Episode 87: The Work of the Beasts
At the foot of Westlaw Hill, Ray frees the elite, beastly slaves of Luke's Holy King.
We've already freed about five hundred people who hit half, but the Beasts can only live their lives until then, just waiting for Ray's orders.
"I have a good idea," said military bureaucrat Carlo Parenti, seconded by the Holy King's Palace, beginning to speak with a serious look when their work was troubled beyond the protection of the Holy Kings and other important figures.
"It seems to expose the disgrace within us, but injustice now prevails in the Church and the Holy King's Palace. They only think of themselves when they say that the country itself will perish as it is. It is imperative that things like this should happen again, if we let such people wander off. Why not expose injustice and solemnize discipline? The beasts will have easy access to evidence."
Ray tried to raise his voice in favour of the proposal, but executive bishop Maggioni Gastaldi, who was beside him, immediately spoke out against it.
"I'm not against exposing injustice per se, but isn't this a good time?"
As for him with a scratch on his tibia, he feared his injustice would be revealed. That's why I pinched my mouth trying to circumvent Parenti's suggestion.
"What do you mean, Executive Bishop Gastaldi?" confirms Parenti as he narrows his eyes and intimidates.
"Beginning under the Archbishop, most have not heard the words of Lord Arklight. Being manipulated by evil gods and uncovering and punishing injustice without listening to your words can deprive you of the opportunity to reflect on yourself. Some people will reflect on themselves and correct the injustice after having heard what Master Arklight has said. Regardless, I think those who are to be fixed without reflection should be relentlessly excused, but given our response to His Majesty the Holy King earlier, I would fool myself into thinking that it would be contrary to Lord Arklight's thoughts."
Ray replies, "Right," but sees Gastaldi speaking quickly and wonders if he just doesn't want to be exposed for his wrongdoing.
(I really don't trust this guy. Lord Parenti has strong feelings for his country, so there are parts he can trust even if he doesn't agree with me. But this guy just seems to think about being born...)
Parenti suddenly struck a hand with bread. And he said out loud, "Wonderful!," praises Gastaldi.
Parenty was surprised to see Ray looking at Gastaldi and thought he could take advantage of the situation.
"The opinion of Executive Bishop Gastaldi is exactly in line with Lord Arklight's thoughts. Surely we can't just expose injustice. It is truly wonderful that your lord should be given the opportunity to reflect."
Gastaldi's idea was against uncovering and punishing the injustice at a stage where he had not heard Ray, but Parenty deliberately misinterpreted that after uncovering the injustice he should be allowed to hear Ray's words and give him an opportunity for reflection.
I turn my gaze to Ray after praising Gastaldi.
"Lord Gastaldi fully understands what Lord Arklight thinks. I do not have that authority, but I need a certain status in order to uncover the injustice of the denomination. How about getting him elected archbishop?
Gastaldi was surprised by Parenti's abrupt suggestion and never realized that his own words had been denied.
And the thought stops altogether when the status of archbishop is presented.
Ray was also surprised by the abruptness, but instantly understood the purpose of Parenti.
(Don't think about Mr. Parenty being awesome. I'm trying to get the highly greedy executive bishops to fish in position to expose the injustice of the Church and direct the hatred of the Archbishops... how much do I hate people to do that...)
Parenty noticed Ray's distress.
"Master Arklight is kind. Lord Gastaldi, I wonder if it would be all right for you to give him the task of resenting the Archbishop."
Gastaldi agrees immediately that "I'll take care of it" for this word.
As if he had forgotten his opinions earlier, etc., only the word in his mind that he could be Archbishop is enlarged, and his exaltation is on his face.
Ray looked at the look on his face and thought again that Gastaldi was not worthy of credit.
(I knew I couldn't trust this guy. The word "before the roots of your tongue dry" is for this guy...)
But Ray reconsidered.
(This person would do anything in exchange for status. Then you should be happy enough to face the Archbishop instead of me. Well, let's do enough to keep an escort on him so he doesn't lose his life... and I remember hearing in Imperial Capital about Bishop Gastaldi being promoted to executive bishop. I totally forgot...)
Ray grins at Gastaldi when he nods meaningfully at Parenty.
"I didn't know you were going to be an executive bishop. I apologize for calling you in your previous title," he says, bowing his head.
"We don't need an apology because we don't care," he says hastily, "but there was plenty of room on that face.
Ray tried to lift him even more,
"As you can see from today's work, I think Lord Gastaldi deserves a more important position. I can't do anything about the status of the Church right now, but if you'll move forward with the reform, I'd like to reward you for that work to the best of my ability."
"Thank you for your words!" Gastaldi lays flat.
"I have a favor to ask of Lord Parenti."
"What is it like?
"We need to protect the Executive Bishop of Gastaldi. Could you please put the beasts on and adopt a complete system (...)"
"I accept," he says, bowing his head aloud, but Parenti was impressed in his heart.
(Are you saying that you are not just clean? That's just what they used to call a "white marshal”. Instead of using the word "escort”, you said “complete system”. You're telling me to keep an eye on Gastaldi with a "full attitude”. If he takes the reform of the denomination seriously, that's fine. If we are to be taken in by the Archbishops, I guess it means eliminating them together. He's pretty strong...)
When I think about it that much, I realize that this applies to me.
(... This is something I can also say. So I'm not allowed to fail, either? You ordered me to realize that. He's horrible in a different way than under the Archbishop... but that's fine. Because this is my only chance to make my dreams come true when I was younger...)
I overestimated him because I only know about Ray by hearsay. Sure, Ray was going to take advantage of Gastaldi, but he didn't think that bad.
"Will Lord Parenti also need the status he deserves in order to carry out his reforms," Ray replied immediately.
"I have a comforting ally, His Majesty the Holy King. Reform of the Holy King's Palace is possible with His Majesty's help. Of course, a successful dawn would appreciate a worthy assessment of the work, but it is not necessary now"
Parenti immediately said no. Because I thought it was a stepping stone to myself.
"I will tell His Majesty the Holy King that later," Ray replies, but was reviewing Parenti.
(This guy has eyes for people. I know exactly what I hate. [M] I know you have ambitions, but you're competent and you convey a desire to reform. I'm concerned about the remaining sense of discrimination and the fact that people who are vulnerable for the sake of the country think it's okay to sacrifice it, but it seems like you can leave the job of exposing this guy to injustice...)
After that conversation, we had a late lunch and freed the rest of the Beastman slaves.
Around 5 p.m., I removed the collar of the last one.
There are still a dozen of them left, but they're dispatching them far away, and I can tell you that practically all of them are done because they won't arrive until tomorrow morning.
Ray gave a speech before the Beasts.
"I have a favor for you all. That means that we want you to help us move the Holy Kingdom of Lukes in the right direction. Ahead, after returning to the Holy Capital, His Holiness the Holiness and the Executive Bishop of Gastaldi will initiate action to sweep away the corrupt. I'd like you all to help me with that."
To Ray's words, the beasts bow their heads "as they please". While I think this shouldn't be the case when I listen to orders with promise, I continue to speak without expressing my expression that I have no choice now.
"Thank you. Specifically, you will come under the command of His Holiness the Holiness and His Holiness the Executive Bishop of Gastaldi and act in accordance with that order, but I have a favor to ask of you. That means I don't want you two or even your superior orders to fabricate evidence, torture you and force you to testify. Also, if you see any of those behaviors, correct them immediately. You may consider this my order, my strongest order."
A bewildered look appears on the faces of the beasts. Because Ray's orders have no specificity, and it's unclear which case would be misrepresented.
"If you are lost in judgment, please consult Lord Parenti or Lord Fortunato. And I need another favor. That means don't make your life crude. You will also have a mission to do with your life in jeopardy. But don't throw your life away cheaply. I want you all to go back to your normal lives. We also know that we need time to do this, but we will definitely get you back to normal life. So, please. Please take care of your life..."
That's what I said and bowed my head a lot.
The Beasts were more confused than ever. Until then, the superiors only saw themselves as tools, because they themselves took that for granted.
Uno, who watched how it went, fully understood why his countrymen were confused.
(I'll have to pass on Mr. Arklight's thoughts to the key players later...)
The liberation of the beasts was over, but major problems remained. That's how to dispose of the collars of the liberated beasts.
The collar of a slave is a demonic prop that uses dark attributes, but it is a dangerous thing to deprive people of their freedom. Originally the country, or its equivalent, is responsible for reusing and disposing of it, but Ray doesn't trust the human beings of the Holy King.
"I wonder what to do with this collar," Ashley and the others ask, but she doesn't get an immediate answer to what to do either.
Theophilus, who happened to be nearby, was listening to the story.
"Shouldn't we use it on the wrongdoers? Some people are going to be executed all of a sudden, so I think you should use it to detain the suspect, put it on properly in black and white at trial, and then remove it, and make it a criminal slave as it is."
At the end of Theo's gaze was Gastaldi's appearance.
"Right. I'll ask Lord Parenti to do it that way."
And Ray smiles at Theo, "It really helps to have Mr. Theo," he bows his head.
When I told Parenti about it, he promised to join the main unit of the Holy King's Army for now before managing it responsibly.
We will also return to the decree we were putting out on Lark Hill, reporting that the Imperial Army is not moving, and that the army of the people of the meadows is also in Leeva's possession.
"I will now join His Majesty the Holy King. People of the meadows, let's go!
On Ray's order, the people of the meadow, a thousand and five hundred, said, "Ooh!," he responds, running out.
Gastaldi, who doesn't like riding, has to travel by carriage and can't keep up with its speed. But there were two hundred beasts following around the carriage, and safety was assured.
He was thinking about Ray's earlier speech in the carriage.
(Master Arklight told the Beasts not to obey unfair orders, but they wouldn't understand. But if things go wrong later, it's tough. Master Arklight is a clean person. If you hit it bad and it gets in your ear, my path of birth will be completely closed. That's all you must avoid. It's a hassle, but we just have to go with the positive...)
Ray gave a speech with total disregard for Gastaldi, but succeeded in preventing his rampage as a result.
The Rays arrived at the camp of the Holy King's Army ten kilometers away.
Gastaldi, who uses a carriage, is lagging behind, but Parenti, a military bureaucrat, travels by ride because it was a relatively short distance, and manages to do so without delay.
Parenti turned to Augustino, the Holy King, with Ray, minding his aching hips and buttocks. Report to the Holy King that the liberation of the Beastly Slaves is almost over and inform him that in the future the Beastmen will work for the reform of the Holy King's House and the Church.
"It's wonderful," the Holy King praised at will,
"I will hang in the name of God and I will always try to succeed," he declared forcefully.
Ray reassures me that this is no longer a problem for the Holy King's Army.
Away from under the Holy King, he began consultations with Ashley and others about the future.
Ray himself thinks we should go as far as the Holy Capital because he is concerned about the situation in the Holy Kingdom, but he also wants to avoid involving the Hamish. He also cared that the people of the meadows, including the Humans and Horses, could not be brought into the Holy King's Domestic as they were.
"... so I'd like to talk to you about what to do," Ray cuts out, and Hamish starts talking with a flashy look.
"We're gonna hang out till the end. That's why I'm here from Fonce."
"That's right. I hope you don't tell me to go home now that something absolutely more interesting is going to happen with you."
Everyone there laughs bitterly as well as Ray at Alberic's somewhat off-target remarks.
"Okay. Mr. Hamish will be with you till the end."
I say that and gently bow my head, but immediately turn my gaze toward Theo.
"I'm talking about the people of the meadows, what do you think we should do"
"Right. I think it's a difficult issue," he says, slightly silent. And then I slowly looked around at them all and then started talking.
"We cannot take 70,000 troops within the Holy King. So you need to go back to the meadows once. In doing so, they won't be convinced that Mr. Ray is not in command..."
"I knew it......" Ray muttered, but Theo kept talking further.
"... you should think about His Highness Leopold. If you continue to the Holy City, His Highness Leopold will have mistrust of Mr. Ray. If that happens, we might rush our way to move the Imperial Army."
"Right. I completely forgot about Prince Leopold because there was so much going on."
Ray decided to go back to Lark Hill once and talk to Prince Leopold.
Tell the story to the Holy King and other officials of the Holy Kingdom.
"… so the Imperial Army strikes its hand at not attacking the Holy Kingdom. Once you need to return to the meadows, you cannot accompany them"
The Holy King gives his discouraged expression to the word.
"I think you can handle it adequately alone," Ray says, while Parenti explains why on behalf of the Holy King.
"If Master Arklight doesn't go to the Holy City, our country will be in chaos. The authority of the Church has not yet diminished, and I do not believe that those who support the Archbishop will take our actions for granted."
"Can't the beasts solve this by exposing their injustice?"
"In that case, I think a lot of blood will be shed. Though most of the troops and beasts will follow here, there are many soldiers left in the Holy City. Besides, if we take the people hostage, we have little choice."
Ray suffers from what to do.
(I certainly don't know what Mr. Parenty is talking about. But I don't. But I only have one body. It takes more than a month, no matter how fast you rush back to the meadows. If I try to enter the Holy King's kingdom, the Empire may get in the way. Though with Mr. Hamish and the others, it's hard to go back once the Imperial Army is serious......)
With no conclusions, only time passes.
As the night was getting deeper, it was decided to gather the key players for another discussion tomorrow morning.
