Where Secrets Lie

Chapter 60:A Trap

The sun was rising before the two women made it back to the manor. Hannah drove them in silence, wanting to comfort Kara, but didn't know how.

"Where the hell have you two been?" Michael raised up from the couch. The dent in the cushion slowly reforming from him sitting there for hours.

His voice booming throughout the place drew in the rest of the housemates. Kara simply walked past them all, her feet dragging mud across the floor.

Michael reached out, "Kar-"

Hannah stepped in front of him, "Wait. Give her some time."

"What the hell is going on, Hannah?" He yelled.

"We sort of dug up Alyssa's grave," Hannah said wincing. This was the moment where she would regret her decision in helping Kara.

"You what?" Logan demanded. His face was red, and he clutched his fist.

She shook her head, with her mouth open, meaning for words to come out. She took a deep breath then looked at him with a sad expression. "She wasn't there. Her body was gone."

Logan left the house in a fury, slamming the door so hard, the wall vibrated briefly. Logan started running. He didn't stop until he reached Alyssa's grave. He couldn't believe what Hannah said. The words resonated throughout his mind but he needed to see it with his own eyes. He skidded into the cemetery but slowed down as he approached. His chest becoming tighter with each step. He peered down into the hole and gazed at the empty, open casket.

"Alyssa!" He collapsed at the foot of her grave. His body hunched over like a broken doll as his tears dropped to the ground. His heart broke all over again.

Michael ran to Kara. She sat on the side of her bed, looking out the window. He took a seat next to her then slipped his arm around her. Kara rested her head on his shoulder, her cries becoming louder. She quickly pulled away and wiped her tears. Her sadness replaced with anger, "I'm gonna kill him." She said raising off the bed, her fist closed so tightly that her knuckles cracked.

Michael stood with her, "And I'll help."

Kara gave a faint smile, "You should get some sleep. I know you've been waiting all night for us to return."

"I'm a vampire. I don't need to sleep. It's more like a frill." He smirked.

"I'm sorry, I−"

"Don't worry about it. Hannah told us everything." Kara nodded as he kissed her on the forehead.

They made their way to the living room. Upon seeing her, Alex stood and walked over to her.

"We will find her," he said as he embraced her.

"We will. Don't let them get to you. Stay strong," Hannah added. "They want you to break down, so don't let them get the satisfaction."

The door nearly flew off the hinge, "I'm gonna kill him!" Logan yelled flying through the front door.

"Get in line," Kara replied.

"Okay. I'm done," announced Michele as she walked in.

Kara muscles tensed, "What are you doing here?"

"Alex called me," she said, calmly taking a seat as if they were all good friends.

"How? He's been asleep for 200 years. He doesn't know you," Kara fired back.

"It's a spell. Our witch, Sara, gave it to us. We didn't always have cellphones you know," said Alex.

"Yes, Sara was my grandmother. The spell was meant for her, but since she's gone, it called me instead. I understand your concern, I helped Elijah, but that doesn't matter. Yes, I serve the Caswell clan, but I serve Alex before I serve Elijah. He is here and so am I," explained Michele. "Anyway, I'm done soundproofing the house."

Amy ran into the room with a huge grin. "I got the Caswell mansion blueprints!" she exclaimed and spread them out over the coffee table.

"Good. Oh, Michele. Can you find someone for us?" asked Hannah as she sat on the couch with Amy.

"You guys are going up against Elijah and the Powell clan. This is like the La Resistance. Of course, I want in," replied Michele.

"We can't be the "La Resistance" if we don't know what we're resisting," Kara said annoyed.

"No. That's a great idea. Michele could help us out a lot," Michael said.

"Fine. I'll get another rollaway bed. She can stay in Amy's room," Kara said with some reluctance.

"Then it's settled," Michele walked over to the blueprint. "Who am I trying to find?"

Kara hesitated before telling her. She still didn't trust Michele completely, but everyone else seemed to. "Alyssa, my sister," she finally said.

"Okay. I need your blood," she said, ignoring the suspicion in Kara's voice and on her face.

"Okay then. Do you have something that belonged to her?" asked Michele.

Kara's heart sank. If she had left the Caswell mansion under normal circumstances, of course, she would have taken something of Alyssa's to remind her of her sister, but the way she was forced out, she didn't have that luxury.

"No, I don't," she said, dropping her shoulders and shaking her head.

A glimmer of hope returned to Kara as Logan spoke up. "I do!" He took off a necklace with a diamond ring on it. "I gave her this ring when she first joined the Caswell clan."

"Perfect!" Michele held the necklace over the blueprints.

Everyone held their breath as the necklace dangled over the blueprints. It swayed for just a moment and then remained motionless.

Logan looked disappointed. "What happened? Why can't you find her?"

"I don't know." Michele's face matched Logan's. "That should have worked."

Kara felt ready to burst into tears. She was so close to finding Alyssa only to fall flat. Suddenly, Amy ran out of the room, only to return moments later with a map of the city.

"Maybe, she's not at the mansion." Amy set the map on the table and opened it.

"Let's try this again." Michele let the ring swayed back and forth over the map. In seconds, it fell to the map like a magnet.

"Newtown? That's an hour away!" Amy exclaimed.

"And a trap," Hannah said as she looked up from her phone. "My servant just texted me. Elijah's coronation is today."
