“As I said before, I’m from the Kingdom of Berias. I grew up in a small village in that country. Even though it was small, we weren’t poor, and we were happy with our father, mother and many friends.”

Tigre-sensei narrowed his eyes.

“So you got your skills when you were five, right?”

“That’s right. I received [Ignore Weapon Type]. I was able to use swords, bows, and even rocks as “weapons” and know how to use them efficiently. When I was about seven or eight years old, I had no trouble hunting down monsters in the area.”

“It sounds like you’re a Jack-of-all-Trades who specializes in weapons.”

“Oh, you might be right, if you ask me. Then, one day, a big man from the country came to the village. You understand what I’m saying if I go this far, right? He said he needed my help and that I should go to the Capital. I was happy, my power had been recognized. I happily told my childhood friend about it …… but, he was not pleased.”

Then he drops his gaze and there is a pause. Then Verna-sensei asks.

“A childhood friend, huh. Is it a girl or something?”

“…… Yes. She told me that I should stay in the village. But I wanted to test my strength, so I went to the Capital. And you know what, with continued training, there are few adults who can fight me and remain unharmed. The Capital is full of strong people. The pleasure of defeating them was unbelievable.”

He was twelve years old …… about the same age as my brother. I think he must have been really strong even then. He also participated in martial arts tournaments and won, and was one of the best in the country at fighting.

“When I was fifteen years old, the war with the neighboring country started. Of course, I was sent to fight. I thought it would be good for the country if I went to the front and cut down and killed. I thought it would save everyone in the village from being attacked. That’s why I got the nickname “War Demon”. It’s a silly story, right?”

“…… If you’ve done so much for your country, why are you working as a teacher?”

Tigre-sensei laughs to himself. He answered my question by looking up at the sky.

“I guess you’re still a kid. I killed people, and people loved me for it. I didn’t have any education, so all I had was strength, and I lived in that world. I was told that it was war, and I was imprinted with the idea that it was the right thing to do ……”

“……”

“When our country was in a situation where we were sure to win, we stationed ourselves in a small village in another country for an operation. Among the villagers …… are the families of the soldiers we killed.  They attacked us at night. Of course, there was no way the villagers could defeat us, so we …… killed them all.”

Then he choked up and continued to as if he’s squeezing it out.

“There was a girl who stared at us while dying, and she died with a grudge. That’s when my childhood friend’s face came back to me. That’s when I became afraid to fight. They have families too, and I was afraid of what would happen to everyone in the village …… and I ran away from the battlefield.”

When I heard that Tigre-sensei had fled, my eyes widened in surprise. The same was true for Verna-sensei, who was staring at Tigre’s face. I can’t believe someone who can stand up to a dragon would run away ……

“And ……?”

Verna-sensei asks. He let out a breath and told us the ending, which would be hard to tell.

“I returned to the village where I grew up. And tried to live there in peace, as my childhood friend said …… but that didn’t happen. The village where I grew up became prey to the war and disappeared without a trace. The grave that was built by one of the survivors had the name of my childhood friend on it, and that was the first time I regretted it. If I had stayed in the village, none of this would have happened.”

“That is …….”

“I know, I have no way of knowing what the right thing to do was. But that’s what I thought at the time. And I ran away from the Kingdom of Berias, too.”

After that, the war was won, and the neighboring country was absorbed, which is now the Kingdom of Berias. It was a story of history that had not yet made it into the textbooks. It was fortunate that no one was following Tigre-sensei because he was drunk with victory.

“I drifted on, and came to Reflexion. There I thought about how dirty and ignorant I was, how adults use children who don’t know anything. It was a combination of factors, but I knew that such things were common somewhere in the world. So I started to study. I started studying so that I could teach others not to be like me again. After about ten years of living from day to day, I got into the academy at the Capital. Well, I got into a fight with some unsavory noble parents and was picked up by the headmaster. I’m still a bad guy now, you know.”

He laughs, but it’s a fierce life. At the same time, I think I understand why he is so devoted to us. He’s been trying to tell me not to go down the wrong path as he did with Ryuuze.

“The dead childhood friend was a strong-minded person …… She didn’t look anything like her, but when I heard Verna speak up to me, it reminded me of her. It’s not like I’m replacing her or anything!? We were like brother and sister.”

When I hurriedly denied it, Verna-sensei chuckled and placed her hand on Tigre’s hand holding the reins.

“I’m sorry you had to go through that. But if she were still alive, she would say, “You’ve become a great man”.”

“I don’t know. I think she’d be angry ……”

Tigre-sensei, who had tears in his eyes, turned his gaze to me and said.

“Lars, you look like the old me. In the past, when I went to a home visit in Dedite’s home, I saw you training in fighting and I thought you were a real talent. But after what happened with Brao and the damn doctor, I thought you were prone to danger.”

“Prone to danger?”

I asked back, and Tigre-sensei nodded, then put his hand on my head and said.

“You have power, just like me. You can do anything you want by yourself. But if you do it alone, you will always fall into a trap somewhere. Just like I cut down people in the war. Be careful not to be conceited, and be careful not to be deceived.”

He patted me on the head and said that he probably didn’t teach me many things on purpose when I was his age.

“…… Yes, thank you, Tigre-sensei. I’ll keep that in mind”

The experience, knowledge, and wisdom of our ancestors is an irreplaceable asset. I promised Tigre-sensei that I will not let it go to waste.

After the conversation, Tigre-sensei, I, and Verna-sensei laughed, and a voice calls out from the back of the truck.

“…… Uwaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! Tigre-sensei-!”

“So that happened to teacher, huh …… Sniff …… I’m going to do my best to take your class seriously ……”

“I’m …… also afraid of war …… I wonder if that’s what you get when you become a knight. ……”

It was Nora, Jack, and Makina. My brother didn’t say anything, but he shed a tear beside Nora. Speaking of childhood friend, to Me and my brother, it’s Nora. We think I may have overlapped them.

“Oh!? What, so you listening ……”

“I was happy to hear what I wanted to hear, too, you know?”

“Geh, headmaster …… I remember you were on too ……”

“Fufu, I thought you’d be more reluctant to say it, but I was right.”

“Leave me alone …… wait, I’ve already handed in my resignation and I don’t need a salutation.”

“Are you sure? You’re getting married but you’re going to be unemployed?”

When the headmaster says this, Tigre-sensei says back.

“I can earn money by being an adventurer or anything else. You can do anything you want when you’re alive.”

“Ehhh, I want to be a teacher with you? Then, should I quit too?”

When Verna-sensei shows her teasing face, Nora pulls on Tigre-sensei’s sleeve.

“I don’t want to do that!”

“Muuuu ……”

When Tigre-sensei looked troubled, the headmaster showed a letter of resignation from his pocket and smiled.

“Ha-ha-ha …… So, what do you want me to do ……?”

“…… Are you sure you’re alright with me?”

“Because it’s you, I guess.”

When the headmaster throws out his resignation letter, Tigre-sensei laughs, cuts it in half with the dagger in his pocket, and opens his mouth.

“Tch, It can’t be helped! I’ll be in your care again, headmaster!”

” ” “Yay!” ” “

We raised our hands in joy and hugged the teachers from behind.

“Whoa!? You’re gonna mess up my control, give me a break, okay!?”

“Come on, come on, good luck, Tigre♪.”

Verna-sensei held the reins together to keep us from falling.

“Let’s see, It’s a very sad and very warm story. Sarge will have to work hard from now on.”
