26. You’ll Be Sorry for It

Translator: Snowball

As Jiang Zhendong had helped Wang Zicheng win the bid, Qu Wan’s attitude towards him softened a lot and she even agreed to have dinner with him.

After dinner, Jiang Zhendong droved Qu Wan back to her uncle’s apartment. When the car pulled into the alley, he was dumbfounded at the sight of the dilapidated road and buildings. The thought of his other daughter living in a luxurious, comfortable house made him feel guiltier for Qu Wan.

“Wanwan, the neighborhood is going to be demolished. How about… you move back home?”

“Bang!”

Qu Wan slammed the door. “I won’t go back with you. Don’t talk about it anymore!”

She had been in a good mood, but on hearing this, she couldn’t help but flip out in anger.

Jiang Zhendong hurried out of the car and stopped her. “Wanwan, I know I’ve made mistakes. But I’ve been living with regret all these years and I’ve already paid the price. Wanwan, I’m old and I don’t know how much longer I can live. Can you just forgive me?”

“People who make mistakes should pay for what they have done! I’ll never forgive you! Mayor Jiang, you may leave. I hope you’ll never show up before me. I don’t wanna see you again!” With a sneer, Qu Wan turned to leave.

Jiang Zhendong wondered why Qu Wan suddenly lost her temper. “Wanwan, wait a minute!” he strode over and grabbed her by the hand anxiously.

“Let go of her!” Before he could continue, someone roared angrily.

Next, a figure dashed to them, knocked Jiang Zhendong to the ground and shielded Qu Wan behind him.

Taken aback, the driver immediately jumped out of the car and rushed over. “Mayor Jiang, are you alright? Did you get hurt?”

“I’m okay!” When Jiang Zhendong found the one who bumped against him was Wang Zicehng, he waved to the driver, gesturing him to back up.

However, unwilling to let Wang Zicheng go easily, the driver rolled his sleeves up and was about to teach this young man a good lesson.

Wang Zicheng was in low spirits. He had a hard time winning the project, but in the middle of the celebration party, he suddenly found Qu Wan was gone, which made him become listless in an instant.

He learned from his assistant that Qu Wan had left because she wasn’t feeling well.

Without that woman by his side, Wang Zicheng felt lost and he was bored with everything he did. In the end, before the party was over, he drove to Qu Wan’s home.

When he was still some distance from the entrance of the alley, he saw the car of Jiang Zhendong. “What’s he doing here? Is he still hitting on Qu Wan?”

As soon as he got out of his car and ran into the alley, he heard Jiang Zhendong apologizing to Qu Wan.

“This damn old goat must have bullied Qu Wan! Why else would he apologize?”

It was obvious that Qu Wan didn’t want to talk to Jiang Zhendong, but when she turned to leave, that shameless old guy rushed to her and grabbed her by the hand!

Wang Zicheng couldn’t hold back his anger anymore and with a roar, he threw himself onto Jiang Zhendong, like a huge bomb.

Qu Wan was startled as well by his sudden appearance. “What brings you here?”

“If I didn’t come, I would have missed the big show!” Wang Zicheng said coldly. “Mayor Jiang, how could you harass my girlfriend?” he questioned, casting a glance at Jiang Zhendong.

Before Jiang Zhendong could explain, Qu Wan protested, “Who’s your girlfriend?”

“Wanwan, are there any other women here beside you?” Wang Zicheng moved closer to her with a smile. “Wanwan, don’t be afraid of him! If someone dares mess with women, even the governor, I’ll make him sorry for it, not to mention that he’s only a mayor!”

The government now kept a close watch on the illegal and disorderly conduct of officials, so if news of the mayor’s extramarital affairs and harassment of young women went to the press, his career would be ruined, and there was absolutely no way he was going to turn it around!

Wang Zicheng was incapable of confronting those officials head-on, but he could bring them down by stealth. Director Chen was a good example!

Qu Wan was stunned at Wang Zicheng’s words, wondering if he had known about Jiang Zhendong’s past affairs.

“How could he be so well-informed? Has he already known my relationship with Jiang Zhendong?”

When Jiang Zhendong had brought Qin Surong and Jiang Xinyue home, Qu Wan thought that her father only wanted to remarry after her mother’s death and Jiang Xinyue was only his adopted daughter.

However, later, she learned that Jiang Xinyue was Jiang Zhendong’s birth daughter, who was only a few months younger than her! That meant her father had been in a relationship with another woman for years, but her mother was kept in the dark all along.

Disappointed in what Jiang Zhendong had done, Qu Wan broke with him and refused to admit that she had anything to do with Jiang Xinyue and her mother.

She then left Jiang’s house alone and travelled a long way by train for two days to get to her uncle’s house.

Afterward, Jiang Zhendong became the mayor and he was transferred to work and settled down in the city where Qu Jianguo lived.

Only very few people knew that Jiang Zhendong had a daughter besides Jiang Xinyue.

Officials feared nothing more than to be associated with scandals. Once his marital infidelities came to light, Jiang Zhendong would be screwed.

Qu Wan hadn’t recovered from the shock yet, thinking that Wang Zicheng had already known everything about Jiang Zhendong’s past.

On the contrary, Jiang Zhendong had figured out correctly what Wang Zicheng meant. Wang Zicheng must have thought that he was hitting on Qu Wan, so he denounced him for having an affair.

Jiang Zhendong smiled when he saw Wang Zicheng flaring up. “He’d rather offend me to protect Wanwan, so this young man must really like her.”

“The Jiang family is wealthy and potential. And most importantly, Wang Zicheng cares about Wanwan. If Wanwan married him, she would lead a happy life.”

However, Jiang Zhendong had no idea how to explain his relationship with Qu Wan to Wang Zicheng.

Qu Wan had been determined to break off with him years ago, and because of her, Jiang Zhendong’s relationship with Qin Surong and Jiang Xinyue was once on the rocks.

When he was in a dilemma, he learned that his competitors were going to bring him down by taking this opportunity, so he didn’t try to stop her when Qu Wan was about to transfer her household registration to her uncle’s residence booklet.

But it was too late to regret it. Since his daughter had left Jiang’s house, she had been taking him as a stranger.

He once heard rumors that she was out of favor with her mother-in-law and was finally kicked out by her husband. Even so, she was reluctant to come to him, let alone now that she wasn’t so bad off.

When Jiang Zhendong was hesitating how to explain to Wang Zicheng, Qu Wan started urging him to leave. “Leave it to me. And never come to me again!”

After pausing for a few seconds, Jiang Zhendong got into the car and asked the driver to drive him away.

Now the two of them were left alone. “Qu Wan, I can’t believe a seemingly decent woman like you would have fooled around with that old goat! Why are you lying to me?” Wang Zicheng asked angrily.

“That old goat? What am I to cheat you about?” Qu Wan looked at him blankly.
