"
Leo's scary aura disappeared as he spoke, "That's fine by me. You could sit on my chair."
Everyone felt their blood gone cold. Kelvin quickly ran towards Leo's seat as he mouth a small thank you to Mallory, who in return, nodded her head as an acknowledgement.
"Okay class. Open your books on page 185. Can anyone tell me what they have researched for our next topic?"
Everyone else couldn't help but glance from time to time at the back where the two were openly displaying their affections for each other... well at least one was.
As the lesson continued, Leo moved closer to Mallory by an inch then waited for a few seconds...
Then another inch...
And another...
Until they were literally next to each other...
"U-um... Master Orpheus..."
"Call me Leo."
Mallory scooted to the edge of her seat as she asked quietly, "Is something wrong?"
Leo kept quiet before glancing at his desk. "No. It's just that my book is at my table. So let me see yours."
Mallory slowly pushed her book to the center of the two tables as she innerly cried, 'Master, please spare me... You don't have to be close to me just for the book. In fact please get the book and move to the other side... I want to have some distance... Aiya~ are the Gods angry at me?'
